Clare is subsequently dispatched on another Awakened Being hunt, paired only with Ophelia, #4 in the Organization. Ophelia's homicidal tendencies nearly cost Raki his life, but Clare manages to flee as Ophelia and the arrived Awakened Being begin to fight. Ophelia easily dispatches the Awakened Being and proceeds to pursue Clare. Sending Raki fleeing in the opposite direction, Clare begins to fight Ophelia, but is hopelessly outmatched. She loses an arm, and is about to be killed when a hooded figure arrives. Ophelia attacks, but is soon overwhelmed, and the figure reveals herself to be Illena. Illena takes Clare to her home and teachers her the Quick Sword technique. During this period, Ophelia, distraught at her loss, awakens. In order to allow Clare to properly use the technique, Illena cuts off her remaining arm for Clare to use. Shortly after Clare leaves, Illena is confronted by Rafaela, the Organization's #5, who had been sent to kill her. Clare soon encounters the Awakened Ophelia.

His most recent work, Claymore, has been running in the magazine since 2001.
"I think Teresa was happy, even if it was only briefly, for the time you were together. [ ...] Teresa was the solitary type. She was strong willed. Everyone around her respected her, yet feared her. You loved her as she was, and she accepted it. For Teresa, it was a time of peace, full of human feeling... Live, Clare. You staying alive is the only proof that Teresa ever existed."
Ophelia was a sadistic claymore and in the middle of the battle against the Awakened, she butchered Clare’s right arm.
She’s got no sympathy for weaklings or humans for all that matters, so Clare decides to run away while she can, and tells Raki to wait for her until they meet again. Unfortunately, Ophelia is unbeatable and she almost kills Clare in the process that is until the long forgotten Ilena uses her sword once again, so they could buy some time.
Now, this volume is real important because we still have to know a lot of things about Claymores and slowly but surely, we’ve seen that the organization they work and live for is not precisely the best. They really don’t care about their assets and barely treat them with any respect. Once you’re out there on the field, you’re on your own.
We also get to see a heartbreaking moment between Ilena and Clare, because they remember what it was like to be around Teresa, the latter still grieving about her, but somehow finding the courage to standing up, at least, so she can avenge Teresa.
This was an intense volume as Clare is fighting Ophelia and she is after her. First Ophelia attacks them and her and she dodges barely and the way she defeats the monster is something and then we have Clare dodging Ophelia and meeting Ilena who survived and she teaches her Quick Sword and the way they go about it is so awesome and then gets her right hand. Ophelia becomes fully awakened in a mad desire for revenge. And what follows next is quite emotional and turbulent. One gets executed and while one fights the newly awakened yona.
I am loving the designs and surprise cameos/comebacks and how Clare is attached to the former 5 now and her battle with Ophelia is getting intense and the design for the villain is so good like full snake form and all that and the art is so clean and crisp that it reads so much better and everything. Its a very quick read and is just a blast to go through.

The writing just got a lot better The backstories, the characters'personality and experiences and how they feel were almost perfect The only negative I can say is about the artificial nonexistant chemistry between clare and her new romantic partner.
World: The art is great, the sense of motion as I’ve said is amazing. The new creature designs are getting better and better. The world building is solid, it calls back to the past which is a nice little touch and moves the story forward with the new top 5.
Story: The pacing is breakneck and at times the speed makes the story a bit too fast for the small emotions and the time needed to catch your breath lacking but it’s still pretty good. The speed also gives the story a lack of depth which this book really needs especially for the world building and the emotions that were so good in the first couple of books (the Teresa arc was the best). The ideas of the Awakening and the difference with Clare and the other three is still a bit iffy for me and not clearly defined but oh well. The scene with Raki and Clare kissing is kinda wrong as I thought the relationship was a sibling one so far...that was an odd choice. The end result of the arc with the new Awakened looked amazing and the who does not love a good training montage.
Characters: Clare is getting better and better as a character but her powers still need a bit of a clarification, and this is when the book needs to slow down a bit to at least do a little info dumping to give Clare and the world more depth. Her relationship with Raki was a bit odd this time around as the choice that Yagi made was kinda...odd. The Ophelia character is a bit odd and a bit out of place in the organisation that is supposed to pride itself in order and the Claymores following them, but she does make a good villain. Ilena was an interesting call back and her comments were warranted and emotionally resonating.
This book needs to slow down a bit or start to give us more concrete ideas behind the organisation and the powers cause it’s piling on a lot of shakey rules for the Yoma powers recently and it needs to get it in order.
Different one here in the storyline. Always as good and the change, even if it's a bit weird, bring something to the series and is welcome. Still enjoy and love it a lot!
4/5 Clare and Raki split up so Clare can draw Ophelia away. We are later reunited with Ilena who was there when Teresa was killed and Priscilla awakened years ago. This is followed by a couple of a training chapters. Ending with Ilena leaving Clare with a parting gift.
Fast action, great art, bloody story. Still going strong.
Clare at the end of Volume 7 on the cover of volume 7. Showing off her gift.
