I bought this book while visiting Jane Austen's house at Chawton, and I'm so happy I did because it's very difficult to find a copy anywhere else! I read a lot about Lyme Regis before visiting, and to this day the beach and town still hold the unique and enticing charm that they did in the 1800s. This book was lovingly researched, and seeks to chronicle any and every connection that the area shares with Jane, deduced from historical records, personal letters, and deductive reasoning. I learned a few tidbits I had never known before, and the entertaining information definitely enriched my memories of my visit.

I read this book as a guide to what to see when my sister and I are in Lyme Regis next week. It is very practical and includes a map of the Austen sites. It explains clearly what is different now and what you can expect and not expect. Lane is also very clear about which local legends about Austen and where she stayed and where scenes in Persuasion took place are true and which are not. A short and useful guide for the would-be Jane Austen walker in Lyme.

A very interesting summary of Jane Austen's involvement with Lyme. I feel that Maggie Lane has, however, made some mistakes in the book with her identifications, some of which are certainly wrong.
