About the author

Kerstin Lillemor Ekman is a Swedish novelist.
She began her career with a string of successful detective novels (among others De tre små mästarna ("The Three Little Masters") and Dödsklockan ("The Death Clock")) but later went on to persue psychological and social themes. Among her later works are Mörker och blåbärsris ("Darkness and Blueberries"), set in northern Sweden, and Händelser vid vatten (translated as Blackwater), in which she returned to the form of the detective novel.

Ekman was elected a member of the Swedish Academy in 1978, but left the Academy in 1989, together with Lars Gyllensten and Werner Aspenström, due to the debate following death threats posed to Salman Rushdie. According to the rules of the Academy, however, she will remain a passive member for the entirety of her life.

Lite segt emellanåt men alltså detta är ju helt klart stor berättarkonst i Mobergs tradition, fast med bättre språk.

Guds barmhärtighet från 1999, är den första delen i trilogin Vargskinnet.

Hillevi, född 1860, är berättelsens huvudsakliga protagonist. Hennes mamma dör i barnsäng och hon växer upp som fosterbarn i en borgerlig familj i Uppsala. Ett gripande möte med en skicklig barnmorska får henne att utbilda sig till detsamma. På grund av kärleken till Edvard flyttar hon till en fjällby i Jämtland. Där ställs hon inför det fattiga Sverige, glesbygdskulturen, patriarkalt våld, dialektalt språk (tigandet!) och det som förstås drabbar henne hårdast; kvinnor och barns utsatthet. Armodet i början av 1900-talets första halvsekel gäller inte minst de samer som också bor i området. Undanskuffade och förtryckta kämpar de för sin rätt.

Hillevi är en litterär karaktär som är väldigt lätt att tycka om. Hon har en positiv drivkraft som vill mer än att bara bli gift. Hennes självtillit är inspirerande. I mötet med mörkret och hopplösheten i byn brottas hon med att värna sin egen person och bli en del av miljön. Vi följer henne under två decennier och hon utvecklas på ett trovärdigt och intressant sätt. Jag tycker lite extra om hur hennes lust skildras.

Romanen har tre olika spår som varvas. På samma gång som Hillevis liv som ung barnmorska pågår vid Svartvattnet rymmer Elis från sin våldsamme far. Vi får följa hur pojken med konstnärsdrömmar bekämpar kyla, hunger och tuberkulos. Det tredje spåret utgörs av Ristens blick. Det är Hillevis fosterbarn som i modern tid delar sin syn på Hillevi med flera och mera.

Guds barmhärtighet är vad jag misstänker början på en fantastisk släktkrönika. Det är en gripande berättelse där läsaren kommer nära personerna, en historisk översyn och stor litteratur som rör sig kring livets stora frågor. Vad är meningen med livet? Hur talar man kärlekens språk? Vad innebär förlåtelse? Kring detta dividerar Ekman med sin poetiska prosa, ständigt med fötterna på jorden. Den bifokala blicken håller hela tiden naturen OCH människorna i fokus, tillsammans och i samspel.

Den är inte helt lättläst dock. Berättartekniskt lite rörig med många namn. Dialekt och norska gör att jag måste googla (storsa=tjej). Men bara avsnittet med den 13-åriga flickan vars barn Hillevi hjälper att förlösa, gör mödan värd. Jag gråter sällan när jag läser böcker, men då grät jag.

Olipa tämä kirja. Jotenkin todella hieno, tunnelmat ja tunteet ja kieli olivat vaikuttavia. Samalla se oli haastava. Koskaan ei kerrottu, kuka kertoo ja missä ajassa nyt ollaan, vaan se selvisi lukemisen myötä. Kieli ei ollut myöskään helppoa, keskittyä piti. On vaikea sanoa kirjasta mitään, mutta jotain rujoa ja kaunista tässä oli, se kosketti. Elämän kuvausta rehellisesti.

God's Mercy was disappointing. I loved the first 150 pp. For me, the rest was flat and uninteresting. The development of Hillevi's inner and outer life was compelling. Then it seemed as if Ekman lost interest in her character. The added and non-linear POVs were also not compelling. When Hellevi returned to the story, she lost her vitality and original spark. I suspect that could have been intentional, showing the dissatisfaction in her life choices and the very barren and stark geography. Reading of the Lapp's culture was enlightening while violently brutal and repulsive at times. I will try another of Ekman's books.

