This is a nice book with lots of colorful photos! I do feel like it could have been done better in some ways, though. For example, on the reptiles page, there is a large photo of a flying gecko.. sounds interesting, right? Yet I can't find any information about the animal I want to know about other than the photo and the name, and some general information about reptiles. I guess it can serve as a springboard for finding out information online about the particular animals that are pictured. My kids weren't super interested in the book (toddler and Pre-K), so maybe I'll try again when they are older.

We have not read the entire thing, but, my daughter has had this book a couple years now and enjoyed bringing it to me to read select sections of the book. It has a decent selection of animal species and little facts about them. I think it's a bit of a stretch to call it an encyclopedia simply because of the way it is arranged.
It really isn't the sort of book that you just pick up and read all the way through. My daughter has enjoyed it a lot more hopping around in the book to the topics she prefers at the time.

My son 'read' this book often before he started school. Somehow, he managed to retain quite a bit of useful information from his 'reading'.

I've had this since I was 4 and it is a good introduction and easy to read through. It is a little basic though so it is not good as a constant reference book.

I still sometimes have those nights where sleep seems near impossible, and so I turn to a book.
This is one of the books I most turn to.

I have always loved animals. Always. I'm fascinated by them -- I want to know more, I want to be that kid who knows at least one fact about every little creature on this earth. I want to be able to speak for hours about African cats, invertebrates, and fish, never faltering. I want to be that weird kid who is animal obsessed, with a mind that never drifts away from her curiosity.
And this book only fed my curiosity even more!

I learned about strange animals I'd never even heard of. Patterns I couldn't even imagine. Grotesque mites and bugs that live on everything in this planet. I was 7 when I got this book, and since then my age has doubled, along with the love for this book.
It's full of beautiful photographs, quick and easy-to-understand facts, and questions to test your animal-crazy self. It's what any kid like I was could ever want.

So, if you have an animal freak in your home, I beg you to let them read this book! Sure, they'll pester you for years about animal facts you wouldn't care about, but the boredome ends here.

The visuals in the DK text are numerous, factual, and indeed helpful to learning about the animals, though there is a tendency to only focus on the image of the animals as opposed to the entire animal’s lifestyle. There is a lot of white space surrounding each image and it is clearly meant for a young audience. This resource is an excellent one for beginners and those who are just looking for a general overview of the world of animals, though it wouldn’t be helpful for those looking for something more helpful than just the general or for those trying to write a report for class. The source is an adequate introduction to the animals listed, though there isn’t a lot of further exploration into the topics and their surrounding facts. The book reads more like a list of fun facts over the animals than a strong examination of the topics.
