I loved so many of her artistic impressions of the state of California. My daughter and I traveled up HWY 1/101 last summer, and this is a fun way to commemorate the different places we visited in California. I wish there was a hat for Chinatown! Lions, dragons, lanterns, bowl of noodles.
This may be my favorite knitting pattern book! Or at least my favorite of the past few years. So far, I have knit three of the patterns and I have a goal to knit every single pattern in the book.
I wouldn't recommend it for new knitters or knitters who have never tried colorwork or charts before. I considered myself a skilled colorwork knitter before this book, and I still felt challenged by the patterns. I have learned a lot of new skills, such as duplicate stitch and tricks for following charts, so I am happy about the complexity. But it's something to keep in mind if you are not already comfortable with knitting colorwork.
Notes about the book: Most of the patterns use at least 3, usually 4 or more colors per design. It instructs you on duplicate stitch so you always knit with only 2 colors per row, but it's still tricky. It can also make purchasing yarn more expensive, but you can get creative with stashbusting, and a lot of the patterns can use the same yarns. For example, I made the california poppies hat and then used the orange for the monarch butterfly hat so I didn't have to keep buying new colors.
I use malabrigo rios, which is a worsted weight yarn. I've used it for all three projects.
Interesting patterns with clever touches. I bought it for the poppies beanie, but I’m going to make the one for the Pacific Highway with the car button first.