This is probably the first book where, having read it, I am aware of a regret that I cannot read the original. I am close to thinking that you have to be Swedish to understand it properly. As the translator says in her foreword, the original contains many languages and dialects but the translation renders them all into standard English. It, however, enables me to read it at all.
I am afraid the structure of the novel did not suit me, alienated me from the characters. There is an intermittent narrator whose identity is revealed about half-way through the book, but I frankly wished that the narrator would go away. Her narration broke up the tension and drama of the first 100 pages or so. There was no resolution. I should perhaps read the other two volumes of the trilogy, but I don't think I care about the characters sufficiently. However, there are quite a few moving scenes and good descriptions in "God's Mercy". It is an uneven novel.
I bought the book on the spur of the moment when I read that it was about the Sami people. I am curious about the Sami and have read Kerstin Ekman before. I very much admire her atmospheric "Under the Snow", but "God's Mercy" is totally different, perhaps more akin to her "Blackwater" which is similarly a big book, about 400 pages. I feel that the main story gets diluted if there are so many secondary characters and relationships.
With "God's Mercy" I started making notes because of the range of characters. Most people do not just have one name but two, so they can be called by either name. And many of them are related. Often it is difficult to know who "he" or "she" is - you have to go back a bit. The whole novel is full of unfamiliar names: Hillevi (female), Tore (male), Elis (male), Aagot (female).
I did not really like the book, so it's 2.5 stars rounded up for the first 100 pages that are very good indeed.

At first, I was rather intrigued. I was very interested in Hillevi's story, who is secretly engaged to a young vicar and decides to surprise him by following him from Uppsala to his new, remote outpost in the north of Sweden. I believed that this is a story about a young midwife finding love and a purpose in the Swedish wilderness at the turn of the century. For quite some time, it was interesting to see her gaining plenty of positive and negative professional and romantic experiences. And who knew what kind of husband she is going to meet in the icy north. But once she gets hitched, her story seems to end, in the middle of the book.

Which is when the novel starts to sidestep significantly. The author adds a second character, a young man who flees his home after he got the 14-year-old maid pregnant and has all sorts of adventures on the way. (We never get to hear about the maid again, and I am not sure what happens to the child, it's not the one that Hillevi adopts. Or is it? Do I remember this correctly???). Anyway, then the story leaps forward in time, Hillevi is now middle-aged and staidly married, and we get a third narrative thread of her adopted daughter.

The landscape descriptions are beautiful, the language can be very cumbersome (a clumsy translation perhaps?), but the narrative evokes a very convincing sense of place and time. I think I would have enjoyed the novel more if it had not been so disjointed. Also, to appreciate the story more fully, the reader requires a particularly Scandinavian subtext that I lack. There is a lot of talk between the characters regarding the tension between the Swedish, Norwegian and Sami population of the early 20th century, and I could not always relate.

This is the first volume of the Wolfskin trilogy.

Risten, the character the reader meets on the novel's first page, remains the first person narrator in all three volumes. The trilogy begins in 1916 and ends around the beginning of the twenty-first century and follows the destinies of the characters in God's Mercy and their descendants.

This is a tough read due to the way the book is set out, as there is a lot of jumping around in time and place. Full concentration is needed to remember from whose POV the narrative is coming from at any one time. This is also a tough read due to the content - it's a book written by a woman for women but chick-lit it ain't.

The descriptions of the northern cold and dark landscape of Jämtland in the early 20th century are well written. There are certain scenes that are stylistically impressive, and style is something that I cannot say that Ekman lacks. However, overall, and especially towards the end, I found myself bored most of the time. My mind went elsewhere.

The beginning promised an appealing atmosphere that didn’t turn into much else beyond an appealing atmosphere, and the feeling of the atmosphere sort of disappeared eventually, without leaving us with some kind of captivating substance.

Still a three, because the the style is by an experienced author that knows how to write.

Jeg fik lyst til at læse Kerstin Ekman efter jeg havde set Hændelser ved vand i TV. Guds Barmhjertighed foregår i samme Nordsverige men tidligere 1920erne og frem til ca 1940erne). Man følger samfundet og de forskellige grupper der bor i det gennem Hillevi og hendes plejedatter. En tredje gren af historien fortælles af drengen Elis, som flygter fra det lille samfund. Bogen er skrevet i et meget rigt sprog, det anbefales at læse langsomt! Jeg læste lidt for hurtigt, med det resultat at jeg tit blev forvirret over det store persongalleri. Utrolig fine natur- og menneskeskildringer. Har lyst til at læse den igen faktisk.

Men så bra! Hade jättesvårt att lägga ned den. Inte en full femma då jag inte alls förstod poängen med Elis/Elias berättelse. Det var väl en typ av sidoberättelse till huvudberättelsen, men den kändes tafatt och jag blev otålig i väntan på att de delarna skulle ta slut så jag kunde gå tillbaka till Trond och Hillevis liv. Hans sidoberättelse hade varit bättre om det på något sätt kunde kopplas tillbaka till Hillevi kanske? Men så hamnade vi i nazityskland? Men utöver det, helt otrolig bok. Så vackra skildringar och Kerstin ja hon har ju ett sätt med orden!

