This cookbook immerses you in the world of Magic the Gathering. I feel like food and gathering comes together really well and that a cookbook is not that farfetched. Each section is broken down by different places in Magic the Gathering and they each have a little blurb about it before it dives into the recipes.
The pictures are beautiful and up close so that you can see what to expect. Each recipe has a paragraph tying it to Magic the Gathering and the names of the recipes tie in as well. Most recipes are just one page but some will trickle onto two pages. Difficulty ratings I felt like were helpful to know what I was getting myself into. Lots of pictures from Magic the Gathering woven into the pages. Some recipes are versions of things we know well (thumbprint cookies, ramen etc.) but also there some out of the box recipes (cocktails, granite gargoyle wings etc.)
I do wish the recipes underneath the recipe name they chose was what you are actually making so you didn’t have scroll through the recipe to see what it really is. A picture can be difficult to determine and not all of them were very clear.
Looking forward to: Emrakruller, Stowaway’s Staple, Zhalfirin Grilled Flank Steak and many more! #goodreadsgiveaway
**I will be reporting back once I make a few recipes to comment on accuracy of instructions etc.
I skimmed this once in the bookstore and grimaced at how underwhelming it was. Then I received this as a gift. So, I sat and tried...I really did.
The art is recycled, resized, and the formatting looks done in Microsoft Word. No recipe jumped out for me to try. I can find all the same recipes on Pinterest and other 'fantasy' setting cookbooks, or the Food Network. Some of the food photography is lacking and unappetizing. It looks like a generated cash grab.
There are no connections between the food and the plane, they are modern and have no immersion. The title puns are eye roll worthy. All that is presented just reminds me why I left the game behind; the lackluster lore that rode the coattails of Marvel, and Hasbro soullessness. If I don't care about the characters then I have no connection to the game. This is just another checkmark on their squeezing every drop from what MTG is worth.
The illustrations from the card game are impressive, the mini-adventures/remembrances make for interesting reading, and there is a photo of every recipe. Recipes are arranged by "plane" across the Multiverse -- I'd personally rather have recipes ordered by category like "dessert." And there is such a wide range of international dishes that I'm not sure many of us could find all the ingredients locally, even with the helpful Ingredients Glossary in the back. Beautiful to look at, fun to read, nothing I'm rushing to the store to get missing components for at this time. Back to the library for others who like it more.
Not my typical cookbook, but something unique. I'm not familiar with the game, but enjoy looking through cookbooks and finding new ideas for snacks, meals and drinks. Browsing through the book, I did find a few recipes that I might try, found the level difficulty of the recipes helpful and photos/illustrations interesting.
This book is awesome. It is a must have for all those that play MTG, even if you don't cook. I gave it to my 23 year old son, and he loved it. The art work is beautiful! The recipes are marked with difficulty levels, and the recipes are broken up by planes/cities. So well made...
All it needs is a scratch and scent option. Love it. Made a few of the recipes. You know food is going to be awesome when you walk into your home and your nose is greeted at the door and the whole house smells wonderful.
