Lew Grade was Britain's greatest show business mogul, a mogul in the tradition of Louis B. Mayer, Darryl F. Zanuck and Sam Goldwyn: he was the last of a kind. Grade seemed unassailable for a quarter of a century, first as an agent then as a television executive. He was also a preeminent salesman who had a tremendous rapport with the press and revelled in the most uncritical coverage any top British businessman has ever enjoyed. He seduced them with one-liners: in turn, fed the public tales of his relentless workaholism, unswerving patriotism, sales figures and long cigars.
