I haven't read the first five books in this series (though I intend to after really enjoying this one) but I managed to follow the story fairly well. Probably a few things would have meant more if I'd had the context needed, but I still really liked this book. I had expected something that wouldn't feel out of place with the Animal Ark books I adored as a kid, but this turned out to be much more complex and involved.
I'm curious to see what happens next, but I need to start from the beginning, especially so I can be a bit more clear about the magic system in the books.

Considering I didn't really have a clue what was going on, this was very fun and readable.

My six year old daughter continues to love these books. I'm a little sad to see them end. Its nice to have something that is fun and exciting for her and not mindless for me to read out loud to her. Great easy reads for bedtime. It takes us about two or three nights to finish one, but the story is satisfying and appropriately difficult, yet solutions are not impossible. I love the growth of the little girl in the story and there's nothing about her liking boys or even noticing them, just awareness of herself, finding friendship, magic, pets, love and support from family and extended family. It's refreshing to read something that includes all of these things, is well written and doesn't tangle everything up with crushes and other things my six year old shouldn't really be reading yet. It can be hard to find things for an advanced reader that is still appropriate for her age level. These fit the bill perfectly.

A thrilling adventure! I love that the author doesn't follow the belief that evil characters should be destroyed-merely changed and driven away. Such a beautiful ending! I can't wait the read the next book!!!!
