Treeland Pack Tales #1

A Taste of Scarlet

Rate this book
A rare Omega wolf with the gift of healing, Scarlet underwent her first shift to werewolf form while held captive by a pack of rogue Alphas. The abuse shattered her connection with her inner bitch and left her with a severe Alpha-phobia. A broken wolf link put her out of the mating game. But determined to serve a pack in need of her healing, she searches for the legendary werewolf whisperer on the chance he can work the miracle she needs.

Once he roamed North America guiding the broken wolves back to wholeness, but Daniel nearly lost his humanity the last time he tracked a rogue. Escaping from the whisperer business, he spent months in his true werewolf form. Now he's the lone wolf sheriff in sleepy Cedar Grove. He likes peace and quiet in his territory, same as any good law officer, and the new redhead in town is pure trouble.

Two seconds after they meet, she's disturbing the hell out of his peace. She's a pack princess and he's not interested in a pack sanctioned mating. Been there, done that, and still paying through the nose for the mistake. Leaving her alone is the right choice, but he can't deny that she smells delicious.

A Taste of Scarlet is one hot wicked wolf tale, which I enjoyed. This is a loving BDSM romance book, not your typical hard core BDSM, so this one was right up my alley. I enjoyed the characters and the sex was pure hot. This book has fun, romance, sadness and excitement. At around 151 pages it won’t take long to read this hot wolf tale. I recommend this to any erotic paranormal reader that likes a hot male dominating.

Tease
“Let me go.” She squirmed in his unbreakable hold.
Much as he enjoyed the squirming, both wolfie boy and he knew she needed mastering—his. He pressed harder, subduing the rebellion. “Negotiations are over.”
“There were negotiations? I missed them.”
More sass? He bit back a grin of admiration. He inhaled, catching a note of smoky anger topping her wild berry fragrance. No tang of fear marred the complex blend.
Angry beat the hell out of scared.

Just pages into it and I am LOVING it. She has me totally hooked! I'm impressed. These two have personality in spades and some searing chemistry. Wowzers. I love how he gets mushy that she cooked for him and it's a cut up apple with Nuttella. He's thinking, "she could serve me sawdust" and he'd be ga ga. She meanwhile is used to being scared spitless of alphas and no one being able to touch her because of her past, and yet her wolf lets him rub all over her and isn't scared but lusting. Something she's never experienced before.

UPDATE: 1/2 way in and I just can't stop. The idea here is fabulous. Why did no one else think of this? Basically the Alpha Wolf Sheriff is also known as a wolf whisperer. Like the dogwhisperer. When male wolves get trapped in wolf state he goes and finds them and helps them back to humanity. There are so few female wolves, it just doesn't happen to them.

Scarlet was kidnapped with her mother at 15. she was raped and beaten and watched her mother be murdered. Now she's lost the connection to her wolf and wants the whisperer to help her.

Daniel, the sheriff, doesn't want to do the whisperer thing again. He failed last time and quit. At the first of the book they do a lot of attracted, action, pushaway and deny stuff. He comes up with reasons why he needs to stay away (she's too good for him, he's too old..) But when he learns she is an omega and could be a lifeline for the son of his heart (not blood), whose entering a dangerous time with puberty. He knows he must try. He just doesn't count on bonding with her!! Now not only does his son need her, but he/his wolf does as well.

with it all on the line, and him bonding to her, he must stay in control and use the oportunity of a conneciton betweeen them in the bedroom to get her wolf to trust him. He has to play DOM. And it is written so smoothly that it isn't hokey, but makes such perfect sense. He is using all that Dommy psychology to get her trust and compliance.

UPDATE:
here is the TRR review I posted:)
A seriously scorching new wolfie tale that will leave you howling for more. I just loved this new erotic paranormal romance novella. Fellow smutty wolf lovers are going to be waggin' their tails too.

What an ingenious idea for a plot. Daniel, lone wolf and sheriff of small town, Cedar Grove, is out of the healing business. At one time, fellow pack members across North America referred to him as the Wolf Whisperer. Daniel had the ability to coax male wolves that were trapped in wolf form back into their human form. The one time he failed would be his last… or so he thought.

There aren't many female wolves. Most of the time, males must mate with humans, making female pure blood wolves a cherished part of their community. And even rarer was the Omega female. With the power to help heal and help transitioning adolescent wolves, Omegas were nothing less than lifesavers.

