I don’t know that I would call Kellan’s Dragons a romance. At least not at this point. But it is the first book in the “Dragon Wars” series, and all of the elements for a potential romance are there, so it will be interesting to see how the series develops.

Kellan is a girl with some pretty intense psionic abilities. And, just in case you are like me and have no idea what psionics are, the term refers to using the mind to create paranormal phenomena (thanks Wikipedia!). Kellan has had this ability her entire life (think Roald Dahl’s Matilda on steroids). She is roped into government service so that she can psionically link to a dragon. The dragons are being used in a war against opposing governments, and it has been discovered that a bond between psion and dragon makes them better fighters.

Kellan happens to be the strongest psion seen by the government in about 200 years. Naturally, they choose to pair her with a pretty intense dragon, but Jericho, another dragon, has other plans. Jericho is one of the oldest in the Compound, and though he isn’t terribly keen on the idea, he links with Kellan. Kellan, because of her intense mental abilities, can tell that Jericho is keeping something from her. While you do find out by the end of the book what that something is, it really wouldn’t do for me to tell you, now would it?

Bottom line: this book is quite clearly the first in the series. It spends a lot of time creating a backstory that will inevitably come into play down the line. Like the pilot episode of most television shows, things were a little slow to get started, but towards the end, I was hooked. I don’t know if I can really explain why without spoiling you for the plot twist and the setup of the romance, but suffice it to say that I didn’t see it coming, even after reading the book blurb. It was well done, and I’m really hoping that I’ll get the chance to review the other books in the series when they become available.

I picked up this book in an effort to support the publishing house that put out my Skyline Series. I picked this book out of many without over-thinking the decision, and I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised.

Kellan is a strong, extremely gifted girl that stands above the rest of the psions in her school. As you might imagine from your high-school days, this makes her the target for snarky comments and aggressive jealousy. And while she tries to hold up the ol' chin, it weighs her down, pushing her into outcast status.

Not helping the situation is her dragon. Having lost a bunch of psions (kind of like ESP) before her, he doesn't want to get attached. He's mean and brutish, and kind of a dick, actually. This makes her segregation not only depressing, but draining.

I enjoyed this struggle. I enjoyed the gruff, alpha male type stance in the dragon, especially when you start seeing through the cracks to the fear and uncertainty beneath. The story moves quickly and efficiently, not wasting too much time on trivial details, making us like Kellan, and root for Jericho, the dragon, to get his scaly head out of his ass. It is a short read, and by the end, you wish she'd pushed the end line out farther so you could continue on the journey.

There is also a graceful and soft romance brewing in the pages. You totally want her to hook up with one or two of the characters, but being YA, all the author did was tease. And actually, that was fine. I have an imagination, and she gave me enough to get excited about.

I liked this one.

I'm not counting this as one of my 100 because technically it's a re-read even though it just came out. Antonia and I have been writing buddies for 7 almost 8 years, so I got to read this as it was being written and help her with some plot points. This is the first novel in a YA series, short yes but very very good. I've loved it since she first got the idea.

Kellan has never had anyone. As an extremely strong psion most other psions don't want anything to do with her. She's strong, fiesty but still wants to be loved by someone that will be there for her. Jericho - well he's not happy about his new link but stangely I always found his surliness endearing. The boy who wanted but was really afraid what he wanted would be taken away.

So no, not one of my 100 but I did read the final release version today. Antonia has a way of writing dragons that just sweeps you in and makes you honestly believe that somewhere out in the real world their ARE dragons.

Kellan's Dragons was a quick read and a thoroughly enjoyable one.

I have to be honest and say that the author Antonia Tiranth is one of my editors and I was curious to see her writing. I was delighted. The story was very alternate world and didn't need any kinf of info dump for the reader. It was easy to understand what was happening and from the beginning, the story moved at a quick pace while giving enough information to keep the reader completely in the story.

I'm going to go get the next book (this is a series, right?).

Absolutely great addition to dragon lore. I believe Antonia has a winner series here. The plot twists were both surprising and believable. It takes a great imagination to pull that off.

The first person tone of Kellan is spot-on for her situation. Who wouldn't be cranky to wake up with a splitting headache and find out you're linked to an even crankier dragon?

Great fun. I look forward to the sequels.

I think this novella could have been great, but it felt like I was thrown into the middle and not given anything to understand. Maybe the author did this so we would be on the same wavelength as the main character?
