Pretty bog-standard undead shoot-out with bad art and a huge rack. I mostly read through the whole thing because of a couple hints regarding the main character's inhuman nature, hinting at some kind of a twist at the end - but it was a pretty disappointing twist in that it really did not have anything to do with the rest of the story or the setting at all.
A zombies vs. vampires retelling of Sergio Leone's Fistful of Dollars, which is in turn a retelling of Akira Kurosawa's magnificent Yojimbo which was supposedly inspired by Dashiel Hammett's Red Harvest. Our main protagonist is a scantily-clad mute female gunslinger with improbably large boobs called Blondie. She's obviously meant to be a Clint Eastwood composite but there's so much fail if you actually just call it as you see it.
The adaptation is rather ham-fisted and juvenile and is only redeemed by Simon Bisley's gorgeous, gritty and gratuitous BSFW artwork (which is exactly what you would expect from him, tbh). I'm sure the story was meant to be tongue-in-cheek, irreverent and a totally OTP but you can't help but feel that as the narrative progressed, Bisley was thinking to himself, "oh, fuck, this story sucks. How can we rescue it? Got it! Bigger boobs!"
The denouement was symptomatic of everything that was wrong with this story - there was no foreshadowing, no logical connection to the ~130 pages that went before, in fact, it seemed like an afterthought. In the space of 4 pages we find out that the whole reason Blondie is in this stupid town is because she's actually .
It's like Sergio Leone's A Fistful of Dollars, except Clint Eastwood has massive breasts and fights undead abominations. Pretty much the definition of gratuitous, but not everything can be Shakespeare.
There's just not enough "there" there. I read this primarily for Bisley's art, which is still fun but attached to an uninspired, lazy parody with what are technically "characters" but really aren't. The plot hits the beats you expect; the action isn't as interesting as it could be/should be to elevate from what is essentially exactly the puerile sort of stuff you expect from a lesser Heavy Metal story.
It's okay, as the title suggests this is a retelling of Fistful of Dollars / Yojimbo but with zombies, vampires, and an alien babe. I can't determine if it's a homage or a rip-off in all honesty, but the title suggests homage. As said, this graphic novel is okay, as far as story goes it's not great but not horrible either. The artwork and style is fairly well done however.
I have two versions of this book available: this 2016 printing from IDW, and scans of the original 2002 comic from Heavy Metal. I read both to compare them and decide on which version I liked the most... which was probably too much effort for such a disappointing book.
The writing is much better in the new version; all toned up and providing better context and detail, cutting out most of the swearing and all of the slurs and racist humor. The nudity is toned down, especially from the protagonist who originally spent the half majority of the book wandering around naked. And the added color and tone really help in letting Simon Biesley's art shine.
All that said, the story remains the same: its a derivative of Fistful of Dollars with zombies, vampires, and a beautiful gunslinger who never utters a single word. Things get confusing and unstructured by the third issue, but wind up together in the closing act.
Really only worth it if you're keen on Simon Biesley's art, like I was.
Mute, smelly, big-boobed, gun-wielding woman fighting zombies and vampires who want to eat her? Throw in some ignorant tourists and bikers too for good measure. At least the covers keep getting sexier. But seriously, unless you enjoy any of the above, this comics sucks a big one.
I've read this today and there ar two versions. One has colour but is censored and he second is black and white but not censored. WHY do you censor stuff?
Basically you've got a mysterious naked (or dressed) woman that comes to a town fill with undead beings (Vampires) and we get some great action scenes of violence and more violente of a naked , very busty , lady and vampires. She is almost always silent so everything we know it's from third parties.
It remind me of other stuff I read\watch of a stranger coming to town and cleaning it up, but instead of bandidos you've got vampires, and instead of a male character (usually goodlooking) you got a naked good looking lady.
Although there is a lot of nudity, boobs and the womanthingy - there is no sex. Just a rape-try situation that lead to nothing.
I'm a big fan of Bisley and was happy to find Fistful Of Blood for a nice price. Little did I know that this was not just a reissue but Eastman had "re-mastered" the artwork. That pretty much means getting rid of all those little details that make Bisley look like Bisley. Sure the art still looks like his but something is missing. The story itself is a western horror story with contemporary/futuristic elements and a mysterious scantily clad protagonist with big boobs. Nothing special, nothing terrible, but it would have been a great vehicle for Bisley's art if only that art was there untouched. Now I need to start hunting for the pricey original Heavy Metal version of Fistful Of Blood.
Eastman and Bisley, two of the all-time greats in the world of comics, come together to create a fabulous book. With a solid story blending horror and humor, and super-sexy, hyper-violent art, this volume was a weird, fun read.
Don't get caught out by the free sample. 4 stars for the Art and 1 star for the story & plot.
The artwork is exquisite (I have always liked Kevin Eastman & Simon Bisley's artwork), however; the story itself starts ok and then swerves into a strange B movie-style plot. Then it simply goes off the rails and well read it for yourself and see. I would still buy the book solely for the art and if it was half price (this book isn't with £9). I can see where they were trying to take the book, but the plot of the story itself was bad. I can only assume they thought to themselves we can pull it off as we are Eastman & Bisley. Like I said previously I'm a fan of both Eastman & Bisley so the story was pretty disappointing.
