He must navigate the complex political landscape of the region, forge alliances with other leaders, and outmaneuver his enemies. Along the way, he meets a beautiful and mysterious woman named Sibylla who captures his heart and becomes his trusted advisor. But as Bohemond gets closer to achieving his ultimate goal of capturing Jerusalem, he begins to question his own motives and the righteousness of his cause. He must confront his own demons and decide whether he is truly fighting for the glory of God or for his own personal gain. ""Wine of Satan"" is a gripping and thrilling tale of war, love, and betrayal set against the backdrop of one of the most tumultuous periods in history. Gay's masterful storytelling brings to life the characters and events of the First Crusade, and sheds light on the complex motivations and conflicts that drove this pivotal moment in world history. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. jumping ship on this about a quarter the way through. pretty terribly written, but slightly amusing in that it reads like an exaggerated femme fatale voice from a 40s noir complete with dated idioms that really clash with the historical fiction setting. reviews of this online says the ending is disappointing so i dont really think im missing much by not seeing this one through to the end
I did not particularly like this book since I am not a fan of romance or war dramas. I also did not enjoy nor was I invested with any of the characters. All of them seemed like horrible people, especially since I could not understand most of their actions.
I especially hated how Bohemond was written, who ruins his two friendships for the sake of an affair. He really mistreats Zoe, not that she is particularly innocent but she did deserve a better fate than to be the Prince's play thing, and never feels particularly responsible for the misery he caused. I am disappointed that he received a happy end, especially since he first caused this mess.
However, what the book did do well was demonstrate the consequences of affairs and the hardships and difficulties of women during the crusades.

Laverne Gay writes superbly, her images are captivating; she builds her characters (Bohemond, Zoe and Mahira)extremely well. I look forward to more of her books.
A romance novel from the 1940s that happens to be about the era of the First Crusade. More concerned with a love triangle than anything else. Amusing at times, colorful and full of characters, but not to be taken seriously. Also uses some terms and descriptions that would trigger a lot of people today haha. At times it was like reading an old Hollywood gossip rag.
