When a lion and a jaguar shifter fall in love, the fur flies.
After having two boys of his own, Kevin, a werelion, is ready to find his mate. Searching on a shifter online dating service he finds Payce the werejaguar of his dreams. When someone tries to hurt the man who would be his mate, Kevin shows his new lover what he's willing to do to keep the supernatural mate of his dreams.
Amber Kell has made a career out of daydreaming. It has been a lifelong habit she practices diligently as shown by her complete lack of focus on anything not related to her fantasy world building.
When she told her husband what she wanted to do with her life he told her to go have fun.
During those seconds she isn't writing she remembers she has children who humor her with games of 'what if' and let her drag them to foreign lands to gather inspiration. Her youngest confided in her that he wants to write because he longs for a website and an author name—two things apparently necessary to be a proper writer.
Despite her husband's insistence she doesn't drink enough to be a true literary genius she continues to spin stories of people falling happily in love and staying that way.
She is thwarted during the day by a traffic jam of cats on the stairway and a puppy who insists on walks, but she bravely perseveres..
I usually consider Amber Kell to be popcorn reading. It’s not necessarily well written but the sex scenes are hot and the situations interesting enough for the short story. There are always editing problems but this has gotten better over time. Unfortunately this new shifter series is so rushed there is nothing tangible to the stories. The second book has a couple of sex scenes, a psycho human that hates shifter, a new insta-romance/love, and even pride dynamics thrown in. There is so much that nothing is given any credibility or weight and the entire story is pretty silly.
The plot leaps from one issue to the next without much resolution or point. The story starts with Kevin, a werelion that signs up on an online dating site to find his mate. After looking at a handful of pictures he finds his one true love/mate and is off to meet Payce. They instantly fall in love, have sex immediately and are mates for life. The next day Payce heads off to work and someone tries to kill him so Kevin whisks Payce away to his mansion. Pride dynamics ensue, the killer tries again, and the group even goes to find a missing coyote.
The plot is linear after a fashion but has so many holes and leaps there is nothing really cohesive offered. There’s no need to add all of those various and dispirate elements into the short story (only 60 pages) and so each one suffers. There are no real resolutions or satisfying reasons to any of the actions and the story just skips from one problem to the next without worrying about developing or resolving an issue first before moving on.
This is especially relevant when Payce and Kevin get together. They have sex and are immediately deeply in love and mated. When Payce mentions he’s not immediately, instantly ready to call Kevin’s mansion his home, Kevin whines about how lost and hurt he is and wants to go off to lick his wounds. Considering these two met maybe 5 minutes ago, there is absolutely no depth to their relationship, no development, no real tangible feeling of romance and emotion.
There is no characterization to support the characters but what will stand out for fans is the light, easy, and mostly entertaining read. This is not a story you’ll remember or ever read again but it takes all of a few minutes to read, the characters are cute, the sex is hot and once the short interlude is over you’ll forget it entirely. For an empty, easy read this one is ok. It's about average for Kell's backlist, though she's definitely done better books. Just don’t expect much.
Once again, the blurb describes the story. Kevin has two sons with female Tia, but knows his mate is a man. Scrolling through the shifter dating website, he sees Payce and knows he’s it. Within a couple of days they are together and making like monkeys, um, cat-shifters. Payce is a jaguar, who sometimes has trouble holding his human form when he gets upset, but Kevin is instantly smitten, and they are perfectly matched in the bedroom with Kevin being more dominant. Within 90 min, Kevin has put his claiming bite on Payce, who is a bit more reluctant given that jaguars are not pack animals, and he’s not sure what this all means, except that he knows Kevin is his mate.
When someone tries to kill Payce, Kevin whisks him off to the compound where a series of innocuous comments by Payce cause Kevin to jump to conclusions. “I don’t know about kids” turns into “You don’t love me and my kids, fine, but I’m not leaving them”. Whoa, buddy, slow down. Up until the bitter end, Kevin finds ways to pout about nearly everything Payce says.
There is a big show-down with the bad guys out to get Payce and every shifter in existence. Of course both the lions and wolves from the previous book come to rescue one of their own (or two I suppose), but it’s pretty anti-climatic and the whole reasoning for the hatred of shifters (a shifter stole my mommy away from me, and daddy beat me) seemed a bit one-dimensional and cartoonish.
