Chrome’s fight against the Wilhelm the Iron Wall seems to have taken a dark turn, but Roue is there to bring him through. After cutting it close, the pair wind up at a colosseum and may have a lead on Heaven Land, if they should even be going there in the first place…

So, the whole reason this gets a free pass to four stars is because of a gorgeous series of late-volume panels where Chrome picks up a discarded limb and wings it into the head of another robot. The composition on the sequence is absolutely fantastic and one of the sharpest bits of action I’ve seen in a bit.

Otherwise, the story continues to hew towards its shonen nature, but not to the extent of everything else. It’s asking good, classic questions about the nature of artificial life and how alive it truly is. It’s philosophical in between beatdowns, and that kind of ‘meet me in the middle’ gesture is appreciated.

I’m also a sucker for a good quest fraught with peril and a clear goal. The mystery of what, precisely, Heaven Land actually is remains obscured, but there’s an obvious reason for our leads to be putting themselves in harm’s way to get there. They just maybe should have done their research first.

Roue’s written young, but not stupid, so that means she isn’t annoying in the slightest. Her major problem is currently how naive she is about how not great the world out there can get - her survival skills are top shelf provided understanding others isn’t involved.

Chrome doesn’t exactly know himself well just yet - his upper reasoning shutting down so he could kick the stuffing out of Wilhelm the Iron Wall left him as basically a literal killing machine, so there’s mystery afoot. It’s certainly not wasting the premise.

Even the hackneyed colosseum plot is given a neat spin, as it’s basically the end game for a bunch of robots that are literally born to destroy and in a world that is shockingly scarce on humans this gives them their purpose.

It serves to push how unique Chrome is - he chose his path in life, whereas the other robots didn’t. Ironically, to achieve his goals that puts him in the exact same position anyway, but that’s more a nice touch than anything else.

This has the feel of a journey, which is really important to making its goals interesting to the reader. We’re just getting into the details of what could be up against Roue and Chrome, but a little battle mixed with some philosophy (and sentient cameras that belong in film school) goes a long way.

Special shout-out to the flashback for Wilhelm’s history as the guardian of that bridge. It is a story of a purpose that slowly becomes a prison due to rigidity and uniqueness that is actually nothing of the sort. It’s really good.

My biggest complaint is when the more unnecessary shonen bits get in the way. Outside of Roue, this story has shown no clue how to dress a female character up as anything but fan service and if I was hard on the maid last volume that’s nothing compared to this one and the new robot they introduce, who makes a real fashion statement. And that statement is, ‘a dude drew this’.

There’s also the very obvious risk that this could all collapse on itself very easily. It’s one thing to go on a journey, and this is off to a very strong start, but it’s another entirely to complete the thing without going off the rails.

4 stars - throw an arm well enough and you can succeed in manga, apparently. This is really good shonen and I haven’t been so hopeful for one in quite a while because, some choices aside, it asks interesting questions.

This one didn't work for me as much as the first volume did. The female gears in this were dressed, or not dressed, in such a male-gazy, over-sexualized way that it left a really bad taste in my mouth.

Also, the storyline seemed to falter a tad, as I knew they wanted to get to Heaven Land, but for the life of me, I couldn't recall WHY and it wasn't really clear/given in context clues until the very end.

The Big Bad is REALLY bad and I don't know how the "good guys" are going to survive TBH, as they are both very young and naive and don't know enough to know more than "This doesn't feel right," but not know how to not just be swept away by what's being planned around them.

I read a spoiler for the next volume and wow...I just don't want to read about things getting even darker for our MCs. I'm really waffling on what to rate this. It's 2.5, but no half star option, so what will it be? I think I'm going to round down, as the only female character we have been shown in the last two books so far who isn't dressed provocatively is the 11 year old girl and I dread what is going to happen next. This took a TURN from the first volume and I'm not sure I can handle it. Also, it's difficult for me to follow what is happening with the artwork. It could be due to me reading on a smaller screen and old lady eyes, so take that for what it's worth.

If you like dystopians with hope being slowly snuffed out, this is the series for you.

2, I was expecting something different and got this instead, stars.

My thanks to NetGalley and VIZ Media LLC for an eARC of this book to read and review.

The story follows up really well from the first, with some more action scenes added in! If you’ve read the first, you should read the second!

