Mimi Kirk has some amazing raw recipes! I absolutely love her and her books are amazing. This one has smoothies, juices and other raw recipes including salads. It contains many color photos of the recipes as well.
What I love about Mimi's books is that they contain tons of fully usable recipes that are easy and I continue to make time and time again. Not to mention, many are kid friendly raw recipes. Her almond milk is a staple in our home. Do yourself a favor and try her chocolate milkshake. It tastes just like chocolate pudding.
I would highly recommend for anyone who wants to eat raw and even for those who just want to supplement with health recipes.
I'm surprised this hasn't been reviewed here because it has 5 stars and 50 reviews on Amazon. I got the free rental for my Kindle and was enjoying it so much, I had to buy the glossy copy. Nice photos etc. Raw food really is beautiful, if you think about it. The colors are so vibrant and luscious. The author, Mimi Kirk, did a fabulous job getting me to want to eat more raw food. I never really considered it before. It seemed boring before. No, I don't think I want to make bread out of cashews, but I do want to have a green smoothie every morning, and I want to make her amazing house salad A LOT. My teenager, who never takes salad but who was eating this for the fourth time, asked, "So are we eating this *every* day?"
She gives many tips for healthy living. My favorite: "When you give your body the vitamins and nutrients it needs, desire for unhealthy and addictive foods drop away naturally." She probably wasn't talking about my Costco brand Premium Performance Multi horse pills.
I loved the introduction, but I was not impressed by the recipes. I tried a handful and most were not great. This was the first book that made me realize that just because it's a published recipe doesn't mean it will taste great. Even though raw foods may have more micronutrients than cooked foods, incorporating additional lightly cooked fruits & veggies into my diet is more attainable for me personally.
I liked the story and the first half of the book. I didn't care for the recipes. I don't own a dehydrator, nor am I considering purchasing one. Many recipes are very time intensive. I like the idea of eating raw and will try to lean more in that direction, but I'm not ready to embrace everything the author has introduced.
This gorgeous book with so much helpful advice is a real keeper for me! I borrowed this book from the library but fell in love with it and have already ordered my own copy. In fact, I ordered a copy of each of Mimi's books!
There is advice for health and beauty including tips on how to stay young; which all made perfect sense. My mouth watered at all the beautiful recipes and the author made them all seem so doable. A dehydrator, powerful blender, spiralizer, juicer, and food processor are of great help to follow this way of eating; even though there are recipes that don't require this equipment. If you are suffering from health issues and want to avoid conventional medicine, this book is a real inspiration. If certainly doesn't hurt to try this way of life for a while to see if you feel better.
The first several chapters are about embracing the natural lifestyle. For those who have been avoiding chemicals, pesticides, and the like for awhile these chapters will only be review. The actual cookbook begins with a list of (very expensive) equipment you will need to make a raw diet work. I find this both frustrating and ridiculous. Our ancestors lived raw without $500 blenders. So can you. The recipes themselves are varied and delicious. Even my skeptic husband couldn't deny that Ms. Kirk knows what she's talking about when it comes to gourmet raw food. People always gasp when they find out how old Ms. Kirk is, but forget that while she looks amazing she has only been raw for a short time (5ish years according to her intro in this book). Yes, healthy living can prevent aging. She obviously also has incredibly forgiving genes too though.
I really wanted to like this book. I do eat mostly plant-based foods and have a healthy lifestyle so I thought this book would be perfect for me. As a disclaimer, I must say that I didn't actually make any of the recipes so I can't commment on their taste, however, browsing through the book I really couldn't find any recipes that appealed to me. I don't currently have a dehydrator so that eliminated a lot right from the start, but the overwhelming trait to all of her recipes is the amount of time they would take to prepare! I do enjoy good, healthy food but I just don't have enough time to make most of these recipes - not when there are many other healthy recipes out there that take much less time. But for those with the proper kitchen equipment, a big budget and true desire to eat raw... then this book looks like it would have some great recipes for you:)
Lots of information from the author's point of view of what has worked for her in her raw food journey. The recipes are varied and fantastic and I can't wait to tackle all of these! Other than the dehydrated recipes, these can be incorporated in any meal with a 100% raw or cooked diet. She covers everything from juices and smoothies to salads, breads, cheeses, sides and main dishes. Oh, and how can I forget! Desserts!
A great resource for anyone who likes variety in their diet or someone who is interested in going raw.
There is also a detox section with recipes to help you move through the transition to a raw diet if that is your choice.
I'm a big fan of Mimi ! She is an inspiration and I very much like her outlook on life. As for the recipes, I like many of them but do not use a dehydrator oven as I don't want to use electricity for hours just to make my food. I like most of my stuff raw anyway, so no need to heat or bake to make it taste like the 'real' thing (pizza crust etc).
I got this book from the library, but I am going to buy it because I really enjoyed it that much. Her recipes were great, but this is also a good 'loaner' book to give to friends to explain the benefits of raw (this edition specifically for women).
The first book that got me interested in health and nutrition. She has some killer recipes in the back and this lady is in her 70's!! If you want to see someone who looks good because of the good decisions she has made about health she is your lady!
