The kids and I have had the honor of reviewing The Case of the Missing Mountain by Kim Jones. The Case of the Missing Mountain is a colorful 80 page activity book. The kids join Rangers Jack and Jen as they work to solve 8 mystery's to see what happened to Mount. St. Helens. You solve the mystery's by doing crossword puzzles, codes, word finds, word scrambles and other activities. Once the kids solve all the mystery's, they will then become an Official Mystery Ranger.
We really liked the book a lot. My oldest daughter who is 13, enjoyed working on the puzzles and word scrambles and the different activities that were in the book. However, it was a little difficult for my 6 and 5 year old children. They did enjoy the hands on activities when we got to make a mess though. And you will make a mess!
I definitely recommend this book for the elementary to middle school age kids.
Did you know that part of Mount St. Helens went missing several years ago?
In The Case of the Missing Mountain by Kim Jones, Rangers Jack and Jen take Future Mystery Rangers on a sleuthing adventure to uncover many mind-blowing clues and facts along the way to discovering the scientific secrets and creative truths involved in the 1980 explosion of Mount St. Helens. Future Mystery Rangers are even taken on a discovery trip of how the region of Mount St. Helens has developed since its 1980 eruption.
Jones creatively includes seven primary mysteries to solve followed by an eighth bonus mystery at the end of the book. Each mystery helps the reader unearth facts about what has happened to Mount St. Helens by using various fun forms of decoding, word searches, mazes, and even experiments and projects that drive home the lessons in a fun way.
Ultimately she guides the reader in understanding how scientific changes to the landscape and environment can happen much faster than scientists used to think, thereby helping the reader understand that believing in the fact that God created the earth as the Bible describes is not such a crazy thing to believe after all. Scientific proof exists in many documented and studied occurrences - not the least of which is Mount St. Helens.
Finally, in the bonus mystery...well, I'll let you discover that little nugget for yourself! :o)
My five-year-old son, Official Mystery Ranger Buster, gives this exciting sleuthing adventure a really BIG thumbs up!!!
Honestly, the book is probably geared more for a little bit older age-range of children, as I had to "help" him with a large amount of the sleuthing work. However, he thoroughly enjoyed the adventure and still retains a vast amount of knowledge about Mount St. Helens that most five-year-olds do not have. Additionally, some of his favorite activities in the book included decoding, word searches, mazes, and he especially LOVED creating our own volcanoes in the back yard and watching the different ways they exploded!!!
Official Mystery Ranger Buster and I highly recommend The Case of the Missing Mountain!!!

"The Case of the Missing Mountain" is a full-color educational activity book for kids around ages 7-11. The reader solves the word scrambles, word finds, mazes, codes, and crossword puzzles to complete the clues and fill in the sentences. During this process, they learn about the eruption on Mount St. Helens in 1980 and related events that happened afterward. Though most of the answers were pretty obvious, there isn't an answer key in the book. However, the answer key is available on the book's webpage (which is given in the book).
There were also 12 "real life" activities that kids can do (with adult help). Usually these activities further illustrated the principles talked about in that section. For example, when talking about the eruption, the activity was to make a classic vinegar-and-baking-soda powered "volcano" of your own. The materials needed for most of the activities are fairly common items which you probably already have around your home. Messy activities included a warning that they were messy, which was nice. The instructions were easy to follow.
The book included full-color pictures from the Mount St. Helen area (before and after the eruption) as well as illustrations of the ideas being taught.
The mysteries that needed to be solved were: #1 how the mountain lost it's top (about the first part of the eruption); #2 what damage was done by the melted ice and snow off the mountain (the later part of the eruption); #3 how a 60-foot cliff was formed; #4 what damage the mudslides caused (includes information on the formation of the Little Grand Canyon, Engineer's Canyon, and the North Fork Toutle River System); #5 Spirit Lake and the Floating Forest (and how this relates to Yellowstone National Park's "Specimen Ridge"); #6 how the canyons were carved out quickly; #7 how quickly the plants grew back and the animals returned; #8 how what we saw at Mount St. Helens can help us better understand what happened during and after Noah's Flood.
Overall, this book is a fun way for Christian children to learn more about the interesting things that happened during and after the Mount St. Helens eruption.
I received this book as a review copy from the publisher.
The Case of the Missing Mountain by Kim Jones is a full-color educational activity book for kids ages 7-11. The reader solves the word scrambles, word finds, mazes, codes, and crossword puzzles to complete the clues and fill in the sentences. The reader learns about the eruption on Mount St. Helens in 1980 and related events that happened afterward by doing the activities. There is not an answer key in this book but if you go to Kim's author blog the answers are there. This is a book that requires an adult to help the child with the activities. One of the activities is building a vinegar-baking powder volcano. This is just one of the fun activities that a child can do to learn more about volcanoes. The activities can be messy and the author has kindly labeled the activity with a WARNING sign if it is going to be very messy. The warning is great so that the parent can prepare in advance for better cleanup. There are wonderful, full color illustrations of Mount Saint Helens, rock formations and more. The mysteries that need to be solved are: 1. how the mountain lost it's top (about the first part of the eruption), 2. what damage was done by the melted ice and snow off the mountain (the later part of the eruption), 3. how a 60-foot cliff was formed, 4. what damage the mudslides caused (includes information on the formation of the Little Grand Canyon, Engineer's Canyon, and the North Fork Toutle River System), 5. Spirit Lake and the Floating Forest, 6. how the canyons were carved out quickly, 7. how quickly the plants grew back and the animals returned, 8. how what we saw at Mount St. Helens can help us better understand what happened during and after Noah's Flood. My fifth grade son loved this book and all the activities that are included. His most favorite part though was constructing a volcano and watching it "blow." This is a great asset when studying volcanoes or simply to incorporate into a study of Science. As a parent, I loved that my child was learning about volcanoes from a christian/biblical viewpoint! So, come join Mystery Rangers Jack and Jen as together we learn about God's creation! Don't miss this 5 star book!
I have a great interest in fossils and creation. Kim's book is an excellent fun narrative adventure that connects the eruption of Mt St Helen in 1980 with the formations of the earth during the Noah Flood in the Bible. Every page has a new clue and adventure to solve with scientific information presented in a fun and simple way. As an adult I enjoyed each one. I learned some things I didn't know. This is an excellent read for schools, camps, Sunday schools, scouts, and many other groups and individuals! Great gift for the Grandkids! The book has interesting and fun experiments that most anyone will have the materials for in the average home. There are plenty of caution signs for safety and messiness. You can go to the author’s blog to find an Answer Key, but if you read, you can find most all the answers right in the book! It is a high gloss paperback the size and quality of a magazine, but a lot heavier weight. The photos are very good and the illustrations are first class! Each page keeps you wanting to find the next clue! The pages keep your attention to the very end. Don’t miss the last page of Volcano jokes and requirements to get your own Rangers Badge!