Reading the official English translation through an app called “MANGA Plus by SHUEISHA”.
I truly hope this series doesn’t get cancelled prematurely like Black Torch did. This was a great continuation from the first volume.

After the fight with the "Iron Wall," much of this volume is Roue and Chrome venturing around, hoping to find someone who knows how to get to Heaven Land so they can revive Zett. It becomes almost a slice-of-life story for awhile...until they catch wind of someone who might be able to point them in the right direction, and we find ourselves with the looming prospect of a tournament arc.

See, the gear who might have that info is an old battle command model named Wodan, and he spends his days running never-ending fights at a makeshift colosseum, ostensibly to give combat gears with nothing else to fight for a sense of purpose. I've seen tournament arcs show up, greatly overstay their welcome, and ruin otherwise-good sci-fi manga before (looking at you, Battle Angel Alita: Last Order...), so the prospect of Heart Gear sinking into one--especially this early on--was distressing, to say the least.

Thankfully, several elements come into play that should save this series from that fate. A potential usurper to Wodan's position is currently causing trouble at the colosseum, making a drawn-out series of fights seem unlikely. Also, an actual resident of Heaven Land has taken a rather keen interest in our heroes...for better or worse, which further promises to complicate matters, and make them more interesting than a side plot that's just a bunch of battles. Plus, as an added bonus, we're introduced to No. 06 (AKA: "Rock"), a disaffected camera gear who wants to film art, not just ultimately meaningless carnage. I like Rock. He has personality, spirit, and an unexpected amount of depth, and I really hope he joins Roue and Chrome when they leave the colosseum.

All in all, I'm continuing to like Heart Gear. It's well-realized post-apocalyptic sci-fi, with likable characters and excellent art. I do still have my reservations about just how resilient Chrome seems to be (there are a lot of explosions at one point), but I'm still willing to give that a pass for now, because I want to see where this story goes.

In the second volume of the Heart Gear series we pick up right where we left off in volume one with Chrome fighting a pretty big gear that is guarding a bridge that they need to cross. After overcoming that little speed bump they journey on their way to try and find Heaven Land so that Roue can fix Uncle Zett. Along the way they meet a few new characters such as a cosmotology robot that does Roue's hair and a bunch of fighting robots at an arena called Valhalla. If they want info from the gear that runs Vahalla, Chrome will have to fight his way to the knowledge.

This was a really great volume. I like that we are learing more about the different gears and getting some more backstory on Roue and Zett. I will defintely be continuing this series, I'm really enjoying it.

So Chrome went into berserk mode and turned into a unicorn? Aight, whatever. The point is that Roue managed to bring him back to his senses and he realizes that his other mode is on a long list of things he doesn't know about.

But then we get to see more gears performing their base programs to the best of their ability even if there are no more humans around to benefit or make true use of them. Like a colosseum of battle gears without a true outlet for their destructive purposes.

Then there's the underlying mystery that is Heaven Land.

The story is still promising, the art style is a joy to look at and I'm beginning to get a feel for the characters. However, I'm still side eyeing the series a bit. The sus panels of Roue, and how she doesn't really look like a child, when as far as I know she's supposed to be like 10 or 11, is very much in the back of my head while reading. It's a shame really because the series asks some interesting questions about humanity, what it means to be an individual, life purposes and what is means to be alive, so I really don't want my fears for the series being right.

Thank you NetGalley and Viz Media for this arc!!

5/5 stars!

I am absolutely loving this series so far! The way this opens with the one Gears backstory and internal monologue was so interesting. I love the little tidbits between each chapter that flesh out this AI dependant (former) world, it really makes this world feel so much bigger than these 170~ pages. I am really excited to see where the next volume leads with how this one ended!!!

J'ai préféré le premier tome... Celui-ci, bien plus axé sur les combats, était moins équilibré... Trop de bagarre et pas assez d'histoire à mon goût. J'adore toujours autant les traits "brouillon" des Gears!

solid second volume, though some of these female-presenting robots are starting to get quite ridiculous and overly sexualized lol...

I'm intrigued by the new cast of characters in valhalla and am hoping they find some friends or at least allies in the mix!!

This is quickly becoming one of my favorite manga series, and I hate having to wait for each volume! I don’t want to get into the second volume too much, in case you haven’t read 1 yet, but the premise of Roue being the only human left of a post apocalyptic world overrun with gear with only her protector Chrome there to keep her safe is just so much fun to read!
