Naruto was a young shinobi with an incorrigible knack for mischief. He achieved his dream to become the greatest ninja in the village and his face sits atop the Hokage monument. But this is not his story... A new generation of ninja is ready to take the stage, led by Naruto's own son, Boruto!
HINDRANCE
Boruto may have survived his dance with death thanks to some Ohtsutsuki meddling, but the trouble is just beginning. When Code and Eida show up in Konoha Village, even Naruto and Sasuke may be powerless to stop them.
Masashi Kishimoto (岸本斉史 Kishimoto Masashi) is a Japanese manga artist, well known for creating the manga series Naruto. His younger twin brother, Seishi Kishimoto, is also a manga artist and creator of the manga series O-Parts Hunter (666 Satan) and Blazer Drive. Two of his former assistants, Osamu Kajisa (Tattoo Hearts) and Yuuichi Itakura (Hand's), have also gone on to moderate success following their work on Naruto.
Kishimoto's first work as a manga artist was Karakuri (カラクリ?), which he submitted to Shueisha in 1995. This earned him the Weekly Shōnen Jump's monthly "Hop Step Award" in 1996, granted to promising new manga artists. This was followed in 1997 by a pilot version of Naruto (NARUTO-ナルト-), published in Akamaru Jump Summer. In 1998, Kishimoto premiered as a Weekly Shōnen Jump artist with a serialized version of Karakuri in Weekly Shōnen Jump, but it proved unpopular and was canceled soon after. In 1999, a serialized version of Naruto began publication in Weekly Shōnen Jump and quickly became a hit.
After years of following the series, I figured leaving my review on the final tankoban of “part one” would be best. Boruto is a series that had a world of potential, but squandered it in pursuit of meaningless linearity. Masashi Kishimoto spent nearly 20 years world building with the original series, Naruto, and the future was looking bright for Naruto’s son as the possibilities were endless. The other cast members of the original have had kids of their own as well, and many people clamored to see how their stories would unfold, how they’d interact, etc.
Unfortunately, a lot of these characters fall to the wayside, as it locks onto Boruto and Kawaki’s situation for a good chunk of the story. The antagonist is a being far more powerful than that of the original series, making the possibility of the new generation overcoming them seem somewhat improbable. Stronger characters are “narratively nerfed” in the laziest of ways to make way for the new generation to shine, though it fails terribly. Because of this, the power scaling and supporting concepts of the Narutoverse are dismantled and messy, and the premise of ‘ninja’ feels long gone.
There’s a saying in the 48 laws of power by Robert Green—Never outshine the master, and sadly Boruto aims to do just that. It would have been better if they focused on him, his relationship with his peers and with other young shinobi from other villages with differing beliefs, all whilst navigating this new world that his father sacrificed so much for. Instead, it comes across as a flashy, edgy, tone deaf attempt to dethrone its predecessor, all whilst not having nearly as much heart.
For those who may say “they do this in the anime/novels”, please understand that culturally, since the beginning, manga has served as the core source cannon for all series that spawn from it; a canonical bible of sorts. Boruto’s direction in telling parts of the story through other forms of media while the manga is still in serialization is in large part due to the manga’s dreadful pacing, and even more dreadful story. The fact that these interactions do exist in other mediums does not make this acceptable, as it traditionally falls on the manga to tell the purest and most concise version of the events.

Decent volume; fits the 3 star "liked it" description perfectly.
The Boruto manga is inherently disadvantaged by the fact that it's a direct sequel of the very, very beloved Naruto manga, but that's a whole other discussion. Point is, I personally find that there's a ceiling, so to speak, of enjoyment I can get out of this series. Yes, Ikemoto's art is clean as always (and kinda uncomfortable around Sarada as always), Code is a serviceable villain, and Mitsuki is fantastic, but...
...that inherent disadvantage I mentioned earlier is always rearing its head. Fans of Naruto, myself included, are always frustrated when the OG cast is humiliated because the new gen need things to do, narratively speaking. It's less about nerfing and powerscaling for me (although that's also something that breaks immersion for me, occasionally) and more about "hey, we went through 700 chapters with these guys and we just want them to have happy, peaceful lives".
