Coming off of the very busy Learn to Count with Northwest Coast Native Art, I really appreciated the simplicity of one item per page in this book. A lot of the images are clearly displaying some personality, and the moods of the images vary throughout the book.
Edit (Christmas 2017): Apparently my brother reads this book to the nibling a lot, and while he doesn't like all of its word choices, M likes the book a lot. (I got a bunch of Native Northwest books for baby's first birthday, and M is now 18 months old.)
I absolutely love this book. I've seen a lot of alphabet books over the years, but this one I'm excited to look at with my students because the art is absolutely beautiful! When I first looked at the book, I did not know what a "kulus" was or how to pronounce that word. This book challenged me to do some much-needed research and I'm glad to have learned something new. I was also thinking that "unity" might be a tough concept to explain at first; however, there are lots of children's books that explain "peace" and words like that, so why not unity too? This book challenged me in the best way.
