Join Monkey D. Luffy and his swashbuckling crew in their search for the ultimate treasure, the One Piece.

As a child, Monkey D. Luffy dreamed of becoming King of the Pirates. But his life changed when he accidentally ate the Gum-Gum Fruit, an enchanted Devil Fruit that gave him the ability to stretch like rubber. Its only drawback? He’ll never be able to swim again—a serious handicap for an aspiring sea dog! Years later, Luffy sets off on his quest to find the “One Piece,” said to be the greatest treasure in the world…

Luffy and crew regroup on the Sunny, their trusty vessel, to continue the battle against fearsome Emperor Kaido. But when their backup doesn’t show, they have to go it alone against the pirate known as “the strongest creature alive.” Things look up when they’re joined by some unexpected allies in the land of Wano, but it turns out the enemy also has some surprising (and terrifying) friends!

Eiichiro Oda (尾田栄一郎, Oda Eiichirō) is a Japanese manga artist, best known as the creator of the manga and anime One Piece.

As a child, Oda was inspired by Akira Toriyama's works and aspired to become a manga artist. He recalls that his interest in pirates was probably sparked by the popular TV animation series titled Vicky the Viking. He submitted a character named Pandaman for Yudetamago's classic wrestling manga Kinnikuman. Pandaman was not only used in a chapter of the manga but would later return as a recurring cameo character in Oda's own works.

The invasion of Onigashima to save the island of Wano from Kaido and rescue Momonosuke has begun!
Onigashima

Law seems to be getting the hang of what working with the Straw Hats is like, arguing that they should just let Luffy ignore the plan and charge the front gate, because that will be a useful diversion! But other allies are still learning:
Luffy: (Starts punching up the place because the Beast Pirates are wasting the same food that the little girl they met earlier had never gotten to taste before)
Zoro: (Makes a dramatic entrance by slicing the top off a building) “What a mess you’ve made of things! Why can’t you behave and infiltrate the group like a normal person?!”
Other allies: “Does he understand the words coming out of his mouth?!!”

Jimbei even outright comments: “This has taken a turn for the chaotic”
Yep! Buckle up, my whale-shark bro! You’re a Straw Hat now!

Part of the plan involved Kin’emon using his powers to give everyone Beast Pirate outfits and…wow is it obvious those are just fetish-wear, once our heroes (who don’t normally dress like that) are wearing these strappy leather things with demon horns!
BeastPirates
Fortunately it doesn’t last, though…not least because Sanji’s red suit with the black gloves is hands-down his best canon outfit!
Sanji

ANYWAY… There’s a lot of fun things going on with this part of the fight. There are new team-ups, including Jimbei and Robin collaborating to treat Big Mom like a bowling ball. There are people turning into dinosaurs – which is simultaneously the stupidest thing I’ve ever seen and ridiculously hype, especially since Oda actually cares about some of the paleontology details (updating the Spinosaurus tail, for example). There’s Zoro being a supportive/protective big brother to Chopper. There’s Nami refusing to say ‘Luffy will never be king of the pirates’ even to save her own life, and help coming from an unexpected source. There’s Sanji getting caught by an actual black widow lady, webs and all – because of course! - but showing the first hints of some interesting character development that I cannot WAIT to talk about next time!

Kaido
It's kinda hilarious to think of all of this from Kaido’s perspective. Like, he was just having a party, drinking with his bros. Then one of his underlings shows up with the former shogun’s kid, so he’s like “OK, string him up. We’ll execute him later – that’ll be entertaining and tie up some loose ends!” And then you find out there are all these lunatics in your palace that you’ve never seen before (plus some enemies from 20 years ago who were supposed to be dead) running around causing chaos and also your kid has gone missing and you know that, with his politics, he’s probably going to try to team up with these people. So you turn into your dragon form and bust your way up to the rooftop, hoping to draw off the strongest fighters into the open before they wreck all your stuff. And you are definitely stronger, but they just won’t stop and you don’t like to admit it but some of their hits actually hurt.
Speaking of Kaido’s kid, this is where we meet Yamato!

So as mentioned earlier, I am gonna to a full “queerness in One Piece” section on how the trans and gender-nonconforming characters are handled in this arc, but the short answer is: Really well, so far! Trans woman samurai Okiku has been being extremely badass (“The wounds this one’s katana leaves do not vanish in the afterlife. Like snow that remains into the spring, they will continue to torment your soul for eternity!”) and also got to have a reunion with her brother Izo (the one from the Whitebeard pirates who wears the geisha-like hair and makeup). Those two are in a little bit of trouble at the moment though, so I’m crossing my fingers that Bon Clay’s “queers never die!” statement continues to hold true and that they both make it out of this alive.
IzoKiku

Yamato
Now, Yamato’s gender thing is a little harder to categorize because of some of the wording/explanation choices. For now what we know for sure is: Yamato is AFAB and does not, physically, look stereotypically masculine. But he has chosen to take on the identity of Kaido’s old enemy and Momonosuke’s father, the former shogun Oden, and either because of that or just because that’s how he feels (not 100% clear) calls himself Kaido’s son. And, while some characters have a moment of confusion about that everyone respects it, even Kaido! Kaido hates the whole Oden thing - which is why he acted like Sanji’s father in putting exploding shackles on Yamato’s wrists to keep him from leaving the island – but he always calls Yamato his son and his underlings follow suit, referring to Yamato as “young master”. And of course Luffy is gonna go with it as well. Which is all pretty neat and I can’t wait to see more! (Though I wish some fans could manage to be as respectful as the goddamn villain and not call Yamato “she” just because they’re enjoying the side-boob and don't want to feel gay about it)

What an amazing conclusion to the arc. I totally loved all the characters and how it expanded on the world of One Piece! Can’t wait to see what comes next, but not sure how the next arc will be able to top this.

Another pretty good volume, this one is a bit more focused on the action itself, and the climax of the saga is fastly approaching. Some parts are a bit messy, due to the art trying to do too much, but still, solid overall.

I have many good words to say about One Piece. The greatest story ever written, and in this Omnibus Volume, the story continues it's pace towards exciting events.
