ksiazka to sraka i jebie starym chujem

*Prior expectations*

Prisoners with Dilemmas is a volume in the RBA–National Geographic collection Our Mathematical World, first published in Spanish in 2012 and later translated into several languages, including English and Portuguese. The collection consists of 60 relatively short volumes (around 150 pages each), each devoted to a specific theme and combining mathematical theory with historical context and biographical sketches of famous mathematicians. The level is accessible, requiring little more than curiosity and roughly a high-school background in mathematics.

This particular volume focuses on games in general and Game Theory in particular. The author, Jordi Deulofeu, has also contributed to another series I own (Mathematical Geniuses), where he wrote volumes on Fibonacci (which I’ve read) and Pascal (which I hope to read next year).

I’ve found the books I’ve read so far in Our Mathematical World enjoyable and, for the most part, accessible. That said, given their format and aims, none has struck me as especially memorable. My expectations for this book were therefore fairly standard—around three stars: pleasant, informative, and breezy—perhaps dampened slightly by the fact that Game Theory is a relatively recent and highly applied branch of mathematics, and one I tend to find less appealing than others.

*Posteriors*

The book largely met those expectations and perhaps exceeded them slightly. If I were to assign a precise rating, it would probably land at around 3.5 stars. The mathematics is clearly explained and generally easy to follow, provided one pays some attention. This was helped by the fact that it is the third Game Theory book I’ve read, after The Strategy of Conflict and Introducing Game Theory: A Graphic Guide.

The book is divided into five chapters. Chapter 1 offers a general introduction to games and their relationship with mathematics up to the twentieth century. Chapter 2 explores strategy games—those without an element of chance—and shows how winning strategies can be identified, with examples drawn mainly from the Nim family of games. Chapter 3 turns to games of chance and introduces some probability, using well-known anecdotes such as the Chevalier de Méré problem, the Monty Hall problem, and the notion of expected value. Finally, chapters 4 and 5 deal with Game Theory proper, introducing its core concepts: zero-sum and non-zero-sum games, pure and mixed strategies, equilibria, saddle points, the Prisoner’s Dilemma, Nash equilibrium, Shapley values, and so on.

Overall, the book is solid throughout, but the last two chapters are the most engaging. This seems to be a common reaction: some reviewers complain that they expected the entire book to focus on Game Theory and felt disappointed. The title arguably encourages that expectation, but I found the earlier chapters enjoyable in their own right. Even when not strictly “Game Theory,” they provide useful context and make the final sections more satisfying.

Ciekawostka:
Alquerque to najstarsza znana gra bez elementu losowego, poprzedniczka warcabów, została opisana w 1283 r. w ”Księdze gier” króla Alfonsa X Mądrego.

Termina apresarado.
