After spending nearly five decades studying near-death experiences, Dr. Raymond Moody finally has the answer to humanity’s most pressing What happens when we die?
In Proof of Life After Life , Moody and coauthor Paul Perry reveal that consciousness survives after the death of the body. Featuring in-depth case studies, the latest research, and eye-opening interviews with experts, Proof explores everything from common paranormal signs to shared-death experiences, and much more.
Raymond Moody, M.D., Ph.D. is the bestselling author of eleven books which have sold over 20 million copies. His seminal work, Life After Life, has completely changed the way we view death and dying and has sold over 13 million copies worldwide. His latest book is GLIMPSES OF ETERNITY: Sharing a Loved One's Passage from this Life to the Next.
Dr. Moody is the leading authority on the "near-death experience"--a phrase he coined in the late seventies. He is best known for his ground-breaking work on the near-death experience and what happens when we die. The New York Times calls Dr. Moody "the father of the near-death experience."
Dr. Moody has enlightened and entertained audiences all over the world for over three decades. He lectures on such topics as: Near Death Experiences, Death With Dignity, Life After Loss, Surviving Grief & Finding Hope, Reunions: Visionary Encounters With Departed Loved Ones, The Healing Power of Humor, The Loss of Children, The Logic of Nonsense, and Catastrophic Tragedies & Events causing collective grief response.
In addition to his writing and lecturing, he is in the private practice of philosophical counseling and consulting on dying. Dr. Moody also trains hospice workers, clergy, psychologists, nurses, doctors, and other medical professionals on matters of grief recovery and dying. He helps people to identify systems of support and to cope with their anxiety, grief, and loss through better understanding of mourning and bereavement.
Dr. Moody received his medical degree from the College of Georgia and his Ph.D. in philosophy from the University of Virginia where he also received his M.A. and B.A.
He is the recipient of many awards including the World Humanitarian Award and a bronze medal in the Human Relations category at the New York Film Festival for the movie version of Life After Life.
Dr. Moody is a frequent media guest and has appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show three times, as well as on hundreds of other local and nationally syndicated programs such as MSNBC: Grief Recovery, Today, ABC's Turning Point, and hundreds more.
My father, who was not a doctor but who was a prolific reader and endowed with great curiousity, gave me Dr. Moody’s first book, Life After Life, back in 1980. He told me I should know about this stuff since I was a doctor. I did not read the book until 2005, when I had to cope with the death of a child and realized that my beloved science was of no use in figuring out what I could believe about what I could not know. Over the years since that time I have come to realize that there is an enormous amount of what we do not and cannot know about subjects like consciousness, despite all the assuredness with which scientists make pronouncements. In this book, Dr. Moody raises the subject of terminal lucidity which is a phenomenon known to many doctors and the people who care for the dying. It is one of those subjects that cannot be explained by the current belief system about the brain and consciousness that forms the approved scientific narrative. Dr. Moody and the other physicians involved studying these phenomena are on a new frontier - but one that has been close to half a century in the making.
The first book I read by Raymond A. Moody Jr. was Life after Life. I came across it after my grandmother died. I missed her so much, and at the time, I was looking for answers. The book was a huge comfort to me.
When I saw this book on Netgalley, I hoped that my request to read and review it would be approved. I am thrilled that it was. This book sets out to prove that there is life after death. The author has gathered together an astonishing number of first person accounts and even cases where more than one person has been a part of the what happens when someone dies.
I gave it five stars because I feel that Raymond Moody has accomplished his goal of writing a well-rounded book filled with proof of the afterlife.
Another awesome book by Dr Moody! Shared death experiences is a new term to me but not a new or surprising phenomenon. The information on the Psychomanteum was wild and gave me goosebumps-in the best, most positive way! This book is filled with so many incredible, life affirming stories! If you have any interest at all in the afterlife do yourself a favor and read this book. You’ll be ever so glad you did. Oh and it does have instructions on how to make your own psychomanteum. You’ll find that after the discussion questions.
“Proof of Life after Life” tries to answer the following questions. What happens when we die? Is there a soul that survives the death of the body? Is there an afterlife where we can reunite with our loved ones? These are some of the most profound and universal questions that humans have ever asked. In this groundbreaking book, Dr. Raymond Moody, the leading authority on near-death experiences and the author of the seminal “Life After Life”, and Paul Perry, a New York Times bestselling author and documentary filmmaker, provide compelling evidence that consciousness survives after the death of the body.
