Business books on strategy, habits, and success seem to be a dime a dozen. But finding something that details so many workplace culture issues while providing concrete ways of dealing with them is incredibly rare. And that is why I love Happy at Work.

Robyn Garrett is a workplace leadership and culture expert on TikTok, making fun and insightful content that looks at foibles and serious issues in a light and approachable way that manages to always teach a lesson. That approach translates well into this book. Starting with an introduction that looks at 'how we got here', the book dives into your leadership, team and organization - there is truly something here for every issue.

One of the best things for me is the systematic approach to breaking down problems and building up solutions. Each issue starts with a goal, harmful habit and successful strategy. Then it looks at what's gone wrong to put our businesses in this place, an approach to dealing with that, and finally actions to take to achieve the initial goal. There are tables that break down more complex situations in a nuanced way.

As I read I kept bookmarking things that resonated with me - but when I looked back I realized I'd bookmarked over half the items! That is because while there are a hundred issues explored, they are all common things anyone who has been a leader at any level with have encountered in businesses of any size.

One little detail I loved in the digital version I was glad also appeared in the physical copy was having each tip start on a new page. Seems small, but with the consistent formatting of having things line up in a way that lets you jump to the start of a new tip, everything flows more easily.

My wife has already taken my paperback copy to explore after I kept sharing quotes as I read, and people at work are looking forward to checking the book out.

As I was flipping through sections I was reminded of Atomic Habits because it felt simultaneously like everything was common sense and yet I learned a ton. Garrett discusses safety and it seems obvious until you think of how few companies truly embrace safety culture over simple compliance - and how much that matters.

Happy at Work: How to Create a Happy, Engaging Workplace for Today's (and Tomorrow's!) Workforce by Robyn L. Garrett is a nonfiction book to help those looking to update their workplace culture. One of the most important reasons people today choose to stay—or leave—a job is the culture of the company. As people become more socially conscious; focus more on wellness, self-care, and work-life balance; and seek jobs where they feel a real connection, it’s more important than ever to think about the elements of a job between the work itself. But how do you create a culture that people enjoy while staying productive and successful? This book not only provides great ideas for changing your workplace for the better, but also provides clear guidance on how to make those changes happen. Whether you’re a new manager, a long-time HR representative, or another leader ready to make a change, Happy at Work gives you everything you need to know to revitalize your workplace and make you (and your employees) happy to come to work every single day.

Happy at Work is definitely aimed at managers and leasers, and how they and the corporate attitudes impact the day to day lives of their staff and how happy they are at their jobs. I do think the advise is good, and things that leaders at all levels can get something from and move forward with. Many of the bigger changes would need to happen on a company wide level, not just in a single office or department- but many of the changes can be implemented fairly easily with a little bit of effort and willingness to change. So many of the suggestions boil down to treating staff like people rather than commodities, numbers, cogs, or problems that need to be dealt with. However, capitalism and much of the current corporate climate works hard to do the very opposite that this might be a tough change for some to move towards or implement. I thought the author did a great job of breaking everything down and giving solid why's, wherefores, and data to support the information in the book. I thought it was well researched and written, and was not as dry of a read as many leadership or management books out there.

I have read numerous books and articles on mental well-being at work, and I was excited to obtain a preview copy of Robyn L. Garrett’s Happy at Work. It was an engaging read full of practical tips for managers and leaders to build stronger, happier workplaces. Although Garrett clearly states at the beginning this book is written for a corporate audience, the tools she offers applies across many types of workplaces in the United States and beyond.

The structure of the book lends itself well to all experience levels. The practical tips throughout are designed to help managers recognize there’s no “one size fits all” approach to creating mentally healthy workplaces. While I could give praise to almost every section of the book, I’ll call attention to both the sections on recognition and rewards & support mental health — Garrett covered these nuanced, layered topics with excellent insights and tips that even existing happy workplaces could use to improve.

My only critique is I wish it was longer! Some of the activities/tips were so substantive they could be their own book. Garrett provides just enough information for each activity/tip that leaves you wanting to know more.

I’ve long admired Robyn’s leadership lessons she’s shared on TikTok and the book expands her measured, thoughtful approach. Highly recommend this book to any managers, leaders, board members, or any individual looking to grow your leadership and management skills.

Happy at Work is refreshingly focused on the personal side of leadership to help leaders build a happy, healthy, successful team. The book is broken into 100 topics such as Actually Recognize Accomplishments and Take Harassment and Bully Complaints Seriously. While some topics are geared toward front line leaders and some toward upper level management, they are all worth reading.
My only criticisms for this book are that each section's "what's gone wrong" often assumes problems result from the bad intentions of companies and the "here's what to do" can be light on details on how to do things.

Happy at Work is a call to action for managers to stop talking about improving workplace culture and actually doing something about it.
Robyn Garrett who is a speaker, CEO and Tiktok influencer gives you 100 actionable steps to improving your workplace culture. She focuses on the corporate arena but I work in education/nonprofit world and many of the ideas would be easy to implement in our workplace culture.
It's a quick and easy read that you will bookmark in many places to go back and see what you can do to make your workplace better.

Great concepts, all. Some actionable suggestions, some mindset shifts. Effort to be applicable to different sized companies and different levels of leaders. Will continue to revisit, I'm sure.
