The U.S. in 2021 is not a pleasant place—after the death of President Carlton in 2016, civilization has broken down. Several states have ceded, and the people fear for their lives. There are gun battles on the city streets and barely enough food to go around. Jamie and Anna are with a group of children at a scientific facility on the outskirts of Washington, D.C.—a compound guarded by the army, with rioters clamoring to get inside this safe-haven. But Jamie and Anna don't care about that—they're here because someone at the facility is developing time travel, and that shouldn't happen for centuries yet. With rioters breaking in from outside, and a terrifying monster on the loose inside, our heroes meet the businessman who's funding the Darkling Midnight. Can Jamie and Anna stop the monster, escape the rioters, and discover what Midnight's up to? How is it all tied up with the death of the President? And why are the children here—unless they are part of the time experiments themselves?

About the author

Justin Richards was a British writer of science fiction, fantasy, and adventure fiction. He wrote science fiction and fantasy novels, including series set in Victorian and early 20th-century London, as well as contemporary adventure stories. He was best known for writing numerous spin-off novels, reference books, and audio plays based on the long-running BBC science fiction television series Doctor Who. Richards served as Creative Consultant for the BBC Books range of Doctor Who novels until 2017.

Chán về quá khứ nên chúng nó, Jamie và Anna, lại bay đến tương lai để xử lý một vụ bắt cóc trẻ em vì mục đích mờ ám của một nhóm khoa học. Thế nhưng đọc cái truyện này nó vẫn mang lại cho mình cái kiểu khó chịu nhẹ, giống như một idea cực tốt nhưng execution lại dở ẹ và ngang phè, như kiểu ăn một món ăn hình thức bày biện bao bắt mắt nhưng ăn vô cứ lợn cợn như ăn tôm mà vỏ tôm chưa bóc, cơm dẻo nhưng vẫn sót sạn. Nuốt không trôi nhanh được ấy, vừa ăn cứ vừa dè chừng. Kiểu vừa đọc vừa tìm xem có chỗ nào có tiềm năng làm turning point tạo gây cấn, cuối cùng chả thấy.

This is a book that hasn't aged well, being set in The Future of May 2021, and while part of me feels like the dystopian apocalypse is that close, I mostly hope it isn't.
