“I will serve you my entire life. In exchange, you bring the Kuze family the rank of count or higher.”

The young viscount Akihito agrees to this condition laid out by his butler Katsuragi, who is thus forced into his arms. But no matter how deep their affair goes, Katsuragi’s attitude towards him remains cold. Akihito is plunged into a turmoil of fierce emotions, as frustrated by this unyielding distance as he is driven to violent passion by his butler’s cleverness and beauty. The situation reaches a breaking point when master and servant are invited to a party at the Marquise Moriyama’s.

"I'll do whatever you ask me to. So long as I can be with you. I Will do anything." -- Akihito

Practically GAHHH!! *_* when I read this line... So, as long as Katsuragi agree to remain by his side forever, Akihito will do anything. Be it to gain a title higher than Earl to fulfill Katsuragi's obsession or even marry the woman that chosen by Katsuragi....

"I haven't grown into the man he dreamed of me becoming. He may crave a child to train to be the next family head." -- Akihito

Akihito's expression when he said the line above, was sooo....heartwrenching... T_T Especially when he cried....

"I told you I don't care! I said again and again! I don't care! Whoever you are. Whatever you do. Rank or nobility, they have nothing to do with me. I just want to be with you! I've told you many times!" -- Akihito

"I'm just sick of being tossed around. He'll forget every word he said to me once he gets married. Before long, an heir will be born and he'll no longer remember the promise he made to me. Just like the former master forgot. It never worked out with anyone. I became intimate with some people. But they never lasted long..." -- Katsuragi

Katsuragi's expression when he said the line above in his mind while at the same time reminiscing Akihito's love confession and his sincere care...>_< Oh, finally the cold ice is starting to melt now...

The plot is gripping and the drama feels so real. Some people are complaining that this is too complicated, but that is one reason why this manga is amazing. It's not a light or fun story to read, but if you want a depth plot, then you should read this one.

The art style is great and beautiful too... Not only the anatomy but the facial expressions speak louder than words in this manga.

Ahhh, this is why I love manga better than novel... :D I love novel too, but imo...a graphic without words sometimes can touch deeply or break your heart more than what several lines that you read or the image you imagine in your brain can do... But it doesn't mean that lines without graphic can't touch my heart or what, I've read several good novels that made me cry or moved or depressed etc, but keep in mind that there are only a very few writers can do this to their readers. And of course, vice versa. Not all mangaka can draw like that too... to pour the lines into graphic and perfectly conveying the message in it to readers.

The first time I read this series, I immersed myself. I literally bought Vol. 1 on a whim, from Kobo, and as soon as I read it, I bought every other Volume available and binge-read them, only to discover Vol. 8 - the final book - had yet to be published. I was gutted. The wait was interminable. And then it came...Vol. 8 released...and I was unable to read it. Afraid to end this beautiful journey.

Now I'm re-reading it again, I'm taking the time to review every book, though this won't be the last time I read the series.

For me, Volume 2 is so bittersweet...and beautiful for its simplicity.

Akihito is trying desperately to break through Katsuragi's barriers, and eventually realises that he'll just have to climb them instead. Yet, Katsuragi is slowly losing control - of himself, his feelings, his identity. He's not Kuza, but he's not Katsuragi, either.

Volume 2 is heartbreaking, because Akihito and Katsuragi are at a crossroads, lost in this world of politics and regimental behaviour. Akihito is only 17, but he's so mature when he realises that he has to be the driving force of their relationship, if he's to be with Katsuragi. Katsuragi is 37? and the mature, older figure, but he's also more vulnerable because Akihito's father gave him hope and then dashed it, so he shut off his emotions. He's so unfamiliar with feeling that, emotionally, Akihito is the mature one. Together, they're lost and drowning in a world that won't let them be happy, or together. And, no matter what it takes, Akihito is willing to fight tooth-and-nail to find ANY way for them to remain together...even if it means destroying his dreams, and surrendering to politics and Katsuragi's demands.