The sex was hot and all of the familiar tropes are there, and besides Kevin jumping to conclusions every five minutes, he was lovable and friendly and the kids were cute. I didn’t care for it as much as the first, it just seemed too easy and too fast, see picture, claiming bite within the day, attack by bad guys, solved within 6 hours. The end. My head was spinning. I will however likely read book three coming next week with the bear shifter town sheriff and a human. When I want something fast and light they seem to fit the bill.
--- I barely remember a Kevin in the first book...I think he was the one warned Adrian or something like that? So he's leaving his two children to find his mate. PREFERABLY MALE, because he's jealous of what Talan and Adrian have. Ok. Good to see our guys being happy btw. Also him and Tia, the mother of his cubs doesn't really have a love connection. They're just friends. Lmao! Happy to see Adrian adored by the females in the Pride because of his baking. Giving them chocolate treats. Nice that Adrian is breaking the Pride's stereotypes. Hmm, he's gonna try online dating. It'd be a miracle if he find his mate there haha. Pretty nice that Adrian's fully settled in. His computer office being lived in along with all the collections from games he worked on. Oh shit! He found the guy! Okay...That was fast. --- Ah! So second MC is Jagwire shifter named Payce. WHAT THE FUCK?! He's just casually being assaulted at work. His foreman just hitting him with a 2by4 plank?! Good to know he wants to share his life with the right guy. He's 25. WHAT THE HELL?! SO HIS SHITTY EX, FRED, BROUGHT HIM OVER TO HIS FRIENDS TO OFFER PAYCE UP TO THEM?! And Fred punched him because he refused. WHAT IN THE ACTUAL FUCK!!! Understandable that your jaguar came out then...Should have killed all of them... Poor guy. It's so nice to know that his life's about to change for the better with the inevitable meeting with Kevin...probably. Phew! He almost deleted Kevin's email. Haha, Tia must have written Kevin's bio. JESUS! Kevin already imagining the calluses on Payce's hands...chill out! I love how much Payce loves Kevin's southern drawl.
Haha Kevin's so fucking honest. He wants to get down and dirty ASAP. But Payce wants to go know him first before jumping to bed with him. Considering how his ex treated him this makes sense. Really nice that Kevin assured Payce to not be pressured by him into doing anything he's not ready for. They're going to have a little lunch date on Sunday at Seattle. Sounds wonderful! --- 15 pages in. I like Kevin's cowboy boots. It's been with him for so long and gone through a lot that it makes him feel safe and reassured. I really like that he went outside the Pride to Payce's rundown apartment. Lmao he's so determined to make Payce go live with him up the mountains with his Pride. Nice that Kevin likes Payce's body, he was expcecting someone small and delicate, turns it Payce is hardened due to construction work. Lvoethat Kevin finds this beautiful. OH FUCK!!! THEY’RE ALREADY GOING AT IT! and by the front door too. I like that Kevin asked Payce to kiss him so that Payce is in control. Interesting that Kevin knew that Payce was his mate from the picture on the dating site while Payce didn't get that instinctual revelation. It really must be a lion thing , same thing happened with Talan. Lmao, I still remember Talan caressing and talking to Adrian's picture, that was funny af. Understandable that Payce doesn't want to be mated just yet. LMFAOOO! Payce saying to wait and Talan just gets childishly sad. Haha hilarous how Payce invited him to sit at is couch woh him and Kevin's like THAT'S MORE LIKE IT! hahaha. HOLYFUCKINGSHIT!!! KEVIN'S JUST TOO FUCKING HORNY THAT IT'S HILAROUS! Payce wants to have a serious conversation and Kevin's immediately on his lap wanting to "fuck like horny cats, move him up to his Pride adn love happily ever after" lmfaooo! AND HE MEANS EVERYTHING HE SAYS! Okay they're gonna try and see if they're bodies and minds are compatible. GODDAMN, I fucking love how his jaguar is loving so much being dominated by Kevin. Kevin's setting up rules for their relationship. All reasonable, except for the fucking 40 times a day. Nadda. Love how Payce is figuring out Kevin is while they're doing this. Discovering how much of big happy goofy lion Kevin is despite the big and handsome exterior. I like how Payce is feeling so loved and wanted by Kevin. OKAY!!! THAT WAS GOOD. Kevin is now mated with Payce, Payce just needs to do the same with him to fully complete the mating. --- 28 pages in. Hmmm, understandable that Payce is uncomfortable with Kevin already having kids. Plus being a Jagwire doesn't help. Maybe he needs to meet Kevin's kids, Quinn and Chase, and get to know them might override the shitty instinct of his jaguar to not be attached to kids.
