I'm absolutely blown away by stumpwork! It's so ecclectic and kitsch! It also looks difficult however in saying that, this book is very clear with photographic colour illustrations and well worded and clear concise instructions. I think if I had this book with me, thoguh I would be intimidated, slow, and not at all neat, I would be able to make something using stumpwork as the technique!

Also the examples of work blow my mind.

I picked up three books whose authors have studied at the Royal School of Needlework. This one and it's companion in the series (Crewelwork) are simple enough to encourage a beginner to try the techniques but have enough detail to satisfy someone with some experience as well. The examples, some old and some very modern, are gorgeous.