Not a bad volume on its own, though. Kawaki's character is developing in a really interesting way, and I do like the dynamic he and Sasuke have going on. Also rather interested, as all Boruto fans most likely are, in the way things will lead to the flash forward in chapter 1.
This was such a page turner of a volume, honestly finished it in 30 minutes or so and that was with examining a lot of the panels in more detail than usual. The discussion between Shikamaru, Amado was vastly compelling, along with Eida, Deimon, and Code having their back and forth. I like how things ended with Konoha potentially gaining another ally or two while Code is built up as the big bad. Also, lol at Bug being strung along still...and Code grabbed him out of mercy, so the kid has a goodside to him?
I really hope something bad doesnt happen to Kawaki and Boruto and no one turns on either of them. Feels like a major scandal ready to happen.
Artwise...why do they love the VWOOOOO sound effect so much lol.
- The aftermath of the battle. Code slipped through Claw Marks that he puts on Shikamaru's back. Shikamaru commands Bronco, a new version of Delta that will be a battle asset for Konoha. Bronco fights with Code. Code then pulls Eida through the Claw Marks.
- Amado, Bronco and Shikamaru become Eida's captive. Eida tells Shikamaru that he likes Kawaki. Shikamaru wants to make a proposition with Eida that he wants Eida to side with Konoha. In return, she can be with Kawaki and expresses her feelings.
- Kawaki is on his way to the room. Code and Eida want to retreat. They bring along Amado. Amado removed Code's limiter and in return he wants his life spared. Code wants to kill Amado but Amado wants to say something about Kawaki.
- Eida asks Code to stop but he still wants to kill Amado. Daemon fights with Code. Bug says that Daemon can reflect attack whenever he touch the person. But, Code still lose the fight. Code then fled away along with Bug.
- Amado says Eida should accept Konoha offers. Amado said that he have the shutdown command code to Kawaki. He implanted the Karma if Konoha doesn't want to protect him anymore. But still he have another motives.

This is the volume that everyone will be saying the manga is getting good and agreed like just the way it is sort of levelling up is insane.. like you have the re-emergence of Code and this time he wants Amado no matter what but the focus is shifted to Shikamaru and how will he stop this foe and also enter Daemon and ultimately Eida, and what does that mean for the Konoha village at large? Also we check in with Kawaki and Boruto and I love whats happening with them!! Its kinda amazing seeing these plot points come together and the reveals...!! they are so worth it!
I love the manga, its no hesitation to say that, just when you think its going one way, it flips itself and you're surprised not checked because it makes sense keeping with the character and their motives even if its funny lol.. so yeah loved it.. definitely recommending this one!
Next volume is gonna be kinda funny though with who comes to Konoha next!
The aftermath of Kawaki killing Boruto leaves tension in the village. But that doesn't really matter right now because Shikamaru has one of Code's claw marks on his back. Thankfully Shikamaru is aware of it (he better be, please don't make my boy look stupid) and has a plan to potentially pull Code out of hiding.
Then a couple things go sideways, then they get turned upside down, and then flopped over for an almost 270° turnabout as alliances on both sides splinter. There's only two books left, so we're coming up on a climax. But the two possible outcomes are happy ending or planetary destruction, and at this point, I just want it to be over.
I just remembered about this series and decided to re-read and review it. It's been more than 2 years since I last reviewed the previous volume. Because we get 1 chapter each month, I completely forgot about it. The last volume ended with a huge cliffhanger but we all know Boruto won't/can't die right now. This was, overall, a good volume but since it's the conclusion to Code Arc, it was a bit slow. Still, it was nice to learn more about Eida, Daemon and others.
Niveau crédibilité on repassera.
On verra…
The explanation for Code and the cyborgs being bigger opposing threats to the okutsu-whatever the fucks is such an ass pull, but they r much better antagonists I feel, n now Code really has valid reasoning for his destruction of konoha, i can get behind this finale a lot more. N urgh the designs r just so pleasing to the eyes, it feels very bleach inspired
This series has been quite good right from the start. I am liking the new generation of characters, the older characters, the new baddies, the back-and-forth as some characters' motivations remain questionable... but also and especially Naruto forever being Naruto.
This is the shikamaru I know and love. He is sooo smart and his intelligence saved the situation again… I’m very interested to see what Amados grand plan is here
