Mashle: Magic and Muscles, Vol. 14

Rate this book
In the magic realm, magic is everything—everyone can use it, and one’s skill determines their social status. Deep in the forest, oblivious to the ways of the world, lives Mash. Thanks to his daily training, he’s become a fitness god. When Mash is discovered, he has no choice but to enroll in magic school, where he must beat the competition without revealing his secret—he can’t use magic!

Rayne is driven into a corner by Innocent Zero’s fourth son, Delisaster. Finn tries to jump in to help, but Rayne stubbornly refuses his brother’s aid. Meanwhile, Lance and Dot run into the third son, Epidem, but ignore him and start fighting each other instead. Elsewhere, a violent beast tamer and his cerberus catch up to the unconscious Mash, placing the fate of the world in Lemon’s loving hands!

it has to suck being a bad guy in this manga, cause every good guy you can fight is either weird as fuck or just absolutely mentally ill or both

I find myself having less and less to say about Mashle as the series goes on. It's very good, but in a way that I've seen countless times before in other manga. There's nothing really standing out to me despite enjoying it in the moment. I'm just gonna keep rating it, but my thoughts do really boil down to "Yup. It's Mashle"

Iba a poner 4 estrellazas, porque cierto momento me ha hecho soltar la lagrimita, pero luego ha llegado el final con la única chica del grupo teniendo el "poder del amor" y me he cagado un poco en cristo, la verdad sea dicha.

This is mostly a display of all Mash's friends doing cool shit. Finn, Lance, Dot, and even Lemon get glowups. Finn's was probably the "best" to me, in a narrative sense, but it was a bit unfortunate that the fight was mostly still his brother fighting. That double-line spawn was cool as fuck though. Pretty neat to see Lance's third line undo itself from stress. Somewhat surprised Dot didn't get another line, but I like how his forehead cross remains the main thing, rather than how something like Naruto became a clusterfuck with Kekkei Genkai powers in the back third of that story. I'm mildly disappointed Lemon didn't get to do much with the Cerberus, in favor of having the fire guy save the day, but I guess that's standard for shōnen manga, especially with how much a fujo-friendly sausage-fest this one is (lol).

This final arc of the series has been my favorite one of all, and I'm really loving how intense these past few volumes have been. Sure, there are the elements that every one has: the constant battles, the insane portagonists, the only slightly more insane antagonists, weird spells, and constant monologuing interjected with flashbacks. Even if the formula has been used so many times that most things are relatively predictable, I'm still really enjoying it. Whereas some people might, understandably, find it boring, I find it rather comforting. I think there's enough variety between the characters, the magic used, and the overall plot of each book that I don't always mind that the books don't always stand out for me.

This volume immediately picks off where we left of with the last one, with the gang that snuck into Innocent Zero's citadel and being seperated into four groups to face off with the four eldest sons. We saw the beginning of Rayne and Finn's fight with the fourth son Delisaster, but we finish it up in this volume. Those two are so sweet together, and I really liked getting to see them fight side by side for the first time. Meanwhile Lance and Dot face the third son, Epidem, Orter goes against the second son Famin, and Ryoh just isn't there. I thought he was going to go against Doom, but I'm sure he'll show up in the next book. I did really miss him. As with the last volume, I have really enjoyed the fact that Mash is out of things at the moment and that we've got time to really explore the other characters. It will be nice to have him back, but most of my favorite characters aren't super major characters, so I've enjoyed seeing more of them. I believed I've finally narrowed it down my favorites, and I'd say that in order it's Rayne, Ryoh, and Orter. Oh Ryoh, I missed you...

In my opinion, the best fight in this volume was Dot+Lance against Epidem, the third son, which makes sense seeing as that's the scene that they put on the cover. This isn't the first time those two have paired up before, but I really liked getting to see their dynamic grow over the series before reaching its peak here. They've always had a sort of "rivalry" (if you can even call it that because it's just Dot beefing with Lance out if principle), but I thought it was pretty funny how half of the fight was just them beating each other up. And it's funny because usually the villains are supposed to be the more deranged ones, but in this situation I might have to say Pudding Boy was way more sane than the other two. That being said Epidem was really funny. After all, his whole shtick is that he's obsessed with pudding, so what was I expecting? I mean, he's essentially a mad scientist who experiments and tortures people for fun, but he also is in love with pudding. It makes him sound like Harley Quinn.

The fight was great, though, and I loved how it was pretty much Dot and Epidem shooting at each other with machine guns. Dot's abilities and his mark have mostly been glossed over so far, and even now the explanation is vague, but I liked seeing him have a moment of pure intensity and power.

However, I did feel a bit let down by Orter and Famin's fight. Famin is the second son, and therefore the second most powerful, plus he's pretty much insane and is constantly threatening his own broters. But he didn't feel powerful at all. Orter was able to overtake him relatively easily, and the whole fight was over in the blink of an eye. I liked the circus theme that was present, and the arena they were in is extremely exciting, but I do not feel like this fight's potentail was reached. I suppose you could argue that the whole thing with Famin is that he isn't as powerful or strong as he says he is, and so he has to use tricks and cheats to win, which I understand. I just wish this fight had been drawn out a bit more so that we could have seen more of Famin as a character. Of course, it isn't the end of the world that this fight was pushed to the side in order to focus on the other two, but I can't help like feel that this fight could have had the potential to be as big and interesting as the others.

