Obscure book recommendations that’s what I look for so I guess it’s my fault why I got this book. Racism, bigotry, misogyny, and child rape so many things I don’t like to read and this book was filled with it. The book did not age well going with the fact that both mc were racist while the FMC used slurs I did not care for. I’d say don’t waste your time in reading the book it’s not good. If that doesn’t change your mind, there’s so much back and forth between the characters as if they’re in high school no real relationship other than their attraction.
Silver Jones has been used and abused by men who have only ever wanted one thing from her. She is determined to never let another man lay a hand on her. Her mother instilled in her that apart from her "flawless beauty" she was worthless so her looks are a huge concern to her. Her only goal in life is to amass enough money so that when her looks are gone she can survive without a man. Cherokee Evans has decided through teachings and limited experience that all white women are whores. He has a partnership in a gold claim with two older men where they live and work together. On a trip into the town of Buckskin Joe he sees a silver beauty who he is determined to have. So we have a abused women who can't stand to have a man touch her and a dingbat who thinks all white women are whores. This relationship should be a walk in the park! (not) Despite Cherokee's determination to have Silver things don't go as planned for him and he goes back to his gold claim. Circumstances end up throwing them together to give them another shot. Things seem like they will work out when the Civil War tears them apart and Cherokee joins the fight. War, smallpox, jail, murders, mobs, fires, and more. Life isn't easy while they are apart. This is one of those books where the romance spans years and I loved it. It was very detailed and interesting. It looks like Georgina Gentry is going to be one of my go to authors!
I've read this book twice now and back in the 90s when I first read it, it is part of what helped my passion for coming to Colorado. I love how the author includes interesting factoids about history at the end of the book!