Absolutely my favourite panel of this volume is this one, near the end, because it so perfectly sums up the mood of the entire Volume:

I was seriously debating not reading this series after how disappointed I was with the first volume, but as I already own all 8 volumes I stuck with it and I’m glad I did. The story is still pretty confusing since they keep bringing up family names of people you don’t even know yet. The characters are showing more of their traits and I can kind of feel for the forbidden love aspect here. It was really nice to get a lot of the questions we had answered and the characters are being truthful to themselves and realizing feelings. Looking forward to reading more of this series.

Ugh this is such a good BL manga! I just adore the artwork and the storyline! Everything in this manga seemed to fit well into place! My favourite bit in this volume was more-or-less the ending. Such passionate sex! love it!

[ cw//tw: dubious-consent. ]

[ ★★★,3 / 5 ]

This series was not easy to savour. It was not a happy nor a light read. The dramas kept coming one after another and I had a hard time managing them. But still, I like the historical setting ((even though I'm not really familiar with the nobility bits LMAO)), and the 'handsome-men-in-suit' agenda. And there is an actual solid-as-block plot in it ((well ofc, this is hidaka shoko we're talking about)), so it still feels interesting.

Oh btw, Akihito's characterization is still bugging me.

[ tag: age-gap, no-fluff-at-all ((LMAO yes you read it right i'm tagging it no-fluff. real no-fluff.)) ]

As a young boy, Katsuragi believed he was being groomed by Viscount Kuze to be his successor, until the viscount leaves for his other home and Katsuragi learns an heir has been born. Years later, he finds himself in the bed of his new young master and questions what he is doing and what he should do. Akihito hasn’t been to school in a few days and shows no inclination toward going. Meanwhile, Akihito’s friend, Ishizaki, concerned about his health, is buying him some fruit when a chance meeting with Katsuragi’s brother affords him transportation to the Kuze manor.\

Akihito and Katsuragi are in the library. Katsuragi is gauging how far his charge has read. When questioned by Akihito, he admits to having read all the books up until a certain point. When the decision was made to bring Akihito to the mansion, Katsuragi was forbidden the use of the library. Akihito can’t keep his hands off the butler, even in the library, and Katsuragi can do not less than obey. He has promised to stand by Akihito’s side forever, as long as he strives to fulfill the hopes of the Kuze family.

Akihito has received an invitation to a formal event being given by Marquise Moriyama, and he wants Katsuragi to go with him. Katsuragi says that as his butler, that isn’t possible, but Akihito insists that it is – if the invitation is sent to Katsuragi as a representative of the Katsuragi family and not as his butler. When Akihito returns to his room, Katsuragi learns of a visitor – Ishizaki – and receives him, telling him Akihito is unable to receive visitors in his current condition. Katsuragi and Ishizaki get into a serious discussion concerning Akihito, Ishizaki questioning Katsuragi’s intentions, which Akihito overhears.

A member of the Kuze household from many years before has arrived from Yokohama, a previous houseboy. Meanwhile, at the Katsuragi bank, the brothers suspect that their younger brother has been involved in some dealings they may not be in favor of. Perhaps it’s time that they see him.
As Akihito is being fitted for his clothes for the event, he makes an inquiry regarding Katsuragi’s measurements, and requests a suit be made for him as well. Katsuragi doesn’t want to go, but Akihito tells him he procured a personal invitation for him from the Marquise, and that cannot be ignored. He also reminds Katsuragi of his promise to stay with him forever and questions whether Katsuragi is working on Akihito’s future engagement. He promises Katsuragi that he won’t question whatever methods he uses to make it happen.

Akihito returns to school, and has a discussion with Ishizaki, who is concerned about his relationship with Katsuragi. Meanwhile, the former houseboy, Amamiya, has gone to the mansion and reveals why he is there.

