Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar, conocido como el Cid Campeador, fue un caballero medieval castellano que utilizó la guerra como medio para mejorar su situación económica, proteger a su familia y conseguir el ascenso social. Las leyendas de este libro narran cómo el personaje se hace a sí mismo y su lucha por la supervivencia. Rodrigo está lejos del idealismo de otros héroes é es un personaje creíble, el primero de la literatura europea que conjuga heroísmo y realismo, y que no ofrece solo una cara, sino que se muestra en toda su complejidad.
