The Getaway Home: Discovering Your Home Away from Home

Rate this book
Who doesn't dream of the perfect getaway place? Dale Mulfinger, author of The Cabin, addresses the increasing popularity of recreational homes-both new and remodeled-in The Getaway Home. Written for active adults and families who place a high premium on the enjoyment of nature, this book is organized according to four settings: woods and wilderness, mountains, water sites, and desert. Readers are invited into 24 remarkable homes from across the country, all designed for getting away from it all. With over 300 color photos and drawings, they can discover how the design requirements are dictated by activities, environment, and site. For those who pine for a cottage on the water or a compound in the woods, The Getaway Home helps fulfill dreams of the ultimate escape.

I wish there had been more interior photos of the homes in the book. The text was well written and the section a the start of the book outlining desirable factors and how people generally think of getaway homes was insightful

With house projects underway, we are always looking for ideas to include into our projects. When the book shows up as a $5 item in a salvage grocery, we know that we have scored. The architects and their clients are working with budgets that have at least an additional two zeros more than ours. However, in order to find the right feature for our use, we keep on looking.

The portrayal of details, colors, and materials are grand. The cost of the homes are an entirely different matter. However, these type of books accumulate on our shelves, we refer back to them for ideas . . . . . and on occasion, we strike gold with an idea that fits.

By the way, it is always fun to look. It is also fun to look at the photos and try to figure out what was excluded (for one reason or another).

A great 'escape' book. I've always loved imagining details I'd love to include in a dream home or cabin 'someday' and this has some great ideas! Now I just need to track down an old granary building for our indoor basketball court with a mountain vista and renovate an old farmhouse or old forestry station in the pines with lots of nice nooks, crannies, a loft and window seats!

A beautiful and inspiring book from Taunton Press. Each house includes thumbnail house plans, many pictures of the house, and in the back, full information about the architect. Mulfinger is an architect from Minnesota, and certainly knows how to find interesting examples nationwide.