The night of the marquise’s event arrives, and Akihito ensures Katsuragi’s presence by taking him with him. Once there, they seem destined to go their separate ways, to Akihito’s chagrin. A jealous Akihito watches Katsuragi’s interactions with the other guests, particularly those he knows the butler has slept with. Katsuragi is trying to make plans for a future fiancé for Akihito, but he is uncustomarily distracted by thoughts of his young master and is surprised by the unexpected appearance of his brother. His brother drops a surprising bombshell regarding Katsuragi’s heritage, but is everyone really surprised? What would Akihito think if he saw them?

The second volume of this series is every bit as good as the first. This is not a typical yaoi romance, assuming it will end up a romance at all, which is anyone’s guess, although I devoutly hope so. There is nothing stereotypical about this story at all, and a great deal to sink your teeth into and enjoy. I’m rooting for Akihito, who unabashedly loves Katsuragi and would do anything for him I believe Katsuragi has feelings for him, despite how tightly he’s wrapped up and the way he holds himself aloof. There are moments when he gives himself away in little ways.

Akihito knows he has to marry, and he’s good with that, as long as it furthers Katsuragi’s plans. I’m wondering how he will manage to keep his relationship with Katsuragi going while he’s married, and how open can they afford to be in front of a wife. Ishizaki already knows Akihito cares too much for his butler and is against their relationship, but will he do anything to jeopardize it, perhaps in the mistaken belief that he needs to rescue his friend from Katsuragi’s grip?

Looking forward to seeing where this goes in the next volume!

Shoko Hidaka's Restoration era (Turn of the Century) story continues in book 2 of Blue Morning.

As book one was very much about Akihito coming to the Kuze mansion and asuming the position of Viscount, book two is an exploration of Katsurgi - the enigmatic butler of the Kuze household. We learn more about his motivations and especially history - with quite a few surprises.

Akihito's friend, Ishizaki, and Katsuragi's family will come more into play as each dance around Edwardian era politics. Yet despite all the maneuverings, the heart of the story of the relationship of the Butler and Viscount remains the heart of the series.

The illustrations continue to be exquisite. Really, the depth of the story and all the multiple layers just add to a very satisfying read. As the story unfolds with each volume, it just gets better and better. I am eagerly looking forward to the translations of the rest of the series.

this was just... where do i start? it's not often you get a yaoi series where all the elements are in perfect balance - the romance, the art, and the actual plot (usually there's too much or too little). it helps that i've just finished reading a book about Meiji/Taisho Tokyo, so i have a fair idea of the social context, but the story makes it clear enough. (i can't find anything in English that gives a date, but the Western clothes in the party scenes put it somewhere around the end of Meiji or beginning of Taisho. it's definitely pre-20s). Hidaka does an impressive job of using the themes of the age to inform her characters - Tomoyuki's rigid adherence to the family code and Akihito's modern individualism - then, towards the end of the volume, starting to turn it on its head, all in the name of plot development. for me, one of the best things about this volume was watching Tomoyuki start to unravel as he realises just what he's unleashed. it's not often in a a dramatic yaoi that we get to see the controlling character this uncertain and shaken.

this is ongoing in Japan, and is currently up to 5 vols. i can't wait to see how it develops.

Now that Akihito is the head and heir of the Kuze Estate, after his parents are tragically killed in an accident, Akihito must assume the responsibilities of his family’s viscount. However, when the family butler, Katsuragi, is woven into the mix, the story becomes a tad more complicated. I did not think that this whole political story would be this enjoyable; the relationship between Akihito and Katsuragi is intriguing. Great volume.

Soap opera drama. Love it. This book covers a lot of Tomoyuki’s past, how came to be in the position he is now, as well as how he was raised by the old viscount.

I'm totally sold, and possibly falling in love with, this series. Blue Morning follows the relationship between 17 year old Lord Akihito, Viscount Kuze, and his 27 year old butler and guardian, Tomoyuki Katsuragi, who was charged with raising Akihito after the old viscount’s death. While volume 1 had the disquieting issues of a minor being in love with an adult to deal with, Katsuragi was able to maintain his stance as responsible adult until the nearly mature viscount forced himself on Katsuragi - his “social inferior.” Volume 2 starts with Katsuragi having struck a deal with Akihito - essentially, as long as young Lord Akihito does everything he can to advance the Kuze family status, Katsuragi will submit to Akhito’s advances.

