Even if I was born in Czechoslovakia, I never really read, or seen anything by Werich (he was less popular in Slovakia and his work did not have much presence in our TV post-split up).
But through cultural osmosis, I gathered that he as a reputation of a kind, intellectual-clown... seeing all the injustice and suffering of the world, yet trying to alleviate us with a warm-hearted joke.
This was the first book I read from him, and while I think my idea of his work was largely correct, I was a bit disappointed by... the quality of it.
All the observations/kind-hearted criticism felt a bit vapid, surface-level, obvious... The stories that are the vehicle for his observations and witticism were often flimsy, meandering (and the best simply re-telling of existing fairy tales/stories)....
I expected more... I'll read Fimfarum at some point, but don't feel terribly hopeful.
I'll also never admit this in public :)
