Jayne faces the fury of a family he's long neglected. But even if he can find a way to patch things up... a distress call from Requiem could spell disaster. Pure devastation may be in store, along with internal conflict, distrust as half the crew hunts for a dangerous target, and a secret on Jayne's end that no one truly expected! Despite Jayne trying to recklessly play hero, will the crew find more than they bargained for? Will the help of newly-trained allies be enough for Inara, Simon and Leonard to survive their newest enemy and find the cargo they pursue? Acclaimed comics writer David M. Booher (Specs), artist Vincenzo Federici (Teenage Mutant Ninja The Armageddon Game), colorist Francesco Segala (Maskerade), and Eisner-nominated letterer Jim Campbell (Damn Them All) reveal brand new mysteries, and the threat of an even deadlier weapon than the crew of the Serenity could have prepared for! Collects All-New Firefly # 5-8.
Part 2 of the story is... fine. Maybe I'm being overly critical, because I do appreciate the way the recent Firefly comics have gotten the characters more or less right while also being unafraid to move the story forward. (Any show/movie fans who come into this thinking that "All-New Firefly" is a good jumping on point are going to be very confused!) But it's also still just ok. The story stretches on for a year in serialized comics or three volumes in trade, and has a cost to match, but it never makes me feel like it's worth it.
We learn more about a young, teenage Jayne and how he grew up stealing to survive. Jayne's been the typical wildcard teammate. Is he trustworthy? Moreso, is he a good person? We learn more about what and why Jayne believes in this arc. ==== Bonus: This filling out of history and how it impacts their present can only be a good thing.
Bonus Bonus: Pacing at 4 issues is also key to making this feel like an episode from TV
Bonus#3: For them to have been together (minus Benitez) and Zoe to STILL not trust River?!
Ah back to finishing my graphic novel series. In this volume, we learn more about Jayne's past and why he left his hometown and family. The crew of Serenity is in a bind to help monks that have been robbed and chaos ensues. Wonderful story and I even like the new characters. Good graphics as well.
Jayne discovers some new family that he wasn't aware existed, we get more of a peek at his time growing up, and someone else is now stealing from both the monks and the former bandits that the Serenity crew helped in their last mission.
The stakes of the scenario feels very Firefly. I'm still not sold on the developments within the core crew however, none more so than the clichéd forced family foisted upon the Hero of Canton here.
This "All-New" run is the most consistent thus far from the BOOM! catalogue, so that's something...
