Unable to sleep at night, Ganta Nakami is cranky in class and unpopular with his classmates.
He discovers that the school observatory, once used by the now-defunct astronomy club, may be the perfect place for a nap—but he's not alone. Fellow insomniac Isaki Magari is willing to share the observatory with Nakami, and a friendship between the two begins as they bond over the most unlikely things.
Summer is swiftly approaching as members of the revived astronomy club are busy preparing for their first official event, a meteor shower watch party! Nakami and Magari have also agreed to go to the city's annual fireworks festival together. Every sleepless night brings the two closer, and their first summer as high schoolers promises to strengthen their bond even more…
“Everyone else seemed so happy all the time, I though it must be so nice, but...in reality everyone has their own worries that they don’t want the world know about...”
“It’s thanks to you, Magari, that I was able to see things differently”.
The viewing at the school rooftop for the fireworks festival went really well. As long as the relationship of the two main characters grow at the same relaxed pacing as this series, I have no complaints. Let it be as anxiety-free as a slice-of-life should be.
I LOVE this series! Each volume has been as good as the last. I love the MCs, their relationship with one another and the friendships they are building due to starting the astronomy club at their high school. The "love" is a SLOOOOW burn, but it makes sense and isn't slow just to be slow or for the plot, it feels natural and sweet and I am DOWN for it.
One slight quibble, I kind of want to see them passing out next to each other in the observatory more. It's sweet, innocent and speaks VOLUMES with how comfortable they are with one another that the only place they can really be themselves and let go of the world is with each other. SQUEE!!!
Highly recommended if you are looking for a non-sports, realistic high-school coming of age story with normal drama levels.
5, I just love how sweet and gentle this series is and want more now, stars!
My thanks to NetGalley and VIZ Media LLC for an eARC copy of this book to read and review.

Fireworks are in the cards for Nakami and Magari. Since, you know, they promised to watch them together. But since they’re also the most comfortable around one another, you can probably start to take that as a more metaphorical way too.
I know that ‘charming’ is one of the most abused words in my reviewing repertoire, but good lord is this series ever charming. It is one of the most adorable high school stories I’ve read, set apart by its unique premise and wonderful characters.
And the art, too, which has such excellent facial expressions that it makes the whole thing look easier than it possibly could be. There are even some really interesting perspective shots, including a reflection in the eyes of the mascot cat, which were really clever.
Magari gets several full page spreads this volume and the way she’s portrayed makes it pretty clear that this is how Nakami is seeing her in the moment, which makes a huge difference from how most stories would frame it as straight up artist’s gaze. This just feels different, in a good way.
There is certainly an unreality to this series, I would not be so pedantic to call it dreamlike, that makes it feel like a narrative, but a very well crafted one that knows which feet to keep planted on the ground. Some of the conversations may be a little beyond the scope of the leads’ ages, but that’s a small quibble.
Nakami is still a mope, but he is a mope in love (even if he’s having trouble making the connection there), and a lot of what he finds himself up to is all for Magari, who is slowly bringing him out of his shell just by being in his life.
And they’re both very shy at times, but Magari is the bolder one by half. She’s just the right side of manic pixie dream girl, honestly, because she brings so much to Nakami’s life, but she isn’t just there to be crazy. She has her reasons.
Those reasons and a very throwaway line that Nakami totally doesn’t notice, but I certainly did, suggest that this might not be the happiest ending, which I’m already mentally preparing to leave me a hot mess because these two are so fun together.
Back to the story, I’ve been blessed with yukata fake-outs in manga recently, and the one here was really good. There’s a clear moment when all the other girls are wearing theirs and Nakami still only has eyes for Magari that is so wonderfully done. Then she clearly wants to impress him, so the story does have its cake with that one.
There are so many moments here that I could gush over. This is slice of life at times, yeah, but it’s a slice from one of the best cakes I’ve ever had. The way these people interact is so engaging - even the girl who thinks Nakami is kind of crap has an amazing moment and that’s the sort of thing that elevates the whole volume.
That poster for the meteor shower? Seriously? That’s like two Manga Moments rolled into one, with a hilarious gag before it for good measure. And the incredible section at the end with the radio stations. It’s all so smartly done.
This story is fantastic. It’s to the point where I never read a volume of this and think of a thing I would change and instead just get impatient waiting on another book to come out. It’s funny, it’s sweet, it has drama, it has a great cat (with many names), and it has complicated people.
5 stars - this is brilliant and it just sings the whole volume with all the awkward and clever and beautiful moments you’d want from a story about teenagers figuring themselves out and finding their place.
This series is really extraordinary. It's quiet and peaceful, but it centers around kids dealing with anxiety and an inability to sleep due to it. It's gentle and calm, but the emotional stakes run high at times and it creates a rollercoaster of sorts. I know I wind up repeating myself with this series, but I am absolutely captivated by it. It's a really safe space and maybe one of my favorite ongoing series at the moment. It asks very little of the reader, but I find I can't put it down once I start.
I whole heartedly recommend this series to everyone. While it may not land for all, there is something really enchanting about it and it could be a really great change-of-pace book for a lot of readers.
so far this series is so wholesome and we learn more about the characters as they are also learning about each other, the side characters are also interesting.
Es un manga súper agradable de leer. Sigue su propio ritmo, con páginas sin diálogos que crean una atmósfera muy especial. Estoy encantada con la historia de estos dos insomnes y su entorno y ver cómo los protagonistas se van acercando poco a poco.
A sedate series slows down even more as we spend a volume on the festival / yukata / fireworks trope and the slow organizing of an observatory club activity.
My local library has the next volume on order, but I'm on the fence about whether I'll get it.
Yes yes yes yes
Magari and Nakami need to find people to help spread the word about the meteor shower party, the first astronomy club event. And to engage with people around them, they also decided to go to the fireworks festival. They invited some of their friends to watch it from the observatory bringing both the schoolmates and the 'couple' together! I really want them to be one hahaha! I just thought the series was a 3 volume story, but I was wrong 🫠. Not sure if I will be able to continue, I don't have the patience to read many volumes anymore...
Okay these two are creeping up to super cute couple. They will be soon anyway. I thought the plotlines weren't super original, but the vibe and overall laid back dreamy feel of this story makes it very very comfy read. Super enjoyable characters with solid plotting and art. Also, how cute was the Radio idea? SO CUTE.
i'm starting to like this serie more and more, slice-of-life is liking eating hot fresh cookies on a cold day, nice and warm form the body and the soul (i don't know what i'm saying, please ignore me)
Adorable / 20 tout simplement C’est tout doux, un ciel étoilé à contempler, et j’ai eu envie de pleurer sur la fin donc c’est validé J’adore cette série de mangas vraiment
