The Pirate's Guide to Freeport: A City Setting for Fantasy Roleplaying

Rate this book
Freeport is Green Ronin's signature city setting and has been home to thousands of RPG campaigns since its launch in 2000. Classic fantasy elements, cruel-hearted pirates and Lovecraftian horror come together in the rum-fueled metropolis known as the City of Adventure. Now a new era is beginning. The Pirate's Guide to Freeport is the definitive new sourcebook for the City of Adventure, set 5 years after the events of the original Freeport trilogy. This is a pure setting book, focusing entirely on the people, places, politics, and perils of Freeport and containing no game statistics of any kind. The Pirate's Guide to Freeport can thus be used with any fantasy RPG and Green Ronin will be providing companion products for popular systems like True20 and d20.

Out of all the RPG resources I've ever picked up, this one had the most useful stuff. I'm giving it five stars even taking into account that there's a fair amount of horror in it, and horror's not my thing. This book is chock full of characters, situations, and places that you can use in your campaign. One thing buyers should know: Freeport is a city *with* pirates, not a city *of* pirates. If you want something completely lawless, you need to look elsewhere, maybe a history of Tortuga or something. I haven't found it yet. In that respect, the book disappointed me, and I'm *still* giving it five stars. It was the best value for what I wanted that I've found yet.

This is an excellent systemless setting that takes a bit of Lankhmar, Sanctuary, and Port Royal and mixes them with a dash of Lovecraftian horror. The result is a setting that clearly shows its Dungeons & Dragons roots, but which should be easily adaptable to any fantasy RPG. Obviously, the further you get from the tropes of D&D, the more work you'll have to do, but there are some really good ideas in here.

The only part I really didn't care for was the description of the rest of the world outside of Freeport, but that only takes up a few pages and can easily be replaced.

Great setting book that could easily fit into any game. Lots of great characters, locations, hooks, all the stuff a "lived in" world needs.
