Baptimergent: Baptist Stories from the Emergent Frontier

Rate this book
Emergent Baptists are those who believe there is more to God, Jesus, and God’s kingdom than modern Christianity and its denominational categories have been able to define. Emergent Baptists believe it is incumbent upon us to participate in—and write—the narrative for our time and place. Like generations before us, we hope to take what our forefathers and mothers gave us and fashion something from it that is our own. This book contains some of our first efforts at doing so.

If you are versed in the theology, polity, praxis, and politics of the Emerging Church movement, you are not likely to find anything new in this collection of essays. But if you are surprised to hear that even Baptists can adopt the Emergent model, then by all means read this book.

The primary purpose of the book seems to be to remind both those inside and outside the Baptist world that our movement can still be a "big tent" affair, with room for Emergents as well as Seeker-model and traditional evangelical congregations and clergy. If it weren't for the overall quality of the articles and the winsomeness of their authors, the "us, too!" tone of the book would be a complete turnoff. But there are personal stories and clear thinking here to carry the reader into relationship with the authors and make those stories and thoughts special.
