The Sinclairs of Scotland are known throughout society as the Seven Deadly Sins. Cast out by their father and denied their inheritance unless they mend their wild ways, they travel to London to seek respectability. No member of the clan is more scandalous than Sterling Sinclair, the Marquess of Blackburn. The ladies of the ton are powerless to withstand his rakish charms . . . until Miss Isobel Carington comes along.

Ten thousand pounds if she marries Sinclair!

Isobel is horrified to learn that's the amount wagered at White's Club—and now all of London is eagerly betting on her future! She's already publicly spurned the marquess, a man she hardly knows, but she's sure he is up to something, as he launches a bold campaign of seduction anyway. But soon she is surprised to learn there is much more to this man than reckless adventure and bad behavior . . . and, against her will, she begins to relish the thrill of sinning with this stranger . . .

Do you think it would be comfortable to have sex on top of this? How about losing your virginity on top of it?

Frieze of the Parthenon or

What about inside of this?

Hackneys at Smiths Lawn

Seriously, this is the 2 places our hero and heroine get it on in this book. The coach I kind of get, but losing your virginity on top of the Dionysus sculpture of the Elgin Marbles while it was housed inside a dark, cold, and dirty coal shed???? REALLY???

This book was like crack. The decisions, thoughts, and actions of the characters didn't make much sense but I still couldn't put it down and I am definitely going to read more from this series. LOL! Honestly, there were times when I turned back a page thinking I had skipped a few or something because I didn't understand why the characters jumped to the decision they did. The 2 characters met for all of 2 minutes, then he sees her at a party, gets kind of fresh, gets slapped, then makes a bet that he will marry her by the end of the summer. Then within a week and 1 more meeting with one another they are goo goo for each other. What?

All that aside I still stayed up till 4 am reading it and would have stayed up all night and read the whole damn thing if I didn't have to get up that morning at 8 am! So take it for what it is, a complete diversion from reality with some kind of hot but oddly situated romance.

Get out the pliers because reading this book is about as much fun as pulling teeth! It is sooooooooooooooo unbelievably dull. The idea behind the new series sounds good but that's where it ends. 7 siblings each associated with one of the 7 deadly sins (greed, avarice, sloth, envy etc etc) each has to redeem him/herself to be welcomed back into the family fold.

Before the story even starts you get this huge spoiler that you could have figured out for yourself but I for one prefer when the author leaves you guessing. If spoilers bother you I suggest you start directly with the Prologue and look at nothing before that.

The novel is peppered with annoying filler interjections like “och” (which is about the only way the author was able to show that the Sinclairs were Scottish) and “la” (for the Brits). Very seldom would you get Scottish pronunciations or words like “isna” or “ken” not that you want to see that everywhere because it can get irritating as well but the language here just didn’t work and it didn’t seem all that regency historical to me.

As for the love story, well, the h/h were virtually never together so their “relationship” and “great love” for each other is not only hard to believe but things suddenly happen right out of left field leaving the reader asking “when did the game start??” ! –like the first sex scene. Why would she have sex with a guy she doesn’t really know who she thinks is a complete jerk (and not in a potentially good way either) and almost on a whim??!! Doesn’t make sense for the character or the period. There is the odd steam scene that's barely worth mentioning. The heroine has a feisty potential but then turns into this do-gooder-only-I-can-understand-him-and-thereby-forgive-the-poor-soul type of broad that gets your eyes rolling. There are also the I’ve-hardly-been-with-you-but-boy-do-I-love-you scenes –queue the eyes to the sky again. There’s nothing interesting about the hero either so put the two together and you have blah with the occasional head shaking while you say to yourself “why am I still reading this?”.

Some of the other siblings are cardboard characters that are just “too much” and you don’t really care to hear their story unlike you do with many other family series (like Julia Quinn’s Bridgertons for example).

The story is the kind you hope will get better but unfortunately I never thought it did. By the last 50 pages I was skimming it because it became not only boring but something I just wanted to be done with because it was getting on my nerves.

If you bought this book because of all the hype surrounding what sounded like a great new series I'd bury it way down in the TBR pile for when you have nothing to read. Skipping it entirely is actually what I’d recommend :-/

Reviewed for queuemyreview.com; book release Dec08

Author Kathryn Caskie has launched a new series starring the ‘Seven Deadly Sins’—seven children of the Scottish peerage who each embody one of the seven ‘deadlies’. “To Sin With a Stranger” is the first book of the series and stars the eldest brother as he succumbs to a quite unlikely woman while making his courtship the talk of London!