Not good that Kevin wants to appear as this bad boy to Payce. Not wanting Payce to know he's a philanthropist sponsoring this Lion Heart charity organization with his inheritance money and hiding how he spends his everyday life just sleeping under the sun and just playing with his kids. Haha pretty sure that Payce will love this.
OH WOW! Payce determined to meet Kevin's kids, actually be a good father to them and wants so much to be a part of Kevin's happy family. Unlike what he grew up with.
Lmao that was quick. TELL THIS TO KEVIN!
WOAH, I love that Payce is passionate about mosaic tile work. He's ever interested in his job when he needs to do mosaics. Maybe he can specialize doing mosaics as a living when he's up there living with the Pride.
So cute how his coyote shifter friend, Dennis is so happy that Payce found his mate.
Oooh…so Payce thinks that Kevin's an asshole for being all good and dandy with him not being part of his kid's lives. Yikes…
WHATTHEFUCK?!!! PAYCE'S CAR EXPLODING!? Is someone trying kill him?!
Awww, adorable how Kevin takes care of Payce. And Payce liking so much being taken care of and this new feeling starting in him because none of his past boyfriends took care of him.
AH! So his shitty foreman hitting him in the head with a plank might be people actually trying to kill him. It's not just the foreman being an asshole…why would anyone try to kill him though? LIKE PUTTING A FUCKING BOMB ON HIS CAR?! IT SEEMS SO BIG DEAL FOR JUST PAYCE, A CONSTRUCTION WORKER, like he's a nobody not some rich or famous guy. Hmm…
Hmm…I'm betting that it's Payce's asshole ex boyfriend that wants to kill him.
--- 41 pages in.
Good that they're going up the mountains to Kevin's home. Would be extra protected with the Pride there.
Wow! Payce meeting Kevin's kids went well and naturally. Cute that Chase let Payce, basically a stranger to him carry him and they're already talking so well together. Quinn approves, seeing how strong Payce is carrying chase.
JESUS CHRIST CALM DOWN PAYCE!!! Wanting to kill Tia so that Kevin may never return to the mother of his children.
Good that Kevin assured him that he doesn't love Tia but they love both their kids.
Real nice to hear that Adrian goes back to his pack on full moons.
Good that Payce is dead set on not living off on Kevin's money. As I said, he needs to set up a service as a tile work specializing in mosaic. Set up a social media page featuring his tile and mosaic works and put up flyers around town for his services. So that he can be on call and earn his own money and at the same time be satisfied with his work.
Okay! they're now fully mated with Payce biting Kevin while they're at it.
---
50 pages in.
Awww so cute that the kids brought them breakfast in bed made by Tia.
AAWWWWMYGOD!!! SO adorable how chase carefully and slowly walked to Payce's side of the bed to kiss him on the cheek. Saying “welcome dadymate” Cutest shit ever.
Understandable that Quinn’s a bit distant.
FUCK! We should have saw them eating that breakfast together. ---
Love this calm morning with Adrian and Payce in the kitchen. Adrian stressbaking while questioning Payce about who's after him. Talan’s back! Nice.
It's still so funny how Kevin's hiding what he does. Good that Payce told Kevin that he would like to do mosaic tile work for a living. And that Kevin would help him setup business.
WHATTHEFUCK?! Payce is gonna go back to his shitty apartment because it was ransacked! WHY?!!! Kevin needs to calm down about Payce returning to his because he hasn't made a decision yet if he'll live with him up here.
As Payce said, THEY JUST MET. --- Ah so this attacker is also a shifter. We really didn't get to know if that asshole ex of his was also a shifter. Just that Payce shifted in front of them.
Payce reassuring Kevin that he still wants him for a mate and that he just wants to discuss what he's going to do with his life while being mated with him for life. Haha Kevin still so sad about all this. YOUR GUY NEEDS TIME TO ADJUST HIS LIFE. THIS IS LIFE CHANGING SHIT FOR PAYCE, SO FUCKING BACK OFF.
