Pecan Gap: A Jake Somers Novel

Rate this book
The dim light of dawn peeked through the sides of the shutters across the room from Jake's bed. After using his left hand to push back the covers he slowly moved to a sitting position. Carefully he leaned forward to rest his head in his hands as he waited for the pain to subside enough so that he could stand. When it came to the pain, this morning was no different than most. And like most mornings he cursed the driver of the car that ran the stop light and ploughed into the side of the police car that he was driving.
The driver of the other car, a female mother of two, had been unscathed as had the two infants securely strapped in their car seats in the rear of the car. As she drove the woman had been talking by phone to her sister and paying little attention to anything else. She had been ticketed for the accident and her insurance rates had probably gone up but that was a small price to pay for the damage she had done to Jake.  His knee had been shattered and the joint around the artificial replacement now ached as if someone had plunged a hot knife into his leg. He knew that if he could just endure the pain enough to stand up and then start moving the pain would eventually subside. It wouldn't stop completely - it never did - but it would subside enough so that he could get on with the business of the day.
The physical damage caused by the collision had driven Jake from the police force. He could no longer operate a police vehicle and having been a veteran police detective he couldn't stand the monotony of a paper pushing desk job so, with the encouragement of his friends, family and fellow workers, he opened his own P.I. agency. Looking back he has to admit that even though he misses the force the change hasn't been all bad.

I enjoyed getting lost in this book to another place. It swallows you in from the beginning. Jake is a great ex-cop and PI. All the characters pop and keep your attention. From Jake's girlfriend to believe it not, his car is almost like a character. The part I like most about this book is Castle does not use any profanity or violence. It really is a great read for anyone who likes mysteries.