When the Duke of Sinclair cast out his seven children and sent them to London to redeem themselves or be cut off forever from his name and riches, the eldest son, Sterling, is horrified and feels the burden of care for his siblings. Sterling’s ‘sin’ is Greed, so he is quick to do whatever is necessary to finance the siblings new life…even prizefighting. His scandalous charm will be put to the test when he meets a most unlikely woman. And, of course, she will be the one to tempt his possessiveness more than any woman before her.

Isobel is a quiet gentlewoman of a political schemer. When her fiancé and brother were killed in the war, she became a champion of those left behind by similar deaths and tirelessly campaigns for money to finance a home for the widows and orphans of soldiers killed in the war. She is shocked and disgusted when she happens upon a prizefight and the careless gambling of such outrageous sums on something so frivolous—and involving a nobleman to boot! When he involves her in a notorious bet on White’s infamous ‘betting book’, she’s also outraged. But the more time they spend together, the more confused she becomes. He seems so much ‘more’ than the façade he offers society. What is his scheme? And why?

I’ve read and enjoyed Kathryn Caskie’s earlier novels. But this one just seemed a bit ‘too’…something…staged, unrealistic, almost farcical. I couldn’t seem to warm to any of the Sinclair siblings, maybe because the author’s description of their antics made their disownment reasonable! Sterling’s obsession with wealth and money was odd when contrasted with his efforts to contribute to Isobel’s cause. And I found the reactions of London society to the ‘bet’ just plain nonsense and opposite of everything I’ve ever read of what would be allowed.

Isobel too was a confusing character for me. She never really became more than a figure on paper. Her actions and reactions were all over the place and that confused me even more. Her father’s motives were ever unclear and even when explained, I found them unreasonable and unlikely. And again, the seven siblings seemed more caricature than character.

I was so disappointed in Kathryn Caskie’s latest since I began the book with high hopes after reading the back cover blurb. I gave myself an extra day to think about the book, but still have to say that it just didn’t work for me on any number of levels. Having said all that, I will still pick up the next book in the series, hoping that “To Sin With a Stranger” will be an anomaly.

This is the first book in her Seven Deadly Sins series that is something to look forward to. Kathryn has come up with a great idea about seven siblings from Scotland, known as the Seven Deadly Sins. The Sinclairs have been banished from their father as punishment for all their unruly behavior. They must make their way, on their own, without any help from him. They all have an allowance and must figure out a way to keep food on the table and a shelter over their heads. This first book is about the heir and eldest sibling, Sinclair, who is cursed with greed. Sinclair is a pretty alright fellow and feels he is responsible for everything that has befallen his younger brothers and sisters. He will try his best to make sure they are all taken care of, even if he has to start wagering and becoming a boxer and fighter to make ends meet.

Sinclair makes the acquaintance of Miss Isobel Carrington who is a do-gooder. She wants to help the poor unfortunate widows and children of soldiers who go off to war and don’t return. When Sinclair and Isobel meet, it is not under the best of circumstances. Soon Sinclair knows a way to make his fortune and that is to make a wager that he can get Isobel to marry him. Soon all of London is in on the bet and even Isobel will use this wager to help in her cause. Both Sinclair and Isobel join forces with each get what they want. Not only do they become friends, but as in most romances of this ilk, they become lovers.

To Sin With a Stranger is a bit of an unconventional story. The Sinclair siblings all care for one another other and are there to help each other out. I can’t wait to read the future novels of the Sinclair clan.

Ohhh I don't even know what words to use to describe this great book. The story is so quick that I read it in less than 6hrs. I hated to put it down. The characters are refreshing and charming and the situations they find themselves in, well I was laughing so hard at times I had tears rolling down my face. This is book one in the Seven Deadly Sins series. It deals with the Sinclair family and I can NOT wait for the next books. If they are anything like this one, well I'll be unavailable the day the books are released. Sterling, our hero, is a rake, but one that has a strong and powerful heart. I fell hard for him myself. He's the oldest child and therefore feels it's his place to care for his siblings. When their father kicks them out of Scotland and the Sinclair home and without the money they are accustomed to, Sterling has to figure out how to change their fortunes for the better. His plan? Make a bet at White's, without giving his name of course, that he'll marry Isobel Carrington. Things heat up when Isobel is thrown into Sterlings way at different times. But will the love they are feeling last? Or will things they set into place before their feelings grew put an end to any happiness they may have had?

