Ok first of all I will admit I am a little confused - easily done I know. However the reason for the confusion is Goodreads, I have typed in the ISBN numbers and it game me a totally different title in the series, then when I looked back at the comments I typed up previously for the first book the Paranormal Puppet Show - it appears to have moved them to a different title as well in the series - hmmm. Well I know I have read books 1 & 2 in the series.
Anyway this book, I will admit that I am easily distracted with books - especially the number that surround me, so I picked this title up for a quick read and sort of well had to read it all.
The book is a continuation to the Invisible Detective series which considering its target age group is very intriguing - yes there is the detection story going through it you would expect yes there is the adventure which the unlikely band have together- but there is also several other stories going on - at different levels of complexity and subtlety which for me suggest a maturity and respect the author has. I dont know if I am reading too much in to it - it was fun and it was quick and I guess for a Sunday morning just about right.
The reason I decided to read this book was because as a 2020 goal I want to read all of my backlist books, especially the ones that were from my childhood that I never got the chance to get to. I picked this one up because the plot seemed intriguing and I enjoyed the first one so I decided to continue with the series.
In this book we follow Arthur Drake in modern time London and in London 1936 as he and the “invisible detective” try to solve the mystery of a new animal that has been killing in the sewers.
I am truly happy to say I really enjoyed this book, it is not a new favorite or anything but for being a book that has been on my shelf for many years I was pleasantly surprised. I was engaged in the story, it read very quickly, it was fast paced and interesting enough to keep me invested.
Of course you can tell this book is for a younger audience so even though I truly enjoyed it I couldn’t give it a higher rating because I am not the target audience for the book (which is totally my fault). The writing is not the best but I was told that it gets better as the series progresses so I’m excited to keep going with the series. I need to be honest and say I really did not care much about the modern day timeline, it was sometimes confusing and I was 100% more invested in the 1930´s timeline when the actual mystery was being solved.
The plot twist did shock me, especially because the clues were laid all along and I wasn’t able to pick them up. However, for a younger audience the plot twist would have been major. My only thought is that I wish I had read this when I was younger, 2011 me would have adored this book.
