Cancelled: The Left Way Back from Woke

Right now, someone, somewhere is being cancelled. Off-the-cuff tweets or "harmless" office banter have the potential to wreck lives. The Left condemns the Right and the bigotry of the old elites. The Right complains about brain-dead political correctness. In reality, both sides are colluding in a reactionary politics that is as self-defeating as it is divisive. Can the Left escape this extremism and stay true to the progressive ideals it once professed? In this provocative book, Umut Özkýrýmlý reveals how the Left has been sucked into a spiral of toxic hatred and outrage-mongering, retreating from the democratic ideals of freedom and pluralism that it purports to represent. Exploring the similarities between right-wing populism and radical identity politics, he sets out an alternative vision. It is only by focusing on our common humanity and working across differences that the Left will find a constructive and consensual way back from "woke".

1970 yılında Ankara'da doğdu. Orta ve lise öğrenimini Saint Joseph Fransız Lisesi'nde yaptı.
1994 yılında Boğaziçi Üniversitesi Siyaset Bilimi ve Uluslararası İlişkiler Bölümü'nden mezun olan Özkırımlı, yüksek lisans eğitimini The London School of Economics and Political Science'da, doktora eğitiminiyse İstanbul Üniversitesi Sosyal Bilimler Enstitüsü Uluslararası İlişkiler Bölümü'nde tamamladı. 2005 yılında Doçentlik derecesini alan Özkırımlı halen İstanbul Bilgi Üniversitesi Uluslararası İlişkiler Bölümü'nde öğretim üyesi, The London School of Economics, Avrupa Enstitüsü ile Lund Üniversitesi Ortadoğu Araştırmaları Merkezi ve Malmö Üniversitesi Küresel Siyasi Çalışmalar Bölümü'nde misafir araştırmacı olarak görev yapmaktadır. Özkırımlı, Harry Tzimitras ile birlikte İstanbul Bilgi Üniversitesi Avrupa Birliği Enstitüsü bünyesindeki Türk-Yunan Çalışmaları Programı'nın Direktörlüğünü de yürütmektedir. Özkırımlı'nın daha önce yayımlanan çalışmaları arasında Theories of Nationalism (Milliyetçilik Kuramları, 2000) ve Contemporary Debates on Nationalism (Milliyetçilik Üzerine Güncel Tartışmalar, 2005) adlı kitaplar ile Nationalism and its Futures (Milliyetçilik ve Geleceği, 2003) adlı derleme bulunmaktadır. Palgrave Macmillan Yayınevi tarafından İngilizce olarak yayımlanan bu kitaplardan Theories of Nationalism, halen 25'i aşkın ülkede, 70'i aşkın milliyetçilik dersinde 'temel okuma' olarak kullanılmaktadır.

Türkiye'de ilk olarak 1999 yılında Milliyetçilik Kuramları: Eleştirel Bir Bakış adıyla yayımlanan, 2. ve 3. baskıları ise Doğu Batı Yayınları tarafından yapılan kitap, Sideris Yayınları tarafından Yunancaya, İran Milli Çalışmalar Enstitüsü tarafından da Farsçaya çevrilmiştir. Özkırımlı'nın Spyros A. Sofos'la birlikte yazdığı Hurst & Co. Yayınevi ve Columbia University Press tarafından 2008 yılı başında yayımlanan kitabı Tormented by History: Nationalism in Greece and Turkey (Yunanistan ve Türkiye'de Milliyetçilik) de Το βάσανο της Ιστορίας: Ο εθνικισμός στην Ελλάδα και στην Τουρκία adıyla Kastaniotis Yayınevi tarafından Yunancaya çevrilmiştir. Özkırımlı son olarak Theories of Nationalism (Milliyetçilik Kuramları) adlı kitabının genişletilmiş ikinci baskısı ile The Troubled Triangle: Nationalism in Cyprus, Greece and Turkey (Belalı Üçgen: Kıbrıs, Yunanistan ve Türkiye'de Milliyetçilik; Ayhan Aktar ve Niyazi Kızılyürek ile birlikte) başlıklı bir derlemeyi yayına hazırlamıştır. Her iki kitap da 2009 yılı başında Palgrave Macmillan tarafından yayımlanmıştır.

I can't figure out why this book hasn't received more notice; it's by far the best left-wing anti-woke book. It's the most persuasive discussion of escaping the trap of woke identitarianism. He approaches the problem from epistemological and ethical perspectives and is inarguably from a leftist standpoint. The last chapter is a banger, in which the author plots a way out of postmodern particularism in favor of a more sophisticated--and inspiring--universalism.

It's obvious that slicing the world into ever-smaller identity groups and insisting on moral purity w/r/t those groups is a losing political strategy. Özkırımlı has constructed a perspective that is both sensitive to the particularities of the experiences of those groups without reifying those differences. By arguing for a universalism that takes those differences into account while still emphasizing universal values and structural criticism, he allows for a way of transcending "colorblind" liberalism and "colorbound" (and sex-bound, and gender-bound, etc) Woke politics. We instinctively know that particularism lacks the motivating ideas needed for social change. The author has provided a framework that answers the challenges of both the woke and the liberals. What's even better? It denudes the reactionary right of their power by distinguishing the anti-woke left and the insincere right-wing criticisms of woke ideology.
