After a horrible accident a year ago, Roy is left to care for his disabled mother. A job he does without thought of reward. Unfortunately, he is also very lonely. Man’s first contact is made and it’s Roy who has been chosen. But why him? Roy would rather spend his nights dreaming about Hamish then having to accept a request of help from strange beings from another planet. But that’s just what’s happened. Roy must do something for the aliens, something that will mean confronting his father at his work. What exactly does his Dad do for a living that’s so important to these aliens? As far as Roy is concerned his father is a nobody, just like him. When the night is through, Roy’s life will never be the same. But something more important than that, he may get his mother back and his dream man in the process…if only he can talk to his father.

I live in Melbourne, Victoria, in the land of Oz. According to my own Teenage mis-adventures, I am just an ordinary guy with a penis which likes to get me into trouble…a lot. I’ve seduced trees, copulated with watermelons, and had nice old ladies pick ants off my naked body. Yep, that’s me. Mark Alders. All round nice guy and with my brain firmly in my pants, exactly where it belongs!

So what about the here and now? Well, I am a mild, mannered post office worker by day. I have a mortgage to pay and a partner named Lee who I have been with for *cough* twenty one years *cough.* At night, my muse, the bitch, forces me into bondage and makes me sit at my computer and type out stories about men having sex with each other…all the time…over and over…in varying degrees of WTF, too!

I mean, I have stories out there about alien spiders needing humans to nourish their eggs, red-skinned aliens whose balls glow when they are sexually excited, beings who cock dock with their victims to drain them of their life force, and a young man who discovers puberty is just the start of his problems as he comes into ‘magolescence’ on his eighteenth birthday and his penis turns into a snake!

Ah, the life of a story teller. The fun never ends.

This is a short read. I loved the characters. Roy was a realistic character. He had so much pressure on him for his age. His response to that seemed pretty typical. The story wasn't as in depth as some would wish but I thought that was because it was so short. I still thought it was a well thought out story and enjoyed it.

First off, I had never heard of "the diamond ring effect" and actually found myself stopping to research it in the middle of reading the story. FYI, wiki has a very pretty picture.

Ok, so, about the story now.

Roy is lonely, depressed and stuck at home caring for his ill mother. The relationship with his father is practically non-existant and he longs for a guy he doesn't think even knows he exists.

Then appear some lost aliens that need his help and in return they actually help him.

This is a short novella and I just felt more story needed to be told. Particularly the relationship between Roy and his father and Roy and his love interest.

I must be in an anti-sex mood today or maybe I just don't appreciate Mark Alder's sex scenes when a giant spider isn't involved? *ponders*

Anyhow, this was fun but the sex at the end was just sort of awkward and the timing felt wrong and possibly the knowledge that they were getting it on while his parents were right there and had to know what they were doing, just freaked me out a little too much.

I love Mark Alders brain - he really has one of the best imaginations in the industry.

This book is short but just what I was in the mood for. I wanted something short but quirky. I wanted something silly and fun. This book covered all accounts.
