I am now running out of what else to say about this series.

One morning though, I got a copy of one of our broadsheets here in the Philippines, The Philippine Daily Inquirer and saw that this comic strip is serialized there. I knew that all along but since I have not been buying newspapers anymore (I used to buy dailies before but since most news are in the internet; why bother?), it was my first time to see a strip of this KikoMachine Komix side-by-side with other popular comic strips. Maybe I am not a real comic strips fan or maybe that one particular strip was not really funny, I had a different feeling seeing KikoMachine characters on the same page with those of the characters by not only local but also foreign cartoon illustrators. Abrera can of course compete with world-class talents but I grew up looking at those other cartoon characters when I was a child like Popeye, Blondie, Mutt and Jeff, etc. Those characters were there and I ended up reliving my childhood days by remembering that those were parts of my crazy comics days.

Nothing really new in this Book 6 except some new characters like Venn Man whose loneliness and despair are disquieting and at the same time thought-provoking. I also noticed here the character that did not register in my psyche in the previous book, Goody Pakyutsie who as his name hints at, is somebody who is "too good to be true." I still like Bertong Badtrip especially because he is small, there is no space for his face to really change in the last frame where Abrera normally exaggerates the face of his character to elicit laughter from his readers. There is also a character like Mariang Kokak but I think she is so ugly and her only talent is to jump like a frog. I hope Abrera will not use that character anymore.

I always appreciate the thought-provoking strips with one of the characters uttering a popular saying then Abrera puts a twist to it. For example, there is the phrase that I use nowadays to my daughter who is currently adjusting to her college life. The saying is this: "If there's a will, there's a way." But Abrera's character responds to this saying something like there's a new one and it goes like this: "There's a will, where's the way?"

My favorite one is when one character quotes Hellen Keller with this: "No pessimist ever discovered the secret of the stars or sailed to an uncharted land or open a new heaven to the human spirit." Then silence. He added: "How pessimistic." The other blurted: "Ano bah? Ba't mo parating pinakukumplika ang buhay?" (Translation: What the eff? Why are you always complicating life?) If you could only see how angry that other guy is, you will be laughing out loud.

I think that's what makes Abrera tick for me. Those quotes prove that he is an artist with brain. Pa-deep kunwari but I think he is really deep.

I said in my opening that I was running out of what to say but still I managed to write a long review. Sorry for contradicting myself but when my brain starts grinding, my fingers keep on punching the keys. Of course, there will always be something to say about a good book like this.

"Hate Satan ever more, LOVE GOD even Better." WINNER!!

This volume may not be as funny as hell (but still very funny!) when compared with other Kikomachine Komix volumes, the interior art of book six is the most detailed one to date (Kikomachine is now at volume 12). Manix Abrera's already crazy huge creative mind has expanded even more, with his concepts and panel studies even (feeling intellectual, ooh!) more diverse and metaphysical. I mean, Venn Man and Ugatang Puso? That's epic gold mehn.

I’ve read all the Kikomachine collections, and as expected this one also caters to the humor of the UP Diliman crowd (including me) and/or teenage boys (I have two brothers, and I speak like them sometimes, so yeah, including me). Unfortunately, unlike the other collections, Manix’s latest takes longer to get to the funny as storylines are sidetracked by existential ruminations that are actually better fit for the silence of 12. And we must admit that some of the jokes are getting old. But it’s still laudable for the create-your-own-adventure series near the end, which I enjoyed a lot.

As usual, masarap basá-basáhin.

There's the way, where's the will?

May kwentung pag-ibig (Yay!), may kwentung pagkaka-ibigan (BFF!), may gore (yuck!), may katatakutan (Really? Ows? Multo ka ba talaga?), may adbentyur (Yahoo!), at iba’t-iba pang kawerdo at kakornehan (Ur soh baduy! Ewws!).

I have noticed Visprint published books with very nice covers (most of books I bought) but so happened to add them to my list of “The book that should be judged by its cover”. The truth is I am attracted to eye-catchy covers. It trigger your imagination and you wonder how nice the story you will soon to read. My first impression on this book is a mistake, I bought this because I like the cover and I want to read Pinoy book as well. Pagbukas ko ng libro, ay! Comics! Putek! I read some manga because of anime and I haven’t read any Pinoy comics (maybe during my childhood Pinoy comics have been declining its popularity or I am not just interested in it).

I think the author is a fan of Metal (and I like listening to this genre during High School so I can relate on the part that it was mentioned though it’s not the main idea), you can see it with how the characters’ look and their expressions. Reading this is a nostalgic of my high school life, how funny and simple, what tattooed in your mind is not the lectures your @#@$@ teachers been blurted out every day but the happy memories you had with your barkada or classmates. I laughed on some pages and frowned on corny part sometimes, on the last few pages, it reminds me of playing an otome game haha!

I would definitely buy another kikomachinekomiks. It’s worth it.

Kalokohan

Its like ummm.... Haha.

Pa-Deep talaga, Pero nakakatawa talaga.

Hardcore talaga tong Kiko. Haha. Sulit pa yung pag-bili kasi lahing may extra kang makukuha na pedeng gawing bookmark.

Favorite ko talaga yung 1 chapter a day sa bookstore, nakaka-tempt na subukan. Hahaha.

Wirdo nung choose your own adventure. Haha.

Literal. Demonyo! Hahahaha.

Wuuuhhoouu!

Letse.

Without goodreads, perhaps I wouldn't be able to know the Tagalog translation of the Alibata characters used for its title on cover.

Inside jokes, stahp!

Now, this good friend of mine (who let me borrow Sorrowful, Sorrowful Mysteries!) let me keep his very copy of the Venn Man at iba pang Kalupitan ng Kapalaran, another comic compilation of Manix Abrera. A side thought though, even if I didn't take UPCAT, I can relate to the common University of the Philippines student's POV through Kikomachine Komix. Oh, that intricate illustration of isaw, let me have that!

Asteeg talaga si Sir Manix :)) Ang paborito kong linya dito ay yung "Hate Satan Even more, Love God even better!" sa pp. 42.

(Yehes, feeler!) at and MBS! Ang cool! I can relate. Haha chos!

Di ko lang gets masyado yung Venn Man. Ang complicated. : |

Yung tipong choose what happens next. In fairness. Napagod ako magpalipat-lipat ng pages. Hahahaha!

Not bad to, as usual!

Existentialist. Deep humor. But I think the first few compilations are funnier/better than this. This one's more mature and serious.
