The worst cook book I have ever touched. The farthest thing from 'Ultimate' and some seriously false advertisement using that adjective to describe this book. Thankfully, this was an Xmas gift and I did purchase this book myself.
This go through this in sequence. First off, the opening remarks of a fictional Star Wars cook is fine. It's a short, 2-3 pages long introduction of an alien basically giving an elevator pitch of his character background. No issues here.
What proceeds though when it comes to narrative text, is just bad. Every single recipe in this book comes with a few paragraphs or so with a short story. These often don't even feel like Star Wars at all, and mostly come across is generic, mediocre, and very much so unapproved fanfiction style writing. I find it pretty silly as well that EVERY single recipe... even one where the author just throws some potato chips in a bowl and sprinkles some garnish on top... has a legend behind it. Just ridiculous.
And then there are the recipes themselves. They are just bad! The vast majority of this book is just drinks and appetizers, with only a very small handful of full on meals that a Man or a family could actually enjoy. Putting cucumber slices in a bowl and giving it a funny alien name is so weak. The same goes with your potato chips that you try to make overwhelmingly fancy, salads, cheese plates, etc.
I own about 5 or so cook books, everything from Weber's BBQ guide, to Steven Rinella's Meat Eater Variant, to even some non-big name folks who just did cook books and they are ten times better than this.
If you want a book about appetizers and fruity drinks that come with a poorly done sci-fi write-up, this is the book you are looking for.
If you want a real cook book that you can really make some awesome meals out of? This is not it.
Star Wars? "Ultimate?" Absolutely not. This is the farthest thing from both.
The Ultimate Cookbook is a lovingly and thoughtfully crafted guide through the culinary delights of the galaxy that is sure to excite many cooking enthusiasts. The selection of recipes is diverse and inspiring, though it occasionally reaches its limits in terms of practicality. The dishes taste great – but you have to be able to gather the ingredients first. I particularly recommend The Ultimate Cookbook for event-based cooking or when you're looking for some culinary inspiration. For a Star Wars-themed birthday, there's probably no better book! The lack of pictures and the limited identifiability of the recipes unfortunately leave some missed potential. All in all, it's a fun book that would make an excellent gift!
This is a fun cookbook for any Star Wars fan! It reads like a storybook with the main character named Chef Strono Tuggs (nicknamed Cookie), who is a chef traveling through the galaxy to find new recipes. All the recipes are grouped by the worlds they originated, and every single one has a little story that tells about the world and why the dish is popular there. At the back of the book, it has a chart that shows which ones are gluten-free (56 of them), vegetarian (53), and/or vegan (24). It really is fun to read! I wish it was grouped by dish, though, for ease of use.
Of course, I had to try some recipes in order to really give a review for this cookbook, so my family of 5 tried 3 (technically 4) recipes. I will give individual reviews for each.
*Aromatic Loralora Wings (from The Colonies planet Ketz): 3 out of 5 people in our family liked them. If you like teriyaki chicken wings, then you will most likely like them, too. It was easy to make and took us about 40 minutes since it was our 1st time making it. (It is listed as gluten-free.)
*Sand Mynock 'n' Cheese (from The Inner Rim planet Sergia): 4 out of 5 people liked this one. It was a hit! It took a little over an hour to make because we were making the crackers that go in it.
*Lira San Crackers (Wild Space and Unknown Regions): These baked cheese crackers were included in the Mac n cheese recipe, and honestly, they are really too greasy for us to eat alone, but with the Mac n cheese they were just ok.
*Lha-mi Glacier Bars (from The Mid-Rim planet Kijimi): 4 out of 5 liked this one, too! They were really good raspberry sherbert bars with a pretzel crust.
Thank you, Insight Editions, for the arc! These opinions are my own.
Jenn Fujikawa has been on my radar since I was in elementary school and looking for recipes on the Star Wars app, and it's so heartwarming to see her go from making cute dishes for Star Wars watch parties to in-universe recipes. The recipes sound delicious, and there's a good balance of entrees, snacks, desserts, and drinks--although I did prefer that the Galaxy's Edge cookbook started with a section for sauces and toppings as opposed to this one including them throughout. A lot of recipes have a heavy Asian inspiration, which is always a plus in my book. My main critique is that I really wish that every recipe had a picture included, not just because the food photography was so good but because it can be really hard to visualize a lot of the recipes since the names are using Star Wars words and not what we actually call them. Will for sure be looking for so I can both make some recipes and use it as a resource for Star Wars writing!
