Kate began reading romance in 1979 when she picked up a copy of Kathleen Woodiwiss's Ashes in the Wind. She read the book from cover to cover in one very long night and was immediately hooked on the genre.

The next morning, she was standing at the door to her local Waldenbooks and when they opened, she hurried inside and asked for everything else written by Woodiwiss. At the same time, she found wonderful books by Rosemary Rogers, Laurie McBain, and Jennifer Blake.

Nearly 10 years later, while working as an advertising copywriter, Kate decided to try writing a romance of her own. After a history of interesting jobs in teaching, retailing, advertising, and nonprofit work, she was determined to add romance author to that list.

After numerous failed attempts over three years, Kate decided to forget writing historical romance and turned to category romance. Six months later, her first story, A Vagabond Heart, was finished. A year later, Harlequin bought the book after Kate won the national 1992 Harlequin Temptation contest. The book was published in 1993 as Indecent Exposure.

Her dream of adding romance writer to her resume came true and in December of 1993 she turned off her alarm clock, shredded her pantyhose, and became a full-time writer.

Since then, Kate has written numerous books for Temptation, Weddings by DeWilde, Harlequin anthologies, Love and Laughter, and Duets. Her new Duet, Three Babies and a Bargain (July 2000) will be her 24th project for Harlequin and All Through the Night (August 2000), a Temptation Blaze, will mark her 25th.

Kate lives in southeastern Wisconsin in a cozy little house in a picturesque village. Two cats also live with her—Tansing, a grumpy Himalayan, and Tibriz, a tortie Persian mix that she rescued from an animal shelter. She enjoys gardening, golf, reading, and romantic movies.

Utterly charming and breathtakingly sweet. I was hesitant about finishing it because I really didn't want it to end. I loved just about everything about it. 5 stars with a heart on top!

Fiery fantasy ignites, complements of Kate Hoffmann and her newest release Into the Night.

When a chance encounter in an elevator brings Tess Robertson and Derek Nolan together, lives change and passions ignite. Tess is ready to accept her life as fiance of Jeffrey Beale, whose family owns the thoroughbred horse farm where she lives and works. Though she is not in love with Jeffrey, marriage to him promises a future of financial stability, something Tess has lacked her entire life. On the evening of what she supposes to be her engagement party, Tess meets the gorgeous and charismatic Derek.

Derek's family owns a multitude of hotels and resorts, his job is to fly around the world checking in and making sure that each establishment is working to top potential. A glitzy life of travel and glamor – what could be better? It is when Tess and Derek become trapped within the elevator of one such hotel, that both their lives veer in an entirely different direction than they ever each thought possible and Derek discovers just how his live could be better.

When Derek suggests a fantasy-filled weekend on a tropical, lush and seductive island, level-headed and conservative Tess astonishes herself with an enthusiastic “yes”. Flying off in his private jet, the couple hold no expectations and prepare for a “no strings attached” weekend, filled of bliss and unadulterated fantasy. However, when heartstrings begin to tug, will the “no strings” remain true? Can fantasy become real life or will Tess be unable to follow her heart?

Into the Night is a delicious and sensual romp of the ultimate fantasy. From a chance encounter in an elevator, to flying off into the night to a hot and steamy private island, Kate Hoffmann brings to life the world of temptation and the most erotic of dreams. Derek Nolan is the yummiest of male characters with his rugged and sexually charged handsomeness, playfulness, kindness and generosity. Not to mention the fact that with Derek, money is never an option. His desire to care for and nurture Tess is awe-inspiring, the romantic scenes that he sets up for her are unforgettable. Derek will stop at nothing to make Tess feel pampered and cherished – no matter how much she resists.

Tess has never had an easy life and after a shocking revelation made during her supposed engagement party, she decides that a fantasy weekend is just what she needs. While I liked Tess and felt that she was very down-to-earth, I didn't embrace her character as much as Derek's. Her continuous denial of Derek's true feelings became a bit tedious and to the point I wanted to slap her. However, this resistance adds to the story and provides a bit of a protagonistic twist.

While reading Into the Night, I felt as though I was thrown into the scenes, right along with Tess and Derek. Ms. Hoffmann's descriptions were incredible and I could almost feel the island breezes and smell the exotic scents of the island. Not to mention the visuals of breezy clothes, lush vegetation, a romantic bed on the beach and the steamy encounters between Derek and Tess. The romantic scenes between Derek and Tess were very sensual and sizzling, however they are written in a very tasteful and non-offending way. The chemistry between the two steamed off the pages and the story itself was very well written and made for an incredibly fun read.

Into the Night is the perfect book to curl up with and lose oneself in.

Tess believes that her boyfriend of 4 years is about to propose at a party and she's feeling kind of hesitant about going. On the way, she gets stuck in an elevator with Derek, hotel mogul and millionaire who offers to take her to his Caribbean island, no expectations and no strings attached - just to get away. With just a little bit of thinking, she goes. The attraction between them is strong and intense and there's some insta-connection between them. They have a steamy affair on the island and get to know each other a bit, but to Tess, this is all a fantasy and reality looms. Derek isn't quite ready to give her up, but isn't very successful at getting her to listen.

So this was just okay. I had major problems with Tess as a person, seeing how she left her boyfriend of 4 years (believing he was expecting her) to rush off to a private island with a complete stranger. She kisses the guy several times but tells herself, it's not infidelity because they haven't had sex. I don't see it that way at all. Especially as she honestly did consider having her fun with Derek and then going back to marry her boyfriend, presumably without ever telling him... She also turned out to be a pretty selfish person overall, hemming and hawing and keeping Derek, who loves her desperately, in suspense about any possible future they might have. Would it have been too much for her to say, "I love you and I like the idea of a future with you, but I've got some things to work out first, let's just take our time getting to know each other for a bit?" (Because they really needed to get to know each other better). Her dealing with emotional baggage did not require kicking him out of her life completely while she dealt with it. Ugh.

On the other hand, I liked Derek. Yes, I worried about his morals when he was perfectly willing to sleep with a woman he knew was engaged. I also worried about whether he could actually love her when he was completely okay with her 180 about sleeping with him and never asked what prompted it. But he redeemed himself when he monologued that he didn't want to possess her, he only wanted to be allowed to exist in her orbit. How sweet.

A very sweet story. It the story every girl dreams of. A wealthy, sexy man sweeps you off your feet, and then he flies you off to his own private island. The only question: where can I find one of my own?

This was very good. I was caught up in Tess and Derek's romance from the very beginning. I did get a little frustrated with Tess' hesitance at the end, but it was basically very enjoyable.

This was definitely a book based on fantasies and it was sort of unrealistic but I still liked it a lot. I actually cried, ha-ha. But I really wish that there could have been a better ending.
