The Hollywood in Muskoka series is set in Muskoka, Ontario—summer playground of the filthy rich and famous. The novels have a couple of special features—a playlist featuring Canadian singers/songwriters, and a special dog character.
Madelle began her engineering career in the early 80s in Yellowknife, the capital of Canada’s Northwest Territories. Her adventures resulted in her small press-published debut novel Diamond Lust, which was reissued in January 2015 as Diamond Hunter.
Her short story, The Next Big Thing, is available as a free download to new subscribers of her occasional blog at www.MadelleMorgan.com
This book was my first experience with this author. I found the setting of a tundra diamond drilling camp only accessible by plane to be very unique. The heroine, Petra, was a geologist with a little more spunk than caution. She tended to jump in with both feet only to discover the consequences later. Seth is a RCMP cop undercover as a pilot whose route goes back and forth to the diamond mind. When a chance encounter puts Petra in his path, Seth decides to enlist her help as a cover to get him deeper into the mining operation. Petra reluctantly agrees not realizing how much danger she will be bringing on herself. Seth finds himself constantly trying to keep the impetuous Petra out of trouble while keeping her close to himself. As the two become closer and more involved, it becomes harder for Seth to separate his job and his feelings for Petra.
The story moved along quickly and had plenty of action and chemistry. I enjoyed the details related to the diamond mining and the various plot twists and turns. It was well written and and interesting.
I received an ARC from Net Galley in exchange for review.
After reading "the Next Big Thing" which had been offered for $0 on Kindle, I was ready to buy anything from this author and was pleased to see this offering in the romantic suspense arena. It's a really tight plot, the romance is prominent but not forced. Seth is a strong hero, but not an all-out arrogant Alpha which you see so often nowadays. Both main characters were relate-able and flawed enough to be realistic. There was back story that wasn't over done and the story was woven together very artfully. There was suspense, but not over the top violence that you all see all too often lately in this genre. And I was afraid for a couple of pages we were going to get into a "they're not together because they're not communicating how they feel" rut but the author artfully avoided that as well. This book was perfect pitch for me. Great "afternoon escape" with characters who seemed like people you might actually meet and care about.
I hope we'll be seeing a lot more great reads from Ms. Morgan.
This is a well written romantic suspense novel that captured my interest from the first page and kept me engaged until the very last page.
If you like romantic suspense, this is the book for you. Petra, a geologist, works in the extreme Canadian north at a diamond mine. Seth, and undercover officer, is posing as a pilot and wants to be pretend to be Petra's boyfriend as a way to stay at the mine camp. There is a problem at the mine and he responsible for solving the mystery. But Petra, who doesn't date, finds the close quarters unsettling.
One thing I really appreciated about this story was the way the environment played such a large role that it was almost a character on its own. It was interesting to get a glimpse into how an open mine works.
I really enjoyed this book and it is perfect for summer reading.
This romantic suspense novel is very well written and has it all – complex well-developed main characters with many interesting secondary characters, a good suspense plot with several threads that keeps you on the edge of your seat, fast-paced action scenes, and steamy romance. A bonus is the author's knowledge and experience in mining which is exploited in the novel making the novel even more engaging. Madelle is at ease moving from hot romance scenes to thrilling realistic adventure scenes, keeping suspense high throughout. I highly recommend this to anyone who likes a well-written tale of greed, betrayal, murder, lust and love.
Full disclosure: This is my debut novel, a romantic suspense about a beautiful geologist who stumbles into a nest of murderous diamond smugglers at a remote mine in Canada's far north. Diamond Lust is no longer available.
It was originally published by Ellora's Cave in 2010. I regained the rights, changed the cover and republished it (e-book and print) as DIAMOND HUNTER in January, 2015.