Scarlet was born a pure blood Omega wolf. Royalty in the pack's eyes. At fifteen, she and her mother were kidnapped by rogue alphas, raped, and beaten. Scarlet was forced to witness the murder of her mother. Never again would her wolf come out to play. Scarlet was trapped in human form, unable to access the Omega the pack needed so badly.

She's come seeking the Wolf Whisperer.

The two of them are pure magic. I loved the part where she cuts up an apple and serves it to him with Nutella, and he is swooning because she ‘cooked' for him. He admits to himself, "She could serve sawdust and I'd love it." Love, love, love it!

The tension and angst are out of this world. I was dying for them to just hook up already (um…maybe two pages into it. I'm not patient) and he just keeps coming up with reasons to deny the chemistry--age, her royal status, he's not good enough… but in the end chemistry and his big ol' heart prevailed. Well, it might have been a big ol' something else, too.

And that's where I really, really loved this book. Ms Lorraine used the concepts found in BDSM Dominance and Submission to aid Daniel in reaching Scarlet's wolf. It was pure genius. If you read BDSM, you will know that it is primarily psychological. It is the giving up of control and discovering something better in its place. The whole logic and process he used actually made sense. It seemed…well… logical that it would work. (And at the same time, we got a bunch of really steamy, wild wolf lovin' to read) Don't let the inclusion of BDSM scare you off. It isn't a BDSM book at its core. Nothing particularly uncomfortable to read. He doesn't hurt her, she isn't scared. It is more of a mental game to get past the human fears to the wolfie inside. It just worked for me.

The only negative I have is that it is too doggone short. It was just so delicious I wanted MORE! Thank heavens Ms. Lorraine is working on a new installment, and she promises it will be longer. It's kinda like chocolate. A little is just a tease. Her characters have such potential for depth, and she has such a wonderful voice, we just need more. Count on me to keep my eyes peeled for her next book about Hunter. Enjoy!

Werewolves, werewolves, oh where have you been!?!

It's a been a while since I've read anything PNR and this author is our February Author of the Month for my FB book club. This is an honest review.

First from the cover or and the title, I had no idea this was a were-book. Once I figured it out, ooh there were tingles and jingles all over. There heroine is Scarlet and the hero is Daniel. They are two broken people simply trying to figure it out. Oh and there's hot sex with minor BDSM, and a hot alpha male who is scrumptious, and hot sex. There was one part where I wanted to be a werewolf in heat. Please can I do that, too? It was so good I had to read it twice! I think I might have drooled just a bit, too.

The story progression was very good, I felt it was very well written, and the characters were very believable. I love a strong female character who doesn't loose herself simply because she finds herself addicted to the dick.

I give this 4.5 stars, only because I wish it were longer so I could really sink my teeth in and get lost in the story. I guess that's what the next books in the series are for, right?

This was a very nice basically two-hander werewolf whisperer story.

Scarlet, has not changed into a werewolf since her teens when she was abducted and abused by rogue werewolves. She is an Omega and sets out to find the legendary werewolf whisperer. She finds him in the grocery aisle.

Sheriff Daniel is the Whisperer, though he hasn't done that in a long time becuase he blames himself that he couldn't save an innocent family from a rogue.

This is a longish novella and well worth reading.

A Taste of Scarlet is not your average werewolf tale. Scarlet is a woman attempting to get over her abuse and Daniel is the wolf whisperer. The imagination of the author is wonderful and exciting. The dynamics of the alphas and the bondage play were fan worthy (wink wink).

Scarlet and Daniel past are in a competition of who has a sadder story. While an author could turn this into a sob story filled with pity parties, Ms. Lorraine can use the history to enhance both characters. The reader understands Scarlet confusion and frustration as well as empathizing with Daniels fear of attachment. The tentative dance between Scarlet and Daniel are amusing at times. It is case studies in women are from Venus and men are from Mars.

Daniel is cast in a familiar misunderstood alpha male who’s lost his joie de vie. Scarlet is the damaged goods, terrified of males. Together, they may can help each other start a beginning. While this may sound rather sappy, the book was still a fun read. This is because Ms.Lorraine can inject humor as well as sexual tension throughout the story. This is a happily ever after story for a sunny afternoon. This is a feel good book which is just hot enough to encourage finding your significant other for some afternoon delight.

WOW! A wonderful read for cold, rainy days great story, great characters, and great plot. This book should come with a warning: keep a water bottle close by. I want to cuddle up with a werewolf. I will recommend this book to others. Looking forward to future stuff from this author.

A Sheriff and a hot wolf… damn what more can you ask for.

Scarlet is struggling she can't shape shift and she knows who she needs to go to for help. She did not realize that the help would be so tempting tho.

