Bülent Somay takes 'Utopia' as a theme (as well as a specific genre) occuring throughout history under a variety of literary forms and different contents. According to him, Utopia an not be limited to literature. Utopian fiction is not merely philosophical speculation, nor is it a actual history. It carries the intentions of the former in most cases, but it goes deeper than that: utopian fiction lies at the midpoint of a triangle whose corners are philosophy, politics and literature. Every utopia is a political proposition, philosophical speculation and literary creation at the same time. In utopian fiction it is not only the persons or the plot that fictive, it is a whole universe. The reality, as we know it, disappears to make room for an alternative possible universe which stands for the actual negation of the existing order of things.

1956'da İstanbul, Bakırköy'de doğdu. 1972'de girdiği Boğaziçi Üniversitesinden 1981 yılında, İngiliz Edebiyatı dalında lisansüstü derecesiyle ayrıldı. 1982-83 yıllarında Montréal McGill Üniversitesinde bilimkurgu alanında doktora çalışması yaptı, ancak doktora derecesini almadan İstanbul'a döndü. 1983'ten bu yana Akıntıya Karşı, Zemin, Birikim, Demokrat ve Defter dergilerinde deneme ve makaleleri yayımlandı. 1984-1995 yılları arasında Mozaik Müzik Topluluğunun bir üyesi olarak, 1995'ten sonra ise bağımsız olarak müzik çalışmalarını sürdürdü. Metis Yayınları'nda fantazi ve bilimkurgu dizilerinin editörlüğünü yaptı. 1986-1994 yılları arasında yazdığı siyasi makalelerini Geriye Kalan Devrimdir (Metis, 1997) adlı kitabında, sevdiği şarkıların sözlerinden hareketle yazdığı denemelerini Şarkı Okuma Kitabı'nda (Metis, 2000) topladı. Tarihin Bilinçdışı (2004), Bir Şeyler Eksik (2007) ve Çokbilmiş Özne (2008) Metis yayınlarından çıkan diğer kitaplarıdır. Ütopya, Distopya ve Bilimkurgu hakkındaki yazılarını derlediği The View from the Masthead: Journey through Dystopia towards an Open-Ended Utopia kitabı 2010'da İstanbul Bilgi Üniversitesi Yayınları tarafından yayımlandı. 2002'den beri Bilgi Üniversitesi Karşılaştırmalı Edebiyat Bölümü'nde öğretim görevlisi olarak çalışmaktadır. Bülent Somay aynı zamanda İstanbul Bilgi Üniversitesi Kültürel İncelemeler Yüksek Lisans Programı Direktörüdür. Devrimci Sosyalist İşçi Partisi mensubudur.
