Scurta istorie a umbrei

O veche legenda povestita de Pliniu cel Batran ne vorbeote despre o fata din Corint pe care dragostea ar fi ajutat-o sa inventeze pictura. In ajunul despartirii de iubitul ei, fata are nemaivazuta idee de a-i pastra imaginea trasand conturul umbrei celui gata de plecare pe un zid. Ia nastere astfel prima pictura, a carei incarcatura erotica si a carei valoare de substitut simbolic al fiintei iubite nu lasa nici o indoiala.

In mod paradoxal, acest minunat mit de origine a fost, de-a lungul istoriei artei occidentale, "uitat" sau poate in mod voit "ascuns". Cartea de fata isi propune sa reconstituie cauzele acestei ciudate amnezii si sa traseze istoria unui "rest". Lucrarea pleaca de la ideea conform careia a reconstitui "istoria umbrei" este o modalitate de a rescrie istoria ascunsa a reprezentarii occidentale.

This is a fascinating account that deals with the history of representation within Western art, but also with the philosophical and literary trends that underpin the concept and theory surrounding the shadow. Written in a highly readable and engaging style, the book's many illustrations and quotations make this a valuable read for scholars and interested parties alike.

İlk yüz sayfaya kadar kitabın dili ağır ve yorucuydu; uzun süre elimde süründü ve bir türlü içine giremedim. Ancak bir noktada kitap beni yakaladı ve sonrası adeta aktı. Stoichita, gölgenin mitolojiden Rönesans’a kadar uzanan yolculuğunu incelerken, onun yalnızca bir görsel unsur değil, aynı zamanda temsil, gerçeklik ve kimlik arasındaki ilişkide nasıl bir metafor haline geldiğini gösteriyor. Özellikle Batı sanatında gölgenin teknik ve kavramsal boyutlarını ele alışı, kendi çalışmalarım ve düşüncelerimle bir bağ kurmamı sağladı. Uno de los ensayos más interesantes que he leído. Aquí descubrí un mito muy hermoso que es el del origen de la pintura en la Hija de Butades que dibuja la sombra de su amado en una pared. Amo que este ensayo revele tantas ideas acerca de la sombra y cómo es un concepto tan fascinante que le otorga vida a todo. La sombra es vida. Que las cosas tengan sombra es que son reales. Libro ricco di spunti, riflessioni, argomentazioni, che aprono interessanti prospettive sul tema dell'ombra nell'arte e più in generale sul continuo interrogarsi dell'uomo su se stesso attraverso le proprie rappresentazioni figurative.

Immensely helpful for what I needed it for, however toward the latter part it felt like it was less about shadows per se and more adjacent issues in art history. Also, I had a digital copy and many of the picture examples critical to the points being made were not shown due to the publisher not having digital rights. So that hurt the experience a little. Still, worth a read.

I bought this book for like 6 years ago, and I haven't read it until today!, although the title never failed to provoke my curiousity, I kinda like strange topics and I regard this book as "rare and exotic". Dunno which one is better reading it or keeping it as "shadow" on my shelves, but as for now I'm liking the fact of having it, yeah!