I haven't ready many books recently that I wanted to ditch real life and just read, but this was one of them. I was a bit confused at first, as there are three narrators, and I didn't realize that, but once that was sorted, I enjoyed every minute of the book. I'd give it a thumbs up for character development, description of the beautiful landscape of Sweden and plot, as well as the translation from the Swedish.

It took about 3/5 of this book for me to start enjoying it and to finally figure out who was speaking in the chapters. Was it Hillevi, Kristin, or Elis? Each of them had at least two names, as did all the characters in this book. The other two volumes in this trilogy are not available through my library system but frankly I'm not too put out about it.

Ich hab dieses Buch ganz überrascht in eine Gebrauchtbuchhandlung in Indonesian gefunden. Ein deutsches Buch findet man doch nie hier, aber da war es. Hab nichts von der Autorin gewusst oder den Titel auch nie gehört aber es sieht interessant aus, und deswegen kaufte ich das plötzlich. Sie können es schon verstehen, wie unvorbereitet ich war dafür, worum es geht.

Das ist ein ganz verwirrendes Buch zu lesen, find ich, denn es erst auf Norwegisch geschrieben wurde, im Teil in Schweden stattgefunden wird und auf Deutsch übersetzt wurde. Na ja, das ist ziemlich kompliziert zu verfolgen, aber die Handlung selbst ist ehrlich gesagt ganz einfach zu verstehen. Es fängt erst im Jahr 1916 an, aber dauert bis zu dem 1939 lang. Der Chronik ist eigentlich ein bisschen hin und her, also manchmal schwer zu verfolgen aber gewissermaßen so geht's.

Die Geschichte selbst finde ich ziemlich interessant, obwohl die Charakterisierung durcheinander ist. Ich verstehe nicht, warum manchmal es von einer dritten Person erzählt ist, und manchmal von einem "Ich" erläutert wird. Es gibt eine Inkonsistenz, wie man die Geschichte verstehen kann. Das kann vielleicht nur ich sein, aber das stört mich sehr. Hillevi gefällt mir doch. Ich finde sie sehr stark in der Mentalität. Oftmals weißt sie was sie will und versucht's zu greifen. Sie weißt auch schon was sie für richtig und falsch hält, und wird nie von den anderen gezwungen was anders zu glauben. Als eine Hauptcharakter ist Hillevi wirklich eine schöne. Würde ich auch für Kristin/Risten sagen—obwohl es geht eine lange Weile bis man weißt, wer das überhaupt ist. Andererseits, gibt es Elis, der eine verwirrende Geschichte hat, die ich bis zum Ende gar nicht verstehen kann. Ich weiß auch nicht warum wir seine Geschichte doch wissen sollte. Die andere Charakter fällt mir gar nicht auf—sogar Halvorsen oder Edvard Nolin.

Überall finde ich die Geschichte selbst zwar okay. Nichts besonderes aber auch nicht irgendwie schlecht oder unangenehm. Die letzte Kapitel allein konnte schon viel abgekürzt, finde ich. Was verwirrendes auch ist die Zeitlinie. Es gibt fast kein Kennzeichen, das beweist wann was passiert ist. Erst waren wir doch beim 1916, aber irgendwie plötzlich finden wir uns schon im 1923, und irgendwie wurden wir gesprungen zum Jahr 1939. Das macht mir ziemlich schwer, die Szenen sich vorzustellen—und das brauchen die Leser doch!

Na ja, all meine Meinung hängt auch von meinen Sprachkenntnisse. Es kann sein, alles macht besseren Sinn, wenn Sie alle Wörtern doch verstehen—bei mir ist das ja nicht. Aber, wenn Sie eine Ausländer sind wie ich, können Sie vielleicht zustimmen. Aber egal, das Buch macht mir doch Spaß!

