In this smart and concise examination of the trends driving contemporary globalization, Jan Nederveen Pieterse argues that the United States' pursuit of global primacy is based upon a complex melding of neoliberal economics and hegemonic politics. Do alternate capitalisms offer viable alternatives to the American way? Globalization or Empire? looks at globalization with acuity and thoughtfulness and uncovers its underlying dramas.
I read this book for a class I took as an undergrad and it was taught by the author. I took this class in Fall 2004, when the United States had already been militarily engaged in Iraq for over a year and in Afghanistan for almost 2 years. We had truly frank and deep discussions in that class about the military-industrial complex, the neoliberal economic policies, the intertwining relationship and other related issues. It is a very dense book (content-wise), with a slant evident in the title. It was a very good supplement to our lectures, selected articles, and discussions for the class, but I'm not sure how helpful it will be for someone who just grabs the book from the shelf.