Pretty neat that there's a shared human and shifter school in town. Makes both kind get used to each other.
Oh, so Kevin was kicked out of his Pride by his mom at 18. Immediate cut off of his Pride and mom's love…so fucked up. Hmm, this is why Kevin's so quick to be upset by Payce indecision.
I like that Kevin made Talan promise that his kids wouldn't be kicked out of the Pride and can leave, venture out on their own whenever they want and ready…as long as they don't challenge Talan for alpha. That's good.
AHHSHIT! THESE SHITHEADS HAVE HIS FRIEND DENNIS THE COYOTE SHIFTER.
OHMY! Who the hell did Kevin called for backup?! I don't think it's the rest of the Pride because it's too far away.
Of course his shitty foreman would be here.
PAW, People Against Werekin. His foreman's mother left them when he was a child because a were tiger claimed her as his mate. Then his dad abused him because of this.
Understandable why he became like this.
OHSHIT!!! THE PRIDE AND ADRIAN'S PACK IS HERE. GOOD! Real quick work on these fools. Hopefully PAW won't be able to rise up again.
Understandable why Dennis sold out Payce, with her sister being held hostage elsewhere.
--- Pretty nice that Dennis is working with Adrian and the rest of the pack to find his sister.
Good that he's finally talking to Tia. Hmm, Payce is finally able to tolerate Tia’s scent because he knows that he's Kevin's now. GOOD.
Ohwow! Adrian already found out where Dennis' sister is. Weird shit going on between Tia and Dennis…
WOAH!!! Pretty cool that Payce is gonna do mosaic work for Lion's Heart on homes for homeless cubs. Make the place more colorful and friendly. Sounds lovely. Funny how Kevin talked to his vice president for permission to do this project.
--- Ok book.
Wish we had at least one scene of Payce doing his mosaic art tile work.
Worried about PAW. Not gonna be the last we see of these fuckers, with Dennis’ sister still hostage.

Book 2 is another light and easy read but I personally didn’t like Kevin as much as Talan.
Kevin has cubs by one of the females in the pride but knows she is not his mate. He is certain his mate will be a man and seeing Talan and Adrian together has made him more anxious to find him.
It’s another picture perfect moment when he finds his mate on a dating site! Payce is a Jaguar and the whole mating, pride, family and children thing freaks him out but also strangely calls to him. The fact that someone seems out to kill him means he arrives at the pride house more quickly than he expected.
It’s insta-love again, but I kind of like that with shifters, Kevin’s kids are adorable and when Payce tries to eat their mother in the kitchen it adds hilarity.
This series is perfect if you are looking for a light read with a bunch of Lions that will make you smile.
After the hilarity of book one in this series, with an alpha lion mating a rather scary werewolf and all the interspecies issues that followed, I was looking forward to this second story. It’s about the second male lion in Talan’s pride, Kevin, and the man he finds via Werekind Wanted, an online dating site for shifters. Kevin’s mate turns out to be a jaguar, and with two feisty catshifters trying to make a mating work, and knowing that would not be easy, I was rubbing my hands in glee before I even started reading.
This is Kevin's (werelion) and Payce's (werejaguar) story. Kevin finds Payce through an online dating service. Kevin has two sons with a female werelion but is looking for his mate. He finds him when he finds Payce.
The premise was ... interesting. I would have liked to see the tension between Payce and the mother of Kevin's children more fully developed and explored.
Bottom line: too short (especially for the price).
2.5 stars While the idea of finding your mate through website is nice the rest of the story is just so-so for me. It's like reading the story, fast-forward way, because everything happens just so quick it has no room for actual romancing *shrugs*
Yep, this lion pride is a hoot! Kevin was hot and his little boys were the cutest, while Payce was adorable. I'm really enjoying this series as it is fun and sexy and definitely keeps my interest for a short story. Looking forward to the next one.
A father of two, Kevin decides the time has come to find his fated mate. Knowing he will need to look further away, he turns to a supernatural dating website. Looking through the listing, he sees werejaguar, Payce. He knows he has found his mate. Now, after one date, he is sure. He just has to convince Payce. When Payce is attacked, Kevin pulls out all the stops to keep him safe.