This is a great historical romance, one that is sure to keep you quickly turning pages and eager for more. All I can say is that previous titles by Ms. Caskie have had me quick to look at her new releases, but with TO SIN WITH A STRANGER she's placed herself on my auto-buy list!

Eloisa James' blog recommended this author, but I can't say that I concur. No character development, telling rather than showing, contrived plot, and ignorance or simply disregard of Regency-era social norms.

Seven Deadly Sins seri sıralaması:
1. To Sin with a Stranger / Aşk Bahsi
2. The Most Wicked of Sins / Aşk Esiri
3. The Duke's Night of Sin / Aşk Gecesi

The first in what promises to be a seven-novel series about the brothers and sisters Sinclair, who've been kicked out of the ancestral manse by their father, the Duke, and sent to London to clean up their act--if this initial round is anything to go by, each one of them is going to fall in love and get married before we're through.

Caskie has fun with the basic conceit--all of London gets caught up in a wager over whether Sterling Sinclair will marry Isobel Carington, which doesn't seem too likely considering that they met when she tried to stop a boxing match by stepping in front of him. Of course, since we know where this is going, the entertainment derives from seeing just how elaborate the narrative roadblocks will get. Caskie also cleverly brings in the plight of Lord Elgin and the Parthenon marbles as a means of illustrating certain aspects of the couple's respective characters (and, for one scene, a convenient setting).

The core romance is strong enough to have held up on its own, so knowing that it's just the opening act in a much longer story is mildly annoying. The framework could also use a little tightening: the opening scene of the Sinclair brethren's eviction is suitably dramatic, but the closing scenes in which Sterling "earns" his father's respect puts an unsympathetic spin on the duke's insistence that each of his children has to "prove worthy of the Sinclair name." Instead of making him look like the stern-but-loving father all the narrative explanations want him to be, he basically looks like a conceited jerk... so much so that, apart from the money involved, it's not clear why these young men and women WOULDN'T be glad to have him out of their lives.

(That, and the story is really somewhat slighter than the fullness of the paperback would indicate; the typeface seems a bit larger than what I'm used to in the genre.)

XD

Entertaining... the first in a series always getting a bit too involved with everyone else because of the introducing of all the characters. But there was a good balance and it was good to see the dynamics of the family. I think this was a good first effort and want to try more!

I really enjoyed this story. In Scotland, Lord Sterling Sinclair's father was angry with his seven children. He wanted them to learn to behave in society and sent them to London to make their way in society. He gave them a small house but little money to live on. Lord Sterling was the eldest and wanted to help his siblings by raising money. He was good at boxing and took part in boxing matches. Miss Isobel Carington tried to stop one of his fights to draw attention to her charity. Sterling was impressed and decided to get to know Isobel. However, a bet was set up at White's about whether he would marry Isobel. The bet grew a lot of unwanted attention but also raised a lot of money. Isabel was not happy about the bet but enjoyed being with Sterling. Will Sterling win his fight? Will the bet bring in enough money to persuade his father that he is a responsible son? Will Isobel forgive her father for his actions? Will Sterling and Isobel finally be able to marry?
Read on and enjoy.

After seven wayward siblings finally push their father too far, they find themselves exiled to London, given the vague mission of redeeming themselves while on a limited budget. Sterling, the eldest, is determined to make money to reclaim their standard of living, and makes a startling bet: that he will wed Miss Isobel Carrington before the season's end.

This is the start to a series about the seven siblings known as the Seven Deadly Sins. It's an interesting, if a bit fluffy, read. There isn't a lot of depth of emotional characterization or real surprises, but it was a fun diversion to read. Isobel was a little annoying to me, portrayed as a clueless do-gooder without any common sense. I much preferred Sterling's pragmatism and personality.

Wish this series could be finished

With the passing of Kathryn Caskie, the brilliant idea of Seven Deadly Sins not being finished is unsettling. There are many sharp, funny ideas to go with this...a series of authors could run with this and honor Ms. Caskie by finishing this series. Hope this is not the end of it! I've been waiting for YEARS for the books to come out, saddened that Ms. Caskie was too ill to finish.

Mediocre romance novel. All the characters made me a little ashamed of them as they are all ridiculous. The romance between Isobel and Sterling was absurd. One minute she hates him and the next she is going off to a dark shed with him and getting naked. She was dramatic, whiny, and emotional and I couldn't stand her. There was no real struggle for the couple to get past. Just instantly being in love.