This book is exquisite. The rough Shape Shifter who really does not want to belong to any pack anymore and the shape shifter who after being damaged so badly feels the need to help and heal. To do the jobs those are bestowed upon her.

How can she get him to help her? He's hot an awesome body as you would expect any wolf and damn he is good in the sack. What a damn shame she has to use that to get him to help her, even if it does have side benefits.

The bonus is that he is her mate. Can he deal with his past and help her and then what. Read this book if you like the idea of a strong vibrant sexy virile wolf to take you, but be careful as you will need toys.

*A Taste of Scarlet* was an interesting and refreshing read. While it played into many BDSM themes, it was unique in that the storyline involved werewolves. The author captured the intensity and sexual connection between the main characters, Scarlet and Daniel in a way that appear very natural. The plot provided an in-depth storyline as well as thorough character development that easily hold the reader's attention. The sexual scenes were primal and intense to compliment the nature of werewolves which was arousing. The story was descriptive and to flow well. As standard with many plots, there were mis-communication between Scarlet and Daniel about their feelings for one another. At times these misunderstandings were worrisome to read; however, they did not take away from the enjoyment of the text. I give A Taste of Scarlet a Four Diva rating and a well deserved heat rating of Flame. I look forward to reading additional works from this author in the future.

Paranormals are always my favorite and when I am given the chance to read one, especially by an author I enjoy, my answer will always be yes. A Taste of Scarlet fit the bill perfectly for me. I found it to be a well-rounded story with the perfect blend of romance, passion and secrecy. A nice slow build up with a happy ending and of course a whole bunch of werewolves. This book was perfect way for me to spend a few hours.

Daniel and Scarlet are the perfect characters. That is despite their flaws, issues and a oopsie bonding. Scarlet has had some fairly bad things happen to her. Daniel, while being an Alpha also has had a less than perfect life. We do get hints of what Daniel and Scarlet went through to make them what they are I but it isn't confirmed until the end. I know some people may not like big reveals at the end of the book, but I for one do. When all the big issues are revealed at the beginning I feel all the cards have been played and there is nothing left to expect. Thankfully, that is not the case here. On top of a good plot line, there is some sex that is smoldering hot yet still tastefully written. There's a touch of BDSM but nothing too heavy to scare off anyone who doesn't enjoy reading it. Frankly, I found all the characters, including the secondaries, to be refreshing and especially liked how each one of them kept me on my toes. My personal favorite was Harrison. I definitely would like to read more about him.

I've read several books by author Evanne Lorraine and frankly she is quickly turning into an addiction for me. Between her characters and her stories I find she more than satisfies this reader's tastes in books. A Taste of Scarlet, read the Treeland Pack Tales, and I'm sure you'll love them as much as I do.

I was provided a copy of the book by JeepDiva for purpose of honest review. I was not compensated for this review in any way and the opinions of this review are all mine.

(repost from urbansilver.net)

Scarlet is a strong character that knows what she wants and is willing to do everything in her power to fight for it, no matter the risk. This is especially amazing considering the past that has her werewolf connection damaged in the first place, but also because we're given a really good idea on just how compelled she is by her own nature to want to give in to whatever Daniel wants just because he's an Alpha. She is far from a shrinking puppy, and I really enjoyed that about her.

And Daniel, instead of being your stereotypical Alpha that takes whatever he wants as part of his due, is capable of being gentle and self-sacrificing. Who wouldn't want a lover like that?

Also, and this is really important: the sex is really effing hot. Not ever what you could call straight-up vanilla, but what kink there is is handled nicely. More fudge ripple than rocky road, if you get my drift.

Mmm... ice cream.

My biggest problem is that one of the secondary characters kept confusing me. Harrison never really seems right for either role that he's shoehorned into, and it kept distracting me. He's a mystery that never really gets solved to my satisfaction, and if there was more about him, I'd gobble it right on up. At the same time, I know that the plot itself relies on a certain time crunch, so there wasn't much time to explore a complicated character that wasn't part of the love-match. Still, a distraction for me that might not even be a blip for others. YMMV (your mileage may vary).

So. Werewolves: check. Strong female protag: check. Caring male protag: check. Smexy times: check, check, and check. Would recommend: Oh hell to the check yes!

When we first meet Scarlet she has already suffered a trauma that has yet to be explained. However, her scared and timid nature in the beginning leads us to believe it was something quite awful. I assure you that it is awful, but the way it is written the trauma is downplayed and we don’t find out why until the very end of the story.