The book is based on nearly fifty years of afterlife and near-death experience research, as well as the latest scientific and philosophical insights. The authors present seven reasons to believe that there is an afterlife, each supported by in-depth case studies, eye-opening interviews with experts, and fascinating anecdotes. The seven reasons are:
- Near-death experiences: Millions of people have reported having a transcendent experience of leaving their body, encountering a being of light, reviewing their life, and feeling unconditional love during a close brush with death. - Shared-death experiences: Some people who are not near death have witnessed the dying process of a loved one and co-lived their near-death experience, seeing what they see and feeling what they feel. - Deathbed visions: Many dying people have reported seeing deceased relatives or friends, angels, or religious figures who come to comfort them and escort them to the other side. - After-death communications: Some people have received messages from their departed loved ones through dreams, visions, signs, synchronicities, or mediums. - Paranormal phenomena: Some people have experienced poltergeist activity, apparitions, or other unexplained phenomena that suggest the presence of a discarnate intelligence. - Reincarnation memories: Some children have recalled details of their past lives that have been verified by independent sources, indicating that they have lived before in another body. - Cross-cultural beliefs: Most cultures and religions throughout history have believed in some form of life after death, reflecting a universal human intuition.
The book is narrated by Phil Thron, who has a clear and engaging voice. The authors explain complex concepts in simple and accessible language, using examples and analogies that make the book easy to follow. The authors also address some of the common objections and criticisms that skeptics may raise against the evidence for the afterlife, such as hallucinations, wishful thinking, fraud, or cultural influences. They show that these alternative explanations are not sufficient to account for the consistency, veracity, and transformative effects of the afterlife experiences.
The book is not only informative but also inspiring and comforting. It offers hope and healing to those who are grieving the loss of a loved one or facing their own mortality. It also invites readers to reflect on their own life purpose and values, and to live more fully and authentically in the present moment. The book is a powerful reminder that death is not the end but a new beginning.
“Proof of Life after Life” is a must-read for anyone who is curious about the ultimate mystery of existence. It is a captivating and convincing book that will challenge your worldview and expand your horizons. It is a book that will make you think, feel, and wonder.
MOODY REMOVES HIS CAVEATS AND QUALIFICATIONS, AND NOW CLAIMS ‘PROOF’
Raymond A. Moody, Jr. (born 1944) is both a philosopher and psychiatrist. He has written many other books, such as: 'Life After Life,' 'Reflections on Life After Life,' 'The Light Beyond,' 'Coming Back,' 'Reunions: Visionary Encounters With Departed Loved Ones,' ‘The Last Laugh,’ etc.
Coauthor Paul Perry write in his Preface to this 2023 book, “It was 1987 when my literary agent… asked me to coauthor a book with Dr. Raymond Moody...While [co-]writing ‘The Light Beyond,’ I learned the basics of what makes up an NDE… I was hooked. I decided to … devote myself to creating a library of wisdom dedicated to Raymond and his expertise in the field of NDEs. To a great extent, that library has now been accomplished… What astounds me … is the profound change Raymond has made in his own belief of an afterlife. When we first began… he shunned the idea that near-death experiences are proof of an afterlife. His reasoning for skepticism was clear: NDEs are subjective experiences … to present proof of such a bold belief… the event itself would have to be witnessed by at least one other person…. This type of witness is called a shared death experience (SDE), which… is when a living person somehow participates in the events of a dying person… Raymond feels … it is no longer necessary to prove an afterlife---rather, disbelievers should have to prove there isn’t an afterlife.” (Pg. xi-xiii)
Moody wrote in the Introduction, “I am not a doubter of NDEs. After all, I named and defined the near-death experience in 1975… Still… I realized that my work still did not answer the question… What happens when we die?… it’s the subjective nature of the experience that would keep it from standing up… as proof positive of an afterlife… I derived fourteen common traits that summarized… the NDE… The work I did in writing ‘Life After Life’ opened the door to a large amount of medical and philosophical research … However, many who read this book … believed I … had finally proven life after death. That most certainly wasn’t the case… these common traits … lack one thing---objectivity.” (Pg. xv-xx)
He reports, “19 years after beginning to think about SDEs… my whole adult family had one. Our mother, at the age of 74, received a diagnosis of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma… and she had less than two weeks to live… There were six of us---siblings and in-laws… we all moved to the hospital to make sure she wouldn’t be alone… Mom had been comatose for the last two days, but now she awoke… she said with a weak voice, ‘I love you all very much.’ … it became obvious that the end was minutes away. We all held hands in a circle… the room suddenly changed shape---for all of us… Four… of us felt as though we were being lifted off the ground,,, ‘Look,’ said my sister… ‘Dad’s here! He’s come back to get her!’ Several of us saw him… we saw him as solid as though he were standing in front of us… These mystical events … caused sadness to leave the room and be replaced with great joy… [During] the next few days… we all compared notes and concluded that we had traveled at least partway to heaven.. [and] had shared a number of her death experiences on the way.” (Pg.. xxiii-xxv)