Prideful Mate is in essence a story of prejudice. Kevin finding his mate and knowing it is him made some humorous reading. Payce struggles with his jaguar form and touch our heart. He is understandably leery, but when danger strikes, Kevin is there. Hot sex, some danger, a touch of humor and MM paranormal love, A Prideful Mate has all that and more.

I liked Kevin the best, he was so laid back and just went with the flow until the accent dropped and he was all business. I also really liked the relationship he had with Tia and the boys.
Payce was harder to get to know as he was a bit standoffish but I liked that he was a bit more realistic. He wanted to get to know Kevin before the whole moving in and combined lives.
This was a short, but very fun read. It had mystery with a bit of danger and lots of hot passion. I enjoyed this book along with the humor and author's style of writing.
Kevin has known that he would have a male mate but shortly after meeting his Jaguar mate they find themselves with some teething troubles in the form of an anti shifter group
This is the second book to this series. And I really enjoyed reading this one as well. Its about how one lion in the pride has two children by a lioness but they aren't mates. Each wanted children Tai the lioness because she didn't want to wit for her mate to have children and Kevin because he knew his mate was male. Tai helps Kevin go on a website called Werekin Wanted. Its were all kinds of werekin can come and find a mate that is there true mate. As they look on the site. They make fun of some and comment on others till she passes a picture on a male. Kevin has her go back til he see the picture again. There he see a picture of Payce a jaguar shifter and he know that is his true mate. Payce works at a construction site. He love to work on mosica tile cause he can make all sorts of pictures come to life. But he will work on other tile work or on any time of construction. He has one friend called Dennis, who is a coyote shifter. Payce looks through his email from the werekin wonted site and find Kevin's email to him. He writes back to him and then received a message about coming to where kevin lives but tells him he can't cause he has to work but gives his number to Kevin to call him. When Kevin dose call him. Kevin tells him he can come down there and they can get to know him. When he gets there they start to get to knoe one anther. That's when Payce finds out that they are mates. An finds out that Kevin already knew that they are mates just by looking at his picture. Then all sorts of things happen. The PAW, People Against Werekin, Goes after Payce and all werekin cause they believe that all werekin so die. An that his best friend Dennis is helping them cause they have his sister. When that happens Kevin calls in his alpha mates Adrian who calls in his pack and pride cause the PAW has Kevin and Payce. They tell Payce over a phone called that the more the merrier for all werekin to come here and get Dennis. That when the wolves circle the coyote. But in the end they help the coyote find his sister. But then Dennis gets grabbed by Tai to be taught about loyalty and my be something else.
The start to a Prideful Mate jumps right in where From Pack to Pride leaves off. The story again focuses on the lion pride living up in the mountains, and the lack of available mates for those living there. This problem was solved by the creation of the 'Werekin Wanted' dating service website, a rather fun and novel way for Amber to introduce a mate.
Kevin is a lion yearning for his better half. Content with his life so far, Kevin is a happy go lucky soul living a life of ease. He has two children with Tia, one of the lionesses within the same pride, and unlike other cat species, loves his children and has stayed around to assist with raising them. Kevin is a all-rounded, likeable character who gets along with everyone. This, among other things, helped endear him to me, because at times I felt he was a little presumptuous in his thinking. Identifying his mate by picture alone, Kevin sets off to make his mark.
Payce is a black werejaguar working in construction. After tons of suggestive and unsuitable responses to his ad on Werekin Wanted, an answer from Kevin makes his afternoon. Not looking for anything but a good time, Payce realises when they meet that Kevin is his mate. Payce felt like more of a complex, confused character to me, feeling unsure of himself and where he fit into the whole scheme of things. He also battles feelings of inferiority based on his lack of control over his jaguar.
The plot moves quickly, aided by the knowledge that someone is trying to kill Payce. Issues also arise from Kevin's complicated relationship with Tia. Both of these helped in creating that extra feeling of tension I could get my teeth into. Most of the characters from the first story in this series are re-introduced, with a couple of them helping keep tensions down with their individual touches of humour. You could read these stories on their own, but I really feel they are better read in sequence. Written in a contemporary style, this is a shifter / paranormal novella with a touch of drama and mystery to it. Nxx
When can three equal a suitable two? When people learn to compromise and stop to listen. Ah, but that’s not always so easy...especially when there’s a lion and a jaguar involved.