4.5! This volume was really good, and honestly the way the plot is going is very interesting and entertaining! This was such a quick read. I hope more layers to the story get added and flushed out throughout the series.
After the high point with the four already awakened Claymores, the series goes back into the normal pacing, which is quite a natural thing to happen. Still going strong, though.
Re-reading it, Ilena's sacrifice feels a lot more powerful - Clare carrying the legacy of both Teresa and Ilena is quite interesting. However, the time runs too fast (or so it seems, I'm not sure how much time passes), and Clare's training seems to be nigh-instantaneous. Perhaps it would've been a good place to actually dive deeper, and allow us discover a bit more of the universe.
We pick back up with Clare and Raki escaping both an Awaken Being and a murderous Claymore named Ophelia, and then running into Irene, one of the Claymores assigned to kill Theresa. New developments about how the Claymore gain powers and the ways they heal are made, and the duality of Clare as both weakness and strongest plays out again. The themes are interesting as mentors becoming part of you is often literalized in this series as well as using your differences as strengths. It's dark fantasy manga, but it is well developed and not nearly as focused on pure evil as many other in the genre.
Claymore is a manga about Yoma who pretend to be human in order to kill and eat the humans. The Claymore are the hybrid of the two stronger faster but still human with the ability to slay the Yoma which they do for a price. They travel from village to village slaying Yoma with nothing but the sword on their back using the Yoma abilities but slowly turning into a monster that they hunt. When the time comes a Claymore will send a black card to another claymore to be slain before the Yoma takes over and so they die as a human.
In the seventh installment Clare has been forced to flee the fight with the awakened single digit because of Ophelia a deadly claymore. Ophelia has no issues breaking the rules and killing humans or fellow claymores. Fleeing into the woods Clare decides that they need to split up if they are going to survive Ophelia’s rage. After another battle with Ophelia when things look bleak a stranger shows up to save Clare a match for Ophelia with her quick sword. How will Clare deal with the loss of her sword arm? What happened to Ophelia?
I like Clare she’s a sword carrying slayer who isn’t afraid to die charging in risking her life. She may not survive every encounter but that doesn’t stop her from doing what has to be done protecting the humans. While most Claymore’s wouldn’t allow Raki to tag along she accepts him and maybe it’s partly because they are kindred but he needs her and she him to keep her humanity. I find Clare to be an intriguing character and can’t wait to see more about her back story as well as what’s going to happen next. We are given a little back story on Clare which introduces us to Teresa a Claymore whose life was changed by Clare.
I’ve seen all of the episodes on Netflix a few years ago actually binge watched them over a long weekend. I love the concept for the Claymore the hybrids created using parts from the monsters that they have been created to fight. While I am familiar with the story it’s interesting to see it play out as I read it. The art is great it gives me just enough to create the story in my head as I read each detailed page. This is only my 2nd manga so I don’t have a lot to go on but so far I’m super exited to read the series. Claymore is a fast paced loaded with action series that is captivating right from the start hard to put down till the last page. Can’t wait to start the next one in the series they just keep getting better. I feel like a voracious Reader because I can’t get enough
This is the seventh book in the Claymore series. I continue to really really enjoy this action packed dark fantasy manga series. Previous to reading the series I watched the anime, I really enjoyed that as well. So far the manga series is following anime series pretty well (I know the manga came first)...at least as far as I can remember..it’s been awhile since I’ve watched the anime.
This book picks up right where the last one left off. Clare and Raki have fled both the Awakened Being and Ophelia. Clare is hoping that the battle with the Awakened Being will delay Ophelia long enough that Clare can get Raki to safety. However, Ophelia has realized that Clare has Awakened and will not be deterred from hunting Clare down once and for all.
A lot of very cool things happen in this installment. There is of course, tons of awesome fighting scenes throughout and they are so well done. We also meet Ilena who has perfected the Quicksword technique and is determined to help Clare out by teaching it to her.
In the course of all of this we learn a lot of secrets about Clare. We finally start to learn and understand why Clare is so weak, yet in some ways much more powerful than even the single digit Claymore. Clare is an anomaly among the Claymore and it was fascinating to finally figure out why.
Overall this series has been a wonderful blend of action, creepy monsters, fascinating plot, and amazing characters. The illustration is phenomenal and never confusing or hard to follow. I am dying to know what happens next. This is a very good manga series, one of the best I have ever read. I highly recommend it to fans of dark fantasy action-packed manga.
Four to five stars for Claymore in general because ... SO MUCH! I guess individual volumes range from three to five, but at the moment I can't properly rate them individually because I ploughed through the manga re-reading a lot and just inhaling the newer volumes. I couldn't stop. Super intriguing dystopia, mysteries over mysteries without getting less interesting, extremely creative body horror (ranging from beautifully other to horribly disgusting), carving your own path (sometimes, most often, with a sword) and meaningful personal relationships that do not centre around romance at all. Oh, yeah, and 95% of the characters are female.