I was intrigued with the idea of a family of 7 siblings each infamous for having a particular vice resulting in the nickname the 7 Deadly sins. I read an excerpt of book 2 which led me to the series where I of course began with book 1 To Sin With a Stranger. I am hopeful that book 2 will have improved character development. I liked the Scottish element and that after living, breathing and drinking whiskey during years of mourning Sinclair Duke finally recognized his failure to raise responsible heirs and forced his children to succeed in London. I liked the relationship between the siblings with their back and forth dialogue but still loyal and loving.
The heroine was not so likeable as annoying. Isobel Carington is the only surviving child of a politician who leads the house of Commons. He has ignored his daughter after the death of his son and his wife's suicide. Not much was mentioned about either of these experiences which deeply affected Isobel. The author didn't explain much which might be why Isobel came off as angry, immature and at times downright shrewish. I know she was written as a commoner but she really didn't have nice manners- the first time we meet her she gets in between Sterling the eldest of the Sinclair siblings and his opponent in a boxing match nearly getting punched. Isobel spouts off about the nonsense of betting when war widows and children could use the money. A noble cause but the wrong place to convince others of it. She often behaves impetuously- slapping Sinclair twice on the face in another scene resulting in bets at Whites that they will/won/t marry. Sinclair likes her spirit and behaves with all the confidence of a huge good-looking Scot who knows he will get what he wants. But I can't figure out why he wanted her in the beginning except for her strong spirit.
The siblings all try to help the romance because their welfare is dependent on winning the bet. Another good reads reviewer showed the Elgin marbles which are the scene of Isobel and Sterlings's first encounter. Thankfully because the whole time during that love scene I kept trying to imagine the logistics of it. It is ridiculous.
I am going to continue because the book 2 excerpt was enticing and I recently finished another series that improved with book 2. Mea Culpa

Better than the average romance novel, but still probably not worth four stars. I think I expected more backstory for the series, and maybe it will be revealed bit by bit in all of the books, but in this one, it is rushed over and I am left sympathizing with Sterling and his responsibility to care for the others since he is oldest mostly because every other romance hero who is the eldest child has that same troubled sense of responsibility.

Still, I liked Sterling and appreciated how he never really fought his emotions or got scared at the thought of marriage. His mind seemed to go "oooh she's nice, okay I would be able to marry her, oh man I love her, I am so glad I'm going to marry her" That was really nice because so often the men whine about being "leg shackled" and question things and that gets very boring after a while. Isobel was an interesting character, she acted very stupid and impulsively sometimes, but actually enough times that I could consider her impulsivity a character trait rather than "she just did something dumb". I mean REALLY? We first meet her as she jumps between two fighters in a boxing match. Who the hell does that?

Onto the end of the book.

After reading the second, I decided I should probably read the first. After reading the second, which immediately captured my attention, I found it so difficult to get into this novel. It starts out with Siusan sewing up Sterling’s knuckles, which I had to actually skip over because I could not stomach reading about it.

After that the story progresses with Sterling actually fighting some Irish man to win money to help support his siblings. After Isobel interrupts the fight and is embarrassed by Sterling, he goes on to win the fight and donate some of his winnings to Isobel’s cause. Sterling then makes the bet at White’s and proceeds to woe Isobel.

Honestly, I grew bored with this novel. I actually found myself skipping over passages and conversations without meaning to. It was actually depressing after reading the The Most Wicked of Sins, which had me hooked. I loved reading about Ivy and Nick’s developing relationship and them falling in love. Sterling and Isobel’s story, however, was just flat. I don’t why, but I just found that I could not care less about them falling in love, or Sterling seducing Isobel.

I was greatly disappointed.

First in a new series by Ms. Caskie that features seven Scottish siblings, each being guilty of one of the Seven Deadly Sins. Sterling Sinclair, the hero of this book, represents greed. When the heroine, Isobel Carrington marches into the boxing hall and directly in between Sterling and his boxing opponent, it's interest at first sight. When they formally meet at a ball days later it's hate for Isobel and a deepening interest for Sterling. Sterling, in an effort to raise more money for he and his siblings (since their father cast them out of Scotland with naught but a small stipend and a rented house), places a bet that he will marry Ms. Isobel Carrington before the end of the Season. Much wooing and such goes on. It makes for an interesting read, but Ms. Caskie could've added more depth to her characters thereby making all of the characters more interesting and the stakes higher. I was saddened that the story ended on page 317, leaving over 30 pages for previews and adds. For shame.

Reccomended to fans of Ms. Caskie and readers looking for an easier read.