Amber Kell’s book, A Prideful Mate is a complicated and intricate read. There’s a lot going on in just a few pages, but it’s interesting to see how Ms. Kell makes it all work. Although this is a short read, I felt immersed in the story and needed to know what would happen next. I liked the twists and turns as well. Just when I thought things would go one way, Ms. Kell zagged. I didn’t know what would happen next, but I sure held on to find out.
Now I did say this story was complicated. It is, but it’s a good thing. Kevin’s tired of being alone. He wants his mate, not just someone to warm the bed. I can’t say I blame him. What I had a hard time buying into was his role. At times, he comes across very alpha. At other times, he’s very beta. I liked the fluctuations, but I wanted a little more insight into why he switched so much. I still rooted for him to have things work out. He’s a cutie. And then there’s Payce. He’s rather an enigma. He’s got lots of baggage, but the brooding part of him works well. He’s the one I’d like to see stroll through my living room—in cat or man form. I would’ve liked to have seen more communication between the characters, but really, that’s what works for the story. I could relate to the silence and the complications.
The antagonist is nicely nasty and totally not what I’d pictured. My one issue with the story? I wanted it longer. I wanted to know what would happen next. There’s lots of subplot going on and it would be really cool to see where things go with the secondary and primary characters.
If you want a story that’s sticky sweet and super hot, you need to read A Prideful Mate. 3.5 cherries.
Amber Kell is my hot cocoa read so I don't expect high levels angst or too much plot considering the stories are usually short. However I do expect lots of details, in-depth characters, humor, and solid character connection. While the plot was fast that was as I said before expected. The characters were still in-depth as ever. However the details that I always expect weren't there. I know that Kevin is tall and blond and gold. I know that his mate is his height with more muscles, dark hair, and brown eyes. That’s where the visual ended though. I fully expect that I'll have to use some imagination while reading but the author normally gives a more solid starting point than this. The character connection was there but why? Why do they balance each other? Despite all that though it still gave me the warm and fuzzes and if I didn't know the author and have expectations it would have been a four star.
Amber Kell gives us wonderful descriptions of the characters; they come to life on the page and I enjoy the opportunity to get to know them. As well, the 65 pages of the story flew by and there was nothing left unsaid. I can also see possibilities arising from this story for future tales; I’m definitely hoping that there are many more in this, Kell’s Supernatural Mates, series. I do love hot, sexy shifters falling in love, and the romances are magic! Read the rest of the review here: http://www.blackravensreviews.com/?p=...
*sigh* I give this a 2.5 really, but rounded up to a 3. There was a premise for a great story here, but I found it fell a little flat. While I'm a HUGE fan of the insta-mate concept, I felt that the bond between the two heroes was severely lacking. I never really felt connected to either. There was so much packed into the 60 pg short story that I felt there really wasn't any time for them to get that bond formed.
The angst and danger were not drawn out and are overcome with relative ease. This wasn’t really long enough to draw out the problems. We learned more on the different cat cultures and a long term nemesis P.A.W.S. (cracks me up). I did enjoy this quick read and I am still interested in reading more of the series.
The story is easy and even if main couple, Kevin and Payce, mate fast in this book I didn't really mind it, at all. The writing style is comical and mature, but then if we consider that this Author manly writers that type of books the plot really should be developed more. But why bother if you can sell a book with easy, half developed same type of plots.
While I didn't like this book as much as book 1 it was still pretty good. Kevin and Payce are great characters. I thought there was just too much going on to be crammed into such a short story. I liked that Kevin had 2 little boys and Payce was so worried about how he'd feel about them, but it was all for nothing as they got along just fine.
Easy, Breezy, nothing too angsty, if your in the mood for a read but don't have the time/energy to invest in a an epic saga exporing the emotional equivialnt of the Mariana trench it's quick fun read, especially if your like me and are a fan of Amber Kell and/or read the first in the series.
A fun and "fluffy" read. This was a short read so doesn't have the detail of longer books. Like most of Amber Kell's books the story was on the light side with an uncomplicated plot line. So fun when you need a light and fun read:)
I really enjoyed this one. It was a bit longer than the others by Kell that I've read so far and it was humorous as well. I'd love to see more in this Supernatural Mates series as well as longer stories.
