The Black & Decker Complete Guide to Wiring has been America's best-selling consumer wiring book for more than a decade, with previous editions selling more than 1 million copies. This fifth edition has been updated to comply with 2011-2013 National Electrical Codes. It also includes all-new information on solar electricity, grounding an upgraded electrical service system, emergency back-up electrical power and much more. A bonus computer/smartphone link takes you to 60 minutes of how-to video featuring common home wiring projects.
Black & Decker Corporation is an American manufacturer of power tools, accessories, hardware, home improvement products and technology based fastening systems headquartered in Towson, Maryland.
Black + Decker Complete Guide to Wiring (7th ed.) (Quarto Publishing 2018) (621.31924). This is an expertly written “how to” guide for those who are as inept as I when it comes to household repairs. I was unable to solve my wiring problems after reading this, but that's not Black & Decker's fault. That's why I went to law school instead of trade school. My rating: 7/10, finished 7/31/19.
this book makes it easy to work on home projects around the house. Emphasizes safety for all projects and the illustrations are excellent. Chapters include an overview of electricity and wiring safety; wire, cable, and conduits; boxes and panels; switches; and receptacles—to foolproof circuit maps for 30 common wiring set-ups and step-by-step walkthroughs of every essential home wiring and electrical repair project, this book teaches you everything you need to know. A good index makes it easy to use. This is the 6th edition of the book. I received a copy of this ARC in exchange for a fair and honest review.
Good book for expanding your wiring expertise or refreshing your electrical knowledge. However, I do not recommend following one of their advised three-wire methods for GFCI kitchen outlets. Their method would require you to use a GFCI outlet for every receptacle, extra cost, and less room in the boxes because of the extra wires. I learned the hard way. Just do the two home runs back to the breaker box like most electricians would likely advise.
Note: this is based on information from my local electrical inspector (VA state), who says that GFCI's will not work on shared neutral wiring unless there is a GFCI at every box.
After reading this, I would feel comfortable tackling planning a new circuit in our home, basic fixes and new installations of fixtures, wiring a small structure.
A couple minor mistakes, but great pictures and easily supplemented by online resources.
This is a real page turner. It's an amazing story and I can't put it down. Or, it's helping me wire my house so I don't burn it down. Either way, I like this book.
excellent diagrams, explanations, and the various wiring project walkthroughs are thorough and complete. A very good read for the novice that doesn't want to electrocute themself or start a fire.