Daniel enters the story early on and he seems kind and funny. He tries so hard to put Scarlet at ease that it’s hard not to find him endearing. We soon find out that he has his own issues that are holding him back.

It is quite clear from the start that Scarlet and Daniel have wonderful chemistry together. Their love scenes are erotic and hot. Daniel is a great alpha male with a penchant for bondage. This was a little different though because the bondage is almost inherent and tied directly to the alpha and submissive wolf relationship. In any case, the bondage adds spice to the story.

Scarlet and Daniel share chemistry, but unfortunately for them their communication is horrid. Poor communication with one another helps the plot line along and keeps everyone off balance. Add to the mix that Scarlet has damaged self-esteem that keeps her from seeing her own worth and how much Daniel values her and it almost spells disaster. Despite the trauma, issues, chemistry, and poor communication, Scarlet and Daniel share a bond that might just save them both.

In the midst of all the turmoil there is Harrison, the vampire. He is a wonderful character that offers some comical relief. Harrison leaves in his wake a lot of questions and he probably has a very interesting story.
Based on, A Taste of Scarlet, I would read other stories by Evanne Lorraine.

A Taste of Scarlet is a smoking hot story. The chemistry between Scarlet and Daniel is palpable and deep. The background story and supporting characters set up the main plot excellently. Dialogues were compelling and showed the pain, desire, fear, and love the characters feel. One scene showing the fast moving emotions of a teenager brought an excellent dimension to the story. There are more than enough characters for sequels, and Ms Lorraine should get on that right away, her fans are waiting!

3.5 stars. It was a very nice story, Kept me wanting Sheriff Daniel, primo Wolf-Boy, but felt that it needed a little more umph, some controversy with Doyle or the Pack that raped. But one main thing that I truly love were there vows to one another, they were beautiful. And the description of her dress, love it. Kudos to Ms. Lorraine, Bravo.

What a good book. Good story with enough background that you don't feel lost. This was a different take on the wolves. I liked that the levels were explained and what that meant to the pack. Ohhhhh, and the sex torturously hot!

I hadn't read a good shape-shifter romance in a while, and how I lucky I feel to have found this one. Scarlet is the perfect heroine for me, both strong and fragile, beautiful, curvy, and smart. She is disconnected from her inner wolf due to a violent attack from rogue wolves when she was 14. Daniel is a "whisperer" who Scarlet seeks out to help her reconnect with her inner wolf. Of course he's got his issues, too, but that doesn't drag the story down.

The heat in this story was awesome, particularly when Scarlet first went into heat and needed his constant, steady and vigorous loving. He really came through for her! And for those looking for a hot BDSM story, this isn't it, but there is enough D/s especially in their lovemaking that it worked for me!

I also enjoyed the secondary character of the local vampire, who was funny for me the reader and a good friend to Scarlet.

Evanne Lorraine 's use of metaphor made this story such a delight to read. She tied emotions to living breathing things in nature in a way that just brought a special feel to the story. "The scent of his son's love -- equal parts sunshine, cool water and clean fur . . ." I love how she wove in this creative use of language throughout the whole book in what otherwise could have been just another romance.

What would have made this a 5 star book for me? The ending was too abrupt and didn't fit with Scarlet or Daniel's relationship or personalities. All of the sudden we've resolved all the conflicts, and boom we're at a formal tuxedo'd ceremony and in a limo -- this ending didn't fit the characters I'd come to enjoy. And then I felt a little ripped off -- Scarlet had been trying to reconcile her human and wolf beings for more than a decade. She's been dreaming of running through the woods and fulfilling her dream of really being a wolf, but then we never get to experience that with her. And for all of the references Daniel made about how different and erotic wolf mating was compared with human mating (which we got large doses of!), didn't we deserve to get a little taste of that rough loving after all we'd been through with the couple?

Despite those minor disappointments, I will be looking for more books by this author.

A novella that brings a damaged Omega werewolf--a woman healer--into the woods near her old pack, to spend some time at a family cabin she has inherited and to try and find the "wolf whisper"--a werewolf known for his ability to find the damage in other werewolves and help find resolutions. But the "whisperer" has "retired" or at least that is his story, but he becomes aware that the Omega wolf is his mate and even though he is worried that he will do her harm if he tries to remove her obstructions to shifting, he is drawn to her. It is a story of old hurts and very real fears that are "shutting" down two gifted shifters and not only robbing their pack of their abilities but also causing very real barriers that are preventing their own personal happiness. A very interesting read.
