i deadass do not understand why this book has a relatively low rating (anything below a 4.5 is a crime...). and why half the reviews are people saying they don't understand it. if you dont understand this book perhaps you shouldn't be online because you are likely 6 or under and shouldnt have social media in the first place.

that aside... one of my favorite mangas. ive reread it like 3 times, absolute gem. its goodnight punpun but without the constant filler and junk and a dark, brief, intense and emotional rollercoaster ride of a story. takopi you will always be famous

Takopi’s Original Sin ripped my heart out of my chest.

This manga is heavy. At the same time, it’s incredibly beautiful.

Takopi is a little happy octo-alien from Planet Happy, and he’s looking to spread a bit of, well— happiness!

A young girl named Shizuka comes across the Happian, who she names Takopi.

But Takopi doesn’t understand Earth. He doesn’t comprehend what it means to be human. Like dealing with depression, estranged familial matters, bullying— heartache.

Takopi only knows simplicity and happiness.

So when Shizuka, just a fourth grader, takes her own life due to incessant bullying and unrelenting sadness— Takopi is confused and wants to do everything to bring her back and make her smile.

And from here, this extremely dark, slice-of-life manga takes many somber turns.

”Nothing exists to undo this.”

Death is undo-able. Until Takopi remembers a Happy gadget that assists in time travel. This should fix Shizuka’s life.

But time (travel) doesn’t heal all wounds. In Takopi’s Original Sin, it causes death and destruction.

And while Takopi rewinds time over and over again, desperate to reverse Shizuka’s suicide— we’re given more insight on her school bully, Marina, and a new friend called Naoki. They’re two fellow fourth graders that deal with plenty of their own trauma behind closed doors.

And somehow, the author finds a way to intertwine their lives in the darkest of ways.

This manga is trauma-ridden. From broken homes, to battling with depression and mistreatment across the board— Shizuka, Marina, and Naoki deal with it all. Three different lives end up sharing very similar stories.

And Takopi just wants to save them all.

This manga was incredible. I can’t understand some of the ratings and reviews— it’s not a hard manga to follow. Is it deep? Yes. And there are many loops/rewinds/travel-through-time moments. But— that’s what Takopi’s Original Sin is about. The time traveling aspect is fantastically done because with every rewind moment comes a bigger climax, whiplash plot twists, and a satisfying resolution. You might even shed a tear. Maybe even learn to love a bit harder and be a bit kinder.

And Takopi will steal your heart.

Be a Takopi in a world full of sadness.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ stars to this one here. Not only is it a dark read, but it’s moving. It helps you remember that our exteriors may be different— but so many times, our interiors are indistinguishable. You never know what someone is going through, they may be just like you.

A bizarre send up of Pokemon-type stories where an alien shows up and makes a child's life one of wonder and adventure. Here the happy little alien friend is at a loss when he fails to bring happiness to a girl so sad and bullied so relentlessly she sees suicide as the only way out. Even the ability to time travel seems useless in the face of domestic violence and emotional terrorism.

Bleak, weird, and loaded with outrageous twists. Compelling if you can get past the nearly unrelenting darkness.

This one gets pretty dark.

Basically a girl finds this little squishy alien who promises to bring happiness to her. This thing is learning about the human race and they are...not what he expected but he keeps trying. Time traveling, death, suicide, abuse, and much more. This is def for mature audience only, and while I did enjoy it, I would say it can be a bit jarring and hard to follow if don't pay attention. A 3.5 out of 5.

I honestly picked up this book because it had a drawing of a pink octopus (and I’m very week when it comes to them), but just after reading a few pages I have fallen in love with it completely.

It is a compelling story about an alien that tries to bring happiness to a few children that had their lives destroyed by their parents.
It is a story about how actions of those around us can influence our own behaviour and how often we can misplace our anger.
It is a story about love and compassion, and about how hard it is sometimes to show it to those that might need them most.

I strongly believe that this book is truly worth reading. Both for its beautiful art and wonderful message 🩷

It also has an alien shaped like a pink octopus so what’s not to love right?

the art style encouraged me to flip through a few pages at the store and when i saw takopi i assumed it was a kyubey clone and thought “yeah i can stomach something like this again” boy was i wrong on both counts. while it made me wince at times (not a bad thing) i appreciate how takopi’s original sin shows us the broader spectrum of abuse as well as survival. it does this by accounting the lives of three children struggling to balance school life and the weight of a broken home as they navigate the tightrope of growing up. be it physical abuse, emotional terrorism or flat out absence, there is no shortage of shitty parents and the hell they’ve unleashed upon this world in their mismanaged children. it’s been said plenty of times in more polished ways than what i can manage but takopi’s original sin provides a nice vivisection of the ‘imperfect victim’ trope as opposed to having the story shy away from the fact that kids are capable of cruelty, especially when it’s all they’ve ever known. attempting to scrub someone clean of their flaws, be it on account of their adolescence or trauma (or in this case both) to create this idealized version of a victim, is denying them their humanity. not unlike Lord of the Flies in that way, just imagine the severed boar’s head mounted on a spear is instead an overzealous octopus from planet happy. overall i appreciate how challenging the read was since this made it harder to put down. i will admit i initially wanted to deduct half a star because i wasn’t crazy about the ending but i sat with it for a minute and decided i actually liked it. was it a bit tidy, sure—but i get it. one, i wanted a brief read and i got it (albeit very heavy lmao) and two, i really don’t think i could’ve handled these kids enduring any more hell on earth. something else the ending highlighted that i haven’t seen discussed as much is the value placed on listening over scrambling to problem-solve. rather than devices or alien magic or approval or blind optimism, they just needed to be heard and given the space to feel. this is ultimately what ends up saving them from each other. it felt good to see everyone just cry it out. very cool read. watching all these sacrificial lambs convene on the altar of fate at the behest of a time traveling cephalopod was interesting, would read it again. maybe not so close to school being back in session lol

What in the world. Where do i even begin. This book was fenomenal. This book honestly made me feel sad, which I don't easily feel when reading. IT WAS S0000 SAADDDD!!!! But sooooo goooooood too. I'm not gonna lie, in every manga most of the time there are panels or moments where it is less interesting right. That's normal. But in this book, it had me hooked from start middle to end. I could reread this every month and it would still be so good. Let me watch the anime cuz that one will be good too.

What an unbelievably wild ride. I had an idea of what was going to happen based on the first two episodes of the anime, but this is something else.

The first manga in a while that really left me speechless at times and had me wondering how I felt regarding the characters and their decisions. It’s such a wonderfully complex and dark story with lots of uncomfortable juxtapositions, exactly what I like.

Lol, at the end when the main characters were crying and didn’t know why I was also doing the same. I’ll probably have to reread it or just watch it to get a better understanding. Was good though, would recommend but it’s pretty dark