Admittedly, still a fraught relationship and storyline. Katsuragi, master manipulator in the name of Akhito’s father, will do anything to keep his word to the deceased viscount and see Akhito’s position elevated in the world. Volume 2 had multiple storyline threads, from the plotting and alliances of noble families to the capitalist scheming of Japan’s new merchant class, all wrapped in a Downton Abbey-esque panoramic narrative.

Akihito’s Academy friend Ishizaki plays a greater role in this book, and a new character - the mysterious former Kuze butler, apparently away on a years long journey - shows up. In this mix, the even more mysterious origins of Katsuragi start to play a greater role, too, seemingly triggering repercussions with interpersonal, economic, and social consequences.

The art is glorious and perfectly suited to the story. It's the equivalent of a lavish BBC historical production, with sumptuous interiors, detailed and moody exteriors, and period dress to die for. The compositions are equally gorgeous, with underlying geometric and abstract motifs structuring every two page layout and supported with textures and tones that reinforce the design while intensifying mood and emotion - all while deepening the sense of place and time.

And don't get me started on the pacing of the visual narrative! The sequencing of the panels from one to another, with the various close-ups, zoom-outs, intense gazes, and the rhythmic ways that motion and action are conveyed, sometimes lasting for multiple pages, is astonishing. Hidaka cuts from one scene to another and back, never loosing focus or momentum, sweeping me away as the story took on a life if it's own. What an amazing artist and graphic storyteller.

I have book 3, and I'm so confident about this series that I've purchased #’s 4, 5, and 6.

What Kuze aims to do is going to result not only in a change in his personal relationships but also a change in the peerage system and the whole class system he lives in.
This time period is an extremely transitional one with an entire class of extremely stubborn individuals. These Japanese people dress and act like westerners, but continue to uphold the philosophy and code of the samurai. Everyone seems to be kept at such a distance in this society, it’s difficult to get close to anyone, even those in your own home.

Blood runs both hot and cold between Kuze and Katsuragi as they begin having an affair, with a stipulation. “I will serve you my entire life. In exchange, you bring the Kuze family the rank of count or higher.”
The individuals in this story are so unhealthy and so unhealthy to each other that it almost makes me sick. But the art is so pretty.

the intrigue and drama keep building up!! i enjoyed this a bit more than the first, which is always a good sign for a second volume in a series! there were a number of times i went "NOOOOOO STOPPPPP there's already enough to deal with as it is!!!!!!" when new drama would begin to arise but honestly? i loved every bit of it 💖

the artwork is consistent, katsuragi is still beautiful as ever, THE PLOT IS SO GOOD, oh and akihito is still a lil brat (though, i won't deny he's shown development). dare i say this series is becoming a favourite? 👀👀👀

2.5! The details behind Katsuragi’s lineage and past are still a mystery, so I’m curious to see how it all plays out. The story itself can be a bit confusing and somewhat repetitive (many points were reiterated again and again). Still not a big fan of Akihito; his actions are rather…hm brusque? I hope to see a lot more development from him. However, I do like how he’s adamant abt class rank and status not being a big deal. Regarding the “romance”, I’m still not feeling it. Aki’s affectionate words towards Katsuragi would have much more impact on me if his feelings were presented better.

I liked how Akihito and Tomoyuki’s relationship progressed and changed in this volume. The younger top x older bottom dynamic in this manga is top tier, and I can see the angst building up further as both characters are forced to comply with their duties. Although Akihito is admittedly much more reluctant to be follow the norms of noble society and just wants to be with the man he loves instead of getting married and producing an heir for the Kuze family.

Tapi, masih belum mau mengakui. Ih, geregetan. Geregetan. Frustrasi gue ngeliatin mereka berdua.