He continues, “In addition to my personal SDE story, I’ve nearly died twice in my life… But belief is not enough to convince others…. So, how can I prove there is an afterlife while being mindful of ... other people’s emotions and beliefs?… by telling real people’s stories… categorizing them into clear reasons, which each add weight to the conclusion… So, [this book] … presents the new arena of death studies… the collection of more objective information.. is the goal of studying SDEs. In this book, you’ll find a wide variety of stories … I consider these my ‘greatest hits’… the stories… get to support my proof that consciousness survives bodily death.” (Pg. xxv-xxvii)
He explains in the first chapter, “It is the subjective nature of NDEs that make them circumstantial evidence and therefore do not provide proof beyond reasonable doubt… SDEs, however, do provide proof beyond reasonable doubt that the soul survives bodily death. By definition they are experiences in which one or more persons share in a dying person’s transition…. Following are the seven types of SDEs that in my estimation yield proof of an afterlife… #1: Out-of-Body Experiences; #2: Precognitive Experiences [‘when a healthy person experiences the apparition of a loved one who is … dying’]; #3: The Transforming Light; #4: Terminal Lucidity [‘a flash of lucidity and vigor that takes place shortly before death’; later, he calls it ‘paradoxical lucidity’]; #5: Spontaneous Muses, Healings, and Skills; #6: Light, Mist, and Music; #7: The Psychomanteum [‘mirror gazing’].” (Pg. 4-15)
He reports (and generally endorses) the researches of some others: cardiologist Michael Sabom, psychiatric social worker Sarah Kreutziger; Kenneth Ring [Ph.D.], MD Bruce Greyson, and John Audette, who “would eventually join forces to create the International Association of Near-Death Studies (IANDS), “an organization aimed at studying the near-death experience.” (Pg. 24-25)
He notes, “It can be deeply frustrating to try to convince some people that there is evidence of the afterlife without those people having witnessed that experience themselves. I know this personally. Early in my research … I was one of the doubters… But then when I had one of these paranormal experiences---a precognitive experience, to be exact---I stepped into the ranks of the true believers and have never looked back.” (Pg.. 43)
He states, “[those in] the materialism school believe everything is physical… They tend to reject things and events they can’t re-create or measure… Dualists believe that the mind and the body are separate, meaning that the mind can often exist independent of the brain, possibly even communicating from a distance… I would cast my vote with the dualists. I accept that much of the world we live in is unexplained… although we may not be able to see or weigh them, we know that they exist beyond the perception of known measurement. I think that under extreme situations… the mind can separate from the body where it is free to go to other places during near-death experiences.” (Pg. 55-56)
He acknowledges, “I will willingly admit that I have no idea how precognitive experiences can take place, only that they do, and with enough frequency that they can be considered significant contributors to the proof of life after life because of confirmable communication after death.” (Pg. 61)
He explains his use of the Psychomanteum: “A technique related to the afterlife that was common knowledge around the world for thousands of years until about 100 years ago has vanished almost entirely. This technique involves using a mirror to ease the conscious mind into a vivid apparition, or a reunion… with a departed loved one. People gaze into a reflective surface … usually a mirror these days because of its convenience---in a darkened room anticipating that their deceased relatives or friends will appear in the reflection.” (Pg. 149)
He continues, “I began to think of this practice of meeting with the dead through a reflective surface as the Middle Realm… a liminal space between this world and the afterlife where the living and the dead may meet. I found this notion to be very exciting for a number of reasons. First and foremost was that mirror gazing could be a very effective means of grief therapy for patients who were unable to overcome the depression and grief caused by the death of a loved one.” (Pg. 152)
He also acknowledges, “I have never declared that these events are ‘real.’ I’ve never said that the dead return. But I have quoted the people who have these experiences… who say that their visionary apparitions are truly a loved one who has shown up to provide grief support. I admit freely that I have no idea of what takes place in the mirror or what it is that some say comes out of the mirror. Is it a figment of the mind? A vivid dream? A different reality tapped into by a simple process used successfully down through history? I just don’t know. I do know that most of those who go through mirror-gazing sessions have great belief in what has taken place.” (Pg. 168)
He also reports about atheist and materialist philosopher A.J. Ayer (1910-1989), who (to his great surprise) “had a near-death experience in the late 1970s. I heard directly from him what a big impact that had made on his life (transformation) when we were both… guests on a late-night BBC Radio program… Ayer and I met in the green room before the broadcast… I asked whether he thought his near-death experience might have been a delirium. And he responded immediately, emphatically, that it definitely was not… telling me that he sensed that his experience was purposely meant and structured specifically for him. He felt some sentient presence, which he did not specify further, that was behind the individual planning of his experience.” (Pg. 178-179)
He concludes, “Do all these extraordinary and inspiring human experiences add up to proof of a life beyond death? I can answer that question in the positive. Yes, they do.” (Pg. 175)
This is a fascinating ‘summation’ book by Moody. He seems to have abandoned the somewhat ‘cynical’ and negative attitude of his book ‘The Last Laugh,’ and he stays away from the concept of reincarnation which he explored in ‘Coming Back.’ It will be ‘must reading’ for anyone studying NDEs and life after death.
