This is a Fantasy/Sci-fi/Adventure story about an alien disguised as a human and visiting this planet. He has an invisible ship hidden in the clouds and can time-travel. He is hunting down monsters that killed his father, but finds a nice girl instead. There are castles, pirates, mobsters, natives, cowboys, hippies, nerds, ninjas, a blue tiger-dragon, a hovercraft, and a hoverboard... Time to fly away.
interesting piece of outsider fiction, though it's really more a movie script, and not in the way, say, Ready Player One is a movie script, but that this book really is just a manuscript published as a book. i actually have no idea how this came into my possession nor when, and there's no information within besides "COPYRIGHT - 2011". it was just on my shelf.
the story follows a gary-stu alien traveling through time on earth in search of demons. he doesnt actually know where they are or when they are and has very little means of finding them, so he just sort of aimlessly wanders around hoping he'll run into some. along his journey he inadvertently solves human troubles using his gary-stu powers and stoner wisdom. he also picks up a college girl from the 20th century and she does nothing except look pretty, sit on his lap, get kidnapped and drink coffee. well, she occasionally quotes "jesus words" from the heart. she also doesnt seem to care about or miss anyone from her time, parents or friends or whoever.
gary-stu eventually blunders his way into a group of demons terrorizing feudal japan halfway through the narrative, and this is his only encounter with them. from here on out he has a couple more inane adventures with his girlfriend and then returns to his home planet to substitute gym and art class. his girlfriend takes up skateboarding. they snowboard, go to parties, host barbecues, and drive an RV. gary-stu learns to fly and has dreams where he fights more demons but also has his ass kicked by a toddler for some reason. yes, it was obvious early on Visitors was pure wish fulfillment but it initially did have a "plot". the author just gave up on it and decided the rest of the novel would be slice-of-life. it crawls to the finish line closing on a final "jesus word". everyone is happy on his home planet called Peaceful (not a joke), the end.
the novel or script if you prefer also has moments where specific song choices are namedropped and the back of the book contains a glossary of all songs used. very helpful. it is mostly boomer rock, but i find it bizarre that weezer and blink 182 join the mix, too. i guess it makes sense an eclectic guy writes eclectic fiction. it's a shame we likely won't ever see gary-stu and his perfect girl on the big screen, but pop on a well mixed spotify playlist and it's like you're really there.
gary also has a pet tiger that turns into an invisible bus. just figured it was worth mentioning