The corporation arouses mistrust among a group of them, this distrust and these secrets excites me curiosity about how a woman turns into a Claymore. I really want to know ...
A lot of great moments and plot twists in this volume.
Clare and Raki part ways with an emotional farewell in order to evade Ophelia.
Clare is pushed to the brink by Ophelia. She allows her arm to be severed in an attempt to fake her death and at first it seems the ploy worked. But then Ophelia emerges from the shadows and spears the arm before shredding it. I really like how the author isn’t afraid to put Clare into extreme peril like this, and I like when characters have false victories and need to redouble their efforts. It shows the author is working hard to deliver maximum suspense and not cutting corners.
Ophelia tortures Clare for a while longer and just when she is about to die, a mysterious stranger rescues her, easily defeating Ophelia. And it turns out to be Ilena, a figure from Clare’s past, one of the claymores sent to execute Theresa.
Ilena teaches clare the quick sword technique in a training interlude. Ilena reveals that she lost an arm trying to kill Priscilla, the yoma responsible for Teresa’s death. Priscilla is far beyond the capabilities of even Ilena. (Building anticipation for the inevitable confrontation with Clare)
Ilena explains how she was deeply moved by the friendship between Clare and Theresa, something unheard of among the claymores. And she desires that Teresa lives on through Clare. So she sacrifices her remaining arm to give clare a chance to carry on Teresa’s legacy. This is a powerful emotional moment handled perfectly.
Meanwhile Ophelia has awakened, fueled by traumatic memories of the murder of her brother at the hands of the “horned demon.”
Clare leaves the secluded valley of Ilena.
Shortly after that, Ilena is ambushed by Rafaela, who has been sent to execute her.
At the same time, Clare is ambushed by the awakened Ophelia. Ophelia doesn’t even realize she has awakened, despite a new appetite for guts, until she sees her own reflection in the waters of a lake.
Clare is able to defeat her with the new abilities learned from Ilena. Before executing Ophelia, Clare promises her she will get revenge on the horned demon, who, it turns out, is Priscilla. Clare affirms her commitment to do this for the first time, for the sake of Teresa and Ilena, both of whose flesh she now carries within her.
Brilliant writing in this volume, as the author keeps finding a way to escalate the suspense and drama, weaving an intricate plot with no excess. Claymore never lets up or pulls its punches.

This volume was really good, as it builds on a lot of things that have been developed in previous volumes. Whereas before it’s generally been Claymores dismembering and then killing Yoma, now there’s a fair bit of Claymores cutting each other’s limbs off, and this creates an interesting dynamic, especially when it turns out Clare can reattach limbs but not regenerate them. Ophelia manages to become even more monstrous in this volume, eventually becoming an Awakened Being herself, and it seems like there’s a pattern emerging of Claymores awakening because they become obsessed with hunting down and killing each other. It makes me wonder if that’s part of why Clare is able to stop herself from fully turning into a monster - because she’s usually acting to protect Raki and other humans.
The designs of the Awakened Beings continue to be excellent, and the combats against them are great. This volume also brings back an unexpected character, with Quick Sword Ilena showing up to get Clare out of a jam and even training her in the quick sword technique. It’s cool to have the extended flashback to Clare’s origins continue to be relevant to the plot, and I also find the revelation that Clare ate Teresa and thus is only a quarter Yoma to make sense and explain some things. I’m curious to see what Clare will be like now that Ilena gave her an arm, which is a somewhat more literal thing than usual when Claymores can reattach their own limbs. Overall, I feel like the plot is continuing to build and get more complex and I’m looking forward to seeing what happens next. Though the reappearance of Ilena also makes me wish I could see more of that generation of Claymores, and I hope that more characters from that time will show up in the story.
Today's post is on Claymore volume 7: Fit for Battle by Norihiro Yagi. It is the seventh in the long running Claymore series, you need to have read the six volumes to understand the story. It is 185 pages long and is published by Shonen Jump Advanced. The cover has Clare from the end of the volume on it looking at the reader. The intended reader is someone who likes dark plots, high action, and strong female characters. There is mild foul language, no sexuality, and lots of violence in this book. The story is told from third person close of the main character. There Be Spoilers Ahead.
From the back of the book- Fearing that she's no match for the deadly Claymore named Ophelia, Clare spirits her companion Raki away to relative safety. But no matter how far they run they won't be able to escape Ophelia's heightened senses. And now that Ophelia knows that Clare has awakened, she will not rest until she has destroyed Clare.
Review- I had some real anxiety for Clare in this volume. Ophelia has lost her mind and only wants to kill Clare no matter what. But even in her insanity, she is still an excellent fighter and she comes very close to killing Clare. But Clare is saved by an unlikely source and the course of the story changes. One of Claymores who has sent after Teresa finds Clare and Ophelia and saves Clare. Ophelia does have character growth in this volume because by the end of it I felt sorry for her as she becomes the monster that she hates so much. But Clare still has a fight in front of her if she is going to stop Ophelia and save herself.
I give this volume a Five out of Five stars. I get nothing for my review and I bought this manga with my own money.