গ্রন্থসমালোচনা: 'Proof of Life After Life: 7 Reasons to Believe There Is an Afterlife' লেখক: Raymond A. Moody Jr. ও Paul Perry
Raymond A. Moody Jr. এবং Paul Perry রচিত 'Proof of Life After Life: 7 Reasons to Believe There Is an Afterlife' এমন একটি বই, যা মৃত্যুর পরবর্তী জীবন সম্পর্কে আমাদের ধারণাগুলিকে একটি নতুন দৃষ্টিকোণ থেকে দেখার সুযোগ দেয়।
২. ‘Near-death experiences’ (NDE):
Jeszcze do teraz pamiętam jej okładkę. 7 powodów, by wierzyć w życie po śmierci". 7 powodów, by wierzyć w życie po śmierci" nadal będziecie sceptyczni, to chyba tylko własne doświadczenie śmierci was przekona.
Co-author Raymond Moody is credited for popularizing the term Near Death Experience (NDE) in his previous book Life After Life (1975). Given the numerous and independent accounts of NDEs over time, experts have sought to proffer alternative explanations for them. One of the most convincing (imo) is that NDEs are hallucinations attributable to oxygen deprivation and other chemical interactions (similar to a DMT trip). Perhaps in response thereto, in this book Mr. Moody and his and co-author Paul Perry explain why the existence of related phenomena corroborate NDEs as proof that consciousness survives the body. One is the Shared Death Experience (SDE), where those not facing death have similar experiences to their loved ones who had an NDE. Another is the ability of those who had an out of body experience to accurately describe their surrounding environment in spite of supposedly being unconscious. Most convincing for me (if true) is the concept of terminal lucidity, whereby brain damaged individuals have sudden clarity and clairvoyance. Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence, and so it must be said that all of the “evidence” the authors provide is anecdotal. In fairness, Messrs. Moody and Perry recognize this shortcoming and attribute the lack of quantifiable data to the nature of the subject matter and society’s skepticism for all things spiritual. They also tell the reader not to engage in confirmation bias by quoting C.S. Lewis, “If you look for truth, you may find comfort in the end; if you look for comfort you will not get either comfort or truth only soft soap and wishful thinking to begin, and in the end, despair.”
I came upon this 2023 book by accident, and I am glad I did. Since 1975, when Dr. Raymond Moody wrote Life After Life, his groundbreaking book about near-death-experiences (NDEs), I have seen the research and communication about NDE expand dramatically. I kept an open mind but only recently, grasped the deep reality of consciousness beyond the body.
Moody and his co-author Paul Perry provide an historical background of NDEs going back to the Greeks and the scientific research and observations that culminate in a well-written and accessible book about the objective proofs of NDE that will give even the skeptical pause. I particularly appreciate the authors' integrity and humility in presenting their proofs. Among the examples are the Shared Death Experiences in which bystanders who observe inexplicable changes in time and space, unusual auditory and visual experiences with the person near death.
Also discussed is Terminal Lucidity when dying people who may never have communicated in life or had limited sensory and physical abilities will suddenly rouse, speak articulately, move among the bystanders, hear and see for a brief time before dying. In other words, the state of the brain and body cannot explain this kind of full consciousness.
We continue to grow in our understanding of life after life and the power of consciousness to expand what we call "life."
Jeśli interesują was tego typu rozważania, zachęcam do przeczytania 😊
I think about death a huge amount. Not being morbid or anything, I'm just excited to see what comes after. The next great adventure. It's the unknown aspect that frightens people, I think. Does it really need to be so unknown? I don't think so, not anymore and books like this help people to understand that. I've never believed that death was the absolute end and now I have a chronic illness and possibly another even bigger illness ( I don't know yet) it is the equivalent of staring down the barrel of a loaded gun, just waiting for it to fire. Essentially, books like this are a comfort and also, proof. The smallest, most narrow, closed off of minds will choose to believe that what people see are hallucinations and so on, the brain dying, that tired old argument. One day, I'm certain, they will find out they were wrong. Consciousness survives IMO. We are not just here for the briefest of times, in this materialistic, ego driven world. We are infinite, and like Bill Hicks said 'It's just a ride.' I agree, and that makes me happy.
