Gardening is now the favorite leisure pastime in America. Homeowners are realizing the health benefits derived from gardening and the increase in their home's property value. This book contains easy-to-use advice on the top landscape plant choices. It also recommends specific varieties, and provides advice on how to plant, how to grow and how to care for the best plants. The Mid Atlantic Gardeners Guide is devoted to offering the top landscape plants for four key areas of the Mid Atlantic Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, and WashingtonD.C.
You are better off seeing what your state and local department of natural resources or master gardeners program recommends for planting in your zone and area. Literally, you can find that information online. Did not like how this book has Japanese Knotweed as a recommendation!! It is a highly invasion, noxious perennial weed! Having it on or near your land can lower property values. Lost me after that - like wtf?
Books was good in that it identified plants found in Mid-Atlantic region, and did denote native plants. However, it is very outdated and misleading. There are plants, grasses and shrubs in here that many if not all states now classify as highly invasive and should be avoided at all costs. As such, it’s a good book for identifying what you may already have, but beyond that there are newer and better resources to be found in print and online.
So I own and love my "Indiana Gardener's Guide" and wished I had something like that for Maryland...as it turns out, there is something EXACTLY like it for Maryland! Yea! I am so glad to get some good plant recommendations for the area. My only thing I was a bit disappointed with is that the author isn't as big on native plants as I am. But it was great to get to know some of the workhorses for this warmer area than I'm used to.
This book contains information for choosing annuals, bulbs, conifers, ground covers, herbs, ornamental grasses, perennials, roses, shrubs, trees, vines, and water plants that will grow well in the midatlantic region.