Už dávno se mi nestalo, že jsem si u nějaké knížky musela úpřimně a otevřeně přiznat, že mě skutečně nebavila. Jsem ten typ čtenáře, který čte hodně žánrů a líbí se mu hodně, ale Vlčí kůži vám určitě nebudu doporučovat. Sama jsem se musela nutit, abych ji dočetla, protože jsem věřila, že na konci bude nějaké zajímavé vyvrcholení celého příběhu a já pochopím, proč se tam všechno dělo, ale nestalo se tomu tak a tak je pro mě táto knížka jedno veliké zklamání. Přitom měla tak dobrou anotaci a lákavou obálku. Přitáhla mě hlavně prostředím severu a Laponska, kde se odehrává a já příběhu ze severu mám oblíbené a ráda se tam na stránkach knih vydávám.
Jde o příběh porodní asistentky, která se rozhodla odcestovat na daleký sever, protože tam preložili faráře s kterým udržuje tajný milenecký vztah a doufá, že si jí časem vezme. Ale drsné prostředí nepřeje krehkým povahám a ne každý to tam zvládne. Sledujeme vícerodejových linek a víceropostav, prolíná se nám minulost se současností a my si postupne vytváříme obrázek drsného prostředí a postav, které dokážou prožít v izolaci od okolitého světa a vytvoří si svůj vlastný svět.
Jak říkám, anotace působila skvěle, ale to čtení už tak skvělé nebylo. Byla jsem zmatená z postav, většinu času jsem nevěděla kdo je kdo, hlavně při střídaní dějových linek minulosti a součastnosti. Děj běžel pomalu, byl nudný a i když se tam něco dělo, tak jsem měla pocit, že pořád stojím na jednom místě. Nedokázala jsem se začíst, zžít se s postavami a příběh mě vůbec nevtáhl, dočetla jsem to sice do konce a tak vám s klidným srdcem můžu říct, že tohle mě fakt nebavilo a fakt vám to nemůžu doporučit. Tak snad budu mít příště u severských příběhů šťastnější ruku.

Ekmanin Herran armo on Sudentalja -sarjan aloitusjärkäle. Kirja vie Ruotsin syrjäseutujen metsiin, välillä Norjaan ja saamelaisten poronhoitoalueille sata vuotta sitten. Raja itsenäistyneeseen Norjaan on edelleen huokoinen ja elämä on kovaa. Ekman kuvaa sivistyksen etulinjan tuloa liki villi-ihmisten luo hieman kirkon, mutta enemmänkin kätilö Hillevin kautta. Kätilö joutuu todistamaan ihmisten viettien tuotoksia ja pelastamaan uutta elämää liki mahdottomissa oloissa. Tämän Ekman tekee taitavasti ja luulenpa että aika uskottavasti myös historiallisesti.

Yksi kaltoin kohdeltu poika pakenee pahoinpitelyjään ja tulee pelastetuksi norjalaiseen tuberkuloosihoitolaan. Tämä Elis osoittautuu taiteellisesti lahjakkaaksi ja etenee Oslon (Kristianian) kautta Berliiniin asti ennen toista maailmansotaa. En oikein syttynyt tälle Eliksen rinnakkaistarinalle. Ehkäpä jatko-osissa selviää miten Elis palaa pahan juurille?

Hillevin seurustelut ja ison kuusen alta alkanut avioituminen paikallisen kauppiaan kanssa ovat minusta kirjan parasta ydintä. Hillevi on tolkun nainen, mutta koville ottaa hänelläkin selviytyminen itsensä ja omien lasten kanssa.

Kirjan lukuisissa henkilöissä oli vaikea pysyä jäljillä, rönsyjä on turhan paljon. Mutta Ekmanin kerronta on varmaotteista ja kun ei voi sanoa katu-uskottavaa, sanotaan metsäuskottavaa.

Haunting, a bit arduous, almost dreary, but Ekman's style is full of vitality. She's a wildly ingenious writer and stylist. The main characters are difficult to love. Hillevi can be an elitist prig, which occasionally surfaces in a moralistic tone at large, but there's not much rhetoric in the end. It's very realistic. The characters are incredibly human, and, like real people, frequently irritating. The first act is the best, and not all parts are equally interesting. The narrator is one of the least interesting characters in the book, and she begins to take a greater part of the story as it goes on, but I never felt I knew her, or liked her very much. Lots of darkness, like a Swedish winter, but lots of tenderness too.

Op de een of andere manier doet dit boek me heel erg denken aan Anjet Daanjes boek Het lied van ooievaar en dromedaris. Misschien door de plastische beschrijvingen van dood, geboorte (de hoofdpersoon is vroedvrouw) en religie/folklore? Heel erg goed geschreven, gruwelijk en liefdevol tegelijk. Hoewel het zich afspeelt aan het begin van de 20ste eeuw is het enorm realistisch beschreven. Het universum van Svartvattnet wat Ekmans vaste plek lijkt te zijn smaakt naar meer!

Vilket författarskap! Boken är så bra. Intressant story, inga långrandiga utvikningar kring naturen som i Katrineholm-serien. Man kommer så nära karaktärerna så att man nästan är där. Inläsaren höjde upplevelsen än mer.