Polecam
Raymond Moody’ and Paul Perry’s engrossing new book Proof of Life after Life, is a very informative read, documenting a plethora of fascinating and thoroughly researched details of near death experiences, various remarkable related phenomena and post death communications. These offer the reader compelling evidence of what the author describes as life after life.
I found the book very engaging, thought provoking and convincing. I was particularly interested to read the chapter describing the Psychomanteum, its physical set up, the process of operation and the experiences of those engaged in its use. I had not heard of such a device before but found the information and outcomes of the experiments fascinating.
I would recommend this book to those others, particularly those interested in parapsychological material.
Thank you to NetGalley and Beyond words publishing, for a review copy in exchange for my honest opinion.
This book is amazing. I didnot pursue reading this one out of not being a believer of after life. Being a religious person and an egyptian in the first place give me this belive by default from my historical heritage as well as my religion. But i wanted to get more knowledge about the experience itself. Should we be fearful of death? What is our ultimate goal? After reading this book, i came out with some reviews. 1- Dying is not that fearful, sounds we go to unit with our god. We go and unit with the sacred light. 2- Your life events review is another thing that is heavily talked about in this book. You will feel not only your felings but also how you would affect others. So we should live trying to be kind. 3- Your main purpose of being alive is to love and spread this love all around. God is love and if we are part of the light, our mission should be to learn and practice the act of love.
Big thanks for the authors who are also researchers for their efforts and knowledge.
I remember when Dr Moody’s Life after Life came out in the late 70s. It was a best seller back then, and this update, after so many years, has some truly fascinating stories from not only the people who have a near death experience (NDE), but from the doctors who are treating them. When this subject became of such interest after initial publication, many people who had such experiences would not come forward because the medical staff didn’t believe them when told of their NDE. Now that shoe is on the other foot. The doctors and scientists are now struggling to understand how it is there can be no brain waves, but yet there is life. If anyone is looking for confirmation from scientific evidence rather than from faith, or if you are a person of faith and absolutely believe there is life after life, this book is for you.

4. Non-fiction, which I like. Good stories of near death experiences, secondary watchers of death phenomena: mists, sounds, orbs, multiple people seeing the same thing, messages across distances, precognition of events that weren’t likely to happen via dreams or hallucinations etc. It included data on how much more common these experiences are but people have withheld their memories of them, afraid to appear weird perhaps. Having had a few of these myself it’s fun to hear that it is more common and many others have had them. And a nice reminder that, in the end, money and power don’t amount to much. Love and kindness, in the life review of NDAers, made much more sense.
I respect the author's dedication to the whole "life after life" idea, and he reaaaally throws everything he's got at you. Unfortunately, his arguments fell way too short, for me. I mean... what was I expecting? A scientific angle? Of course not. I knew, going into this, that this was about near death experiences, shared death experiences, psychomanteum, and other supernatural stuff. I just never felt like the so-called "proof" was compelling. Most of what he covers can be explained by neuro-chemical surges, oxygen deprivation, and brain activity patterns rather than evidence of an afterlife. Oh well. I tried.
If you have read any of Moody's other books on what happens when people have near death experiences, there isn't much new in here. Mostly he organizes his thoughts into categories and explains the rationale behind them. Not a lot of new first personal experiences here. If you have NOT read any of his other books, this is a good book to read.
I have read several of Raymond Moody's books, and this one does not disappoint. I like the examples of things that other people have experienced. I also like that he refers to ancient people that have studied this phenomenon. If anyone wants more proof of an afterlife, this book will be a good read.
This is the best book of it's kind on the issue of life after death because it offers ideas and experiences that defy any other explanations than what they are. I'm going to keep this short because I don't want to offer any spoilers. I believe you will be profoundly moved and, above all, reassured.
Perfect and succinct summation of Moody’s sixty or so years of research into subjective and objective near death experiences and his past work with NDE, SDE, terminal lucidity and psychomanteums. It’s impossible not to be moved and inspired reading the testimonies within.
This book is a captivating argument that one survives one’s death; this is done logically in a very engaging manner presenting research and anecdotes of real life experiences to prove the point.
Interesting. Having lost many friends and family, thought I'd read. I do believe in the afterlife, heaven and God!! I read up until the part about setting up your own mirror apparatus!!! Not wanting to go that far!!