One other small detail that I particularly liked about this volume was that Lemon got a small moment to herself at the end. She's always been an odd character because she really is only there to be a reoccuring bit, but I do like that she is playing (or at least trying to play) an important role right now. She may seem like just a silly character, but she does have a big heart and is a lot stronger than you would initially think. However I do love how even with the help of a divine visionary, THREE of them can't even turn that crank.

Even though I would say that the last volume was definitely stronger in every single aspect, I still did really love this one. This volume carried on the energy and excitement from the last volume, which was especially great for me because I went on vacation so there was a bit of a gap between when I read them! As I've mentioned before, because of where the story is right now I can't help but be wrapped up in it all. The stakes are quite high now, especially with several divine visionaries out of the way and Mash not even fully recovered! I can't wait to see what happens from here, and more importantly, how will Lemon, Kaldo, and Ochoa turn the crank??????

Mash and his friends continue their battle against the forces of evil, facing off against powerful enemies and uncovering dark secrets. Where is Mash? He's missing out on a family reunion.

MASHLE: Magic and Muscles is a manga series that will leave you spellbound! Published in Shonen Jump, this series follows the story of Mash Burnedead, a magicless protagonist in a world full of magic. The manga is a comedy with a vibe akin to a mashup of One Punch Man and Harry Potter. The story is set in a world where magic is everything, and those who don’t possess it are considered weak. Mash, however, is an exception to this rule. He has no magical abilities but makes up for it with his incredible physical strength. The series is known for its unique blend of humor, action, and fantasy elements, making it a must-read for fans of the genre. The series has been praised for its engaging storyline, well-developed characters, and stunning artwork. It has also been adapted into an anime series, which has been well-received by fans.

MASHLE: Magic and Muscles is a hilarious and action-packed manga that is sure to delight fans of shonen manga. The series features a lovable cast of characters, epic battles, and plenty of humor. If you're looking for fun and entertaining read, MASHLE is worth checking out!

These volumes have been fun to read and I’m still very much enjoying the series! Finn is one of my favourite characters too so seeing his development over these last two volumes has been fantastic but I’m really feeling Mash’s absence!

Part of the appeal for me with Mash was seeing a main character so apathetic to the usual shonen goings on. Mash is just as earnest as any other shonen lad but he’s not going to scream about it. And there’s been a lot of earnest screaming over these last two volumes from the secondary characters.

I’m really hoping we get our MC back up and running in volume 15 because I’m not sure if I can take much more without him!

{Another minor gripe I’ve had is the ultimate wand abilities, I kinda hoped we would get something else? It just feels like ‘well, we need to have a bankai/quirk for everyone to scream when they’re levelling up!’ Mash has felt like a breath of fresh air in the genre and this just feels so standard? And these attacks mostly being named after Greek Gods just doesn’t feel particularly integrated into the world. With the setting being mostly drawn from England/Harry Potter, I feel like it’s a bit of a missed opportunity to not draw from UK mythology (at the very least) instead.}

Someone wrote that you know what the worst person to be in this series is? The villains! ha ha ha This volume really has me feeling much like the last volume that the gang is finally realizing how much stronger they are when working together as opposed to relying on their own strength and skills. So many of the battle scenes would make amazing posters in anyone's room. This is the type of volume you could buy an extra one of and cut pages out to decorate all sorts of things. Another solid volume. Just wish there was more Mash in the volume. Hajime Komoto has made a series I was unsure about, but now I find will be something to recommend to my fellow manga fans that I feel will not disappoint.

The battle to defeat Innocent Zero's sons begins - but between Rayne refusing to let Finn help, Lance and Dot fighting each other more than their opponent, and Lemon defending Mash on her own from a criminal and his three headed dog, their chances are starting to look slim...Komoto delivers plenty of exciting action and corny but charming heart in this thrilling entry. Can our heroes band together to stop their enemies, or will their infighting be their downfall?!

Pudding brother has a magical girl transformation. WTF!

Puddin montage for the win!

Sister complex for the win!

Why are all clowns the same? Brother clown need to calm down….

Also, glasses hero has his glasses perch on the tip of his nose, right? So, why do his eyes turn into threes when the glasses fall off? They’re not even up to his eyes!?

By volume 14 of Mashle, less comedic relief and more "fight" scenes that will make you feel helpless since Mash isn't awake yet. But not to worry because his friends and other divine visionaries are here to ward off Innocent Zero & his dastardly sons.

Note: I just miss the previous volumes where it balances comedy and action.

I enjoyed this volume because it features two duos who normally hate each other coming together to take on their enemies. Mash's positivity has truly had a huge influence on his friends, and I love seeing it. And this was yet another volume with Mash out of commission. I hope he's back for volume 15.

In which we learn about the power of teamwork. You can also see a lot of characters flashing back to Mash being inspirational or giving them advice they are now ready to use. Some of that was really quite sweet and helped the plot. Mash is still down for the count in this volume and we are running out of time, so I'll be curious to see what the author still has planned.

Decent Combat but Little Story Movement

Volume 14 draws out the battle with the allies and the Innocent Zero sons. Decent overall but barely moves the needle as well as reminds us of how much more fun Mash's wins tend to be.

It’s kind of fun trying to spot all the nods to other manga. Strong nod to Naruto at the beginning of this volume. The middle to last part got quite confusing to work out what exactly was going on re the action.

Needs more Mash. The bit where nobody can wind the key is funny, but the most entertaining character didn't do anything this volume.

I’ll be honest, I’m so lost. Nothing’s really standing out. I don’t know if I should just drop this series or watch the anime to explain wtf has been happening.
